Testing on the road

I'm pretty sure most diabetics testing or injecting in public aren't making a song and dance over it.
Yes, people can have a "thing" about needles and blood, but they can turn their heads away. We can't, we have to learn to deal with diabetes 24/7 regardless of any "things" we may have had about needles and blood.
Exactly we shouldn't change the way we do things that are saving our lives just because someone maybe squirmish about needles etc! what if there is nowhere private to go? Do we just skip our injection? No!

I entirely agree with the issues regarding injecting, however I started the thread about testing - not a health-threatening issue, just curious about experiences over practicalities. The thread has evolved, as of course many do!

Do you not test Mushroom?
Yes, I do test and would definitely recommend it. However, it doesn't have to be done as a matter of urgency on the road. That is for curiosity not as necessity if you happen to be testing a new food. A type 2 on diet only (as OP is) is not at the point where it even becomes a hypo risk. Type 1 - different matter. As I said, testing 'on the road' is curiosity, not necessity.

Thanks for clarifying. I was confused by your statement, coupled with your strap line "Eating to my meter", but all is clear now.

We eat out quite often, and I'm still gauging the hidden carbs in alien food (food I haven't prepared). So I like to take a before and after for comparison.

If I remembered, I would test in the car, before going into the eatery, but I often forget. Too focused on stuffing my face! When this happens, I pop my handbag onto the table, or my lap, between me and the room, rummage for test kit, pull it out. Test, and put it away.

No one notices.

I've even had a waitress come over, take the order and disappear while I was doing it. Her eyes never even flicked towards my hands!

The trick is to act as if you are doing nothing more exciting than getting out your reading glasses, or checking the time on your phone. People eyes are only drawn to furtive, self conscious behaviour.

It is even better if you carry on talking naturally throughout. Since I rarely stop talking, this is very easy for me.

I would never test in a public bathroom. Or make an issue out of it. Or try and hide it.
