    Supermarkets and Diabetes

You don't need 'special' foods! For years, there are ranges of 'diabetic' foods/sweets. Problem is ,eaten in quantity, the artificial sweetener gives you the runs. Basic fats and protein are fine - stick to ingredients when shopping. Anything where it's difficult to distinguish between the food...

    New member greeting and question

Hi, welcome. Same age as you. Diagnosed 3 years ago. Used to dread going to sleep. Would wake feeling I was suffocating. Lost 5 stone in weight on low carb/high fat diet. No more sleep apnoea. All the best with your appointment. Keep reading up on this forum. More help than the NHS.

Health Professionals? Nurses? what a joke

Thank you for posting - couldn't make it up could you! Gave me a laugh. Very naughty having your own meter! Told my diabetes nurse that I was drinking two glasses of red a night. She frantically typed something on her computer and then asked me how to spell 'recommended' as in - 'drinking more...

    Low Carb/Sugar Free Recommendations

Keeping on the low carb/high fat theme, Tesco do a Wensleydale cheese with ginger and mango. Quite sweet and I eat as a snack or lunch with apple and toasted almonds. Haven't found any similar cheese anywhere else.

Test strips and monitoring doc says no!

Once a day fasting? Test 2 hours after a meal. Don't need to test early morning or before meal. That will cut down the amount of strips you need to use. Yes, it would seem that we the NHS likes to give out the meds, probably targets and incentives there somewhere! I haven't even asked my...

Overweight child who eats good food and exercises loads but never gets slimmer - where do I start?

Certainly, don't tell your child she has an allergy or food intolerance unless you actually have her tested and find out she has. Better to be honest and explain about food content and nutrition and why it may be a good idea to try - goes a long way to educating and helping her manage her weight...

    problems with metformin!!

Kimbo, no sugar on those Weetabix. Used to make crispy crust. How could you? Love buuter. If you think of the manufacturing process for marg, don't think it should be called food. In my opinion and ONLY my opinion, you do not have to start on the Metformin. You start by looking at your food...

    In Need Of Advice Please.

Jack412 - it's NOT sudden - been creeping up over a year plus weight gain? If weight were stable and no other changes and difference in blood sugars only in last couple of weeks, perhaps an infection but seems not. Your HBAC1 will give you an average over the last three months or so. Get it...

    In Need Of Advice Please.

Good advice above. If you have put on weight, then you have your answer as to the change in blood sugar levels. Test 2hrs after meals and you will see what you has been hidden to you. Seriously think about reducing carb intake (sugar and starch) and cut food portion sizes now. Very pleased your...

    problems with metformin!!

Glad it didn't come over too fanatical - think the glass of red last night didn't help. lol. Weetabix. Know I can easily eat 3 or more of those with sugar but that is definitely the 'old days' now. Tinned tomatoes? Would think they have added sugar on top of the sugar in the tomatoes themselves...

    problems with metformin!!

Read my last post and seems a bit nutty/obsessed but LCHF has really worked for me. No withdrawals as I started radually and then went with low GI and then went onto no foods that are overtly carby - no pasta, potatoes etc. I wouldn't eat Weetabix at all now. Used to love toast and breab etc...

    problems with metformin!!

I told my DSN that I would not be taking the Met. I had to make changes. Weight loss and exercise has proved the point in my case, may not work for others but if you read enough posts about problems with control there is often a common theme. Seek advice (especially on this on this forum) but...

    problems with metformin!!

Thank you for the 'like', Kimbo. For some people there are other ways of dealing with diabetes at an early stage than taking the drugs. Love LCHF. I believe it was the treatment for diabetes pre-drug era. It's the way to go. Take control. All the best. x

    problems with metformin!!

Diagnosis was a shock for me so went on a diet. Was going to Germany that weekend so didn't need any side effects when would be spending hours in a car then at an exhibition. Lost weight - so wouldn't be prescribed it now anyway.

Bikini body? The truth about diets

Start worrying when it's difficult to tell where the packaging ends and 'food' starts. Processed rubbish!

    Confused and disillusioned

As you are finding, you have to read up and do what you think is best. The people I know who are not controlling their blood sugars are totally dependent on the advice of their DSN. Have to agree with previous post even if it means paying for own meter - use one, it does help. You can actually...

    Testing on the road

Yes, I do test and would definitely recommend it. However, it doesn't have to be done as a matter of urgency on the road. That is for curiosity not as necessity if you happen to be testing a new food. A type 2 on diet only (as OP is) is not at the point where it even becomes a hypo risk. Type 1...

Three questions from a newbie T2 that have been baffling me

Hi Lucy, Milk has lactose which is a type of sugar, however I am LCHF so I have double cream. I only test two hours after food - and try and keep below 7.8mmo/l recommended by the forum rather than the NHS 8.7mmo/l. Try not to snack. Better not when you start testing because you need a clear two...

    Testing on the road

Testing as a type 2, not on medication, out of curiosity? TBH I really don't think it's worth worrying about. T2 on insulin and type 2, yes - completely different matter.
