Fast food staff member praised for helping woman with diabetes

I'm glad there was someone there to help her but (1) why didn't she have any hypo treatments in the car (2) why did she keep driving while she was so low that she could barely speak and (3) ice cream is not suitable as a hypo treatment! I once had a (mild, 3.9) hypo in a shoe store. The owner...

    Free Money.

I would definitely give a correction in those circumstances, especially because 4-5 hours later the insulin will be completely done so you don't have to worry about stacking. In my case, insulin lasts about 2 hours in the body so I would certainly correct at the 3 hour mark, but if insulin is a...

    Always carry glucose.

All these stories are very scary. I'm glad I've never been in hospital while I've been diabetic, but I do have a friend who is a nurse. This is the conversation we had when I told him I was diabetic. At the time I was eating lollies since I was in the 4's and drifting down Him: Why are you...

    Are you disabled?

YES I am disabled. I cannot do any of the following things without my blood sugar plummeting: have a shower, brush my teeth, get dressed, walk 5 minutes to go between classrooms, clean my room, go shopping, hang out laundry. I totally agree with T1D being a full time job...it is much more than...

    Getting left behind...

When I was deciding whether I would like a pump or not, I was told that a pump is just a different way of getting insulin and that I could get equally good results on MDI and pump. I did improve my control slightly after getting the pump - previous HbA1c's in the range 5.2-5.5, new HbA1c's in...

Type 1 Hypos at work - what to do?

No matter what, hypos always come first. Treat the low blood sugar before you do anything else! You can't possibly help anyone or get work done if you're unconscious on the floor, so you should always make taking care of your diabetes a priority over everything else. Also, don't remove yourself...

Rather not eat than take insulin

Ok first of all you should consult your doctor about this since they know your medical history best and so they can give you the most relevant and safest advice. If you wanted to start eating more carby food, then start small. Just eat 10-15g at a time, bolus appropriately according to your...

    Christmas time and type1

Ooh I love mineral water! Brb, booking a flight to Los Angeles.

    Christmas time and type1

I've found it's harder and harder to control my T1, the longer I've had it. However, Christmas food generally has not caused any problems as long as I know how much I'm eating. Last year I ate plenty of chocolate on top of my usual breakfast, and stayed around the 5's all morning. Just don't eat...

T1 - What does work stress (presentations/training/public speaking) do to your BS?

What a horrible day, feel better soon. Stress always puts me way up, public speaking puts me down due to the exercise of standing/walking/moving arms. I agree with the previous poster that the libre can be inaccurate, so always double check if you are much higher or lower than usual. Also, once...

Researchers to explore whether positivity can improve diabetes and depression

They want me to be more upbeat? About the fact that each night I go to bed afraid I won't wake up the next day? About the fact that I can't do something simple like getting dressed without my blood sugars dropping dangerously low? I will be resilient, hardworking, compliant, motivated...

Luckily Mars bars always did make me feel sick so I never ate them....heres another reason

I used to love mars bars, although I hardly ever ate them before I was diabetic so it's no big loss. :)

    treats..

Since I am T1 I can get away with ice cream, chocolate, chips, most things really...I would say ice cream is a pretty good treat if you can find say a pack of ice creams on sticks. Go for the small ones, I usually eat around 15g carbs of ice cream at a time, but if you can find lower carb ice...

what is "normal " Hba1c in non diabetic populations

I think I heard somewhere that this value changes depending on the person - young healthy people were supposed to **** out sugar around 9 or so, whereas older people were a little higher, and those with kidney problems may not until their blood sugar got to 14 or so. If anyone knows a source...

    It’s no surprise!

I would love it if doctors had the opportunity to learn more about type 1 and CGMs. Not just the facts, but lots and lots of examples of people's daily lives. I wish there could be a book where type 1's send in a summary of their day and the decisions they made (food, insulin, exercise, highs...

    High sugars

There are both urine and blood ketone testing strips available. If you think you are in DKA but don't have access to strips, then you should ask someone to take you to hospital. I think you are most likely ok since you have returned to 10, and remember that sometimes symptoms can persist even...

    Dawn phenomenon

Do you use MDI or a pump? If you pump, then adjust your basal overnight. If MDI, consider splitting your dose into morning and night doses so you have a higher basal during the night, or changing to Levemir which is taken twice a day and so allows more basal fine tuning (obviously consult your...

    Keeping your toes warm

I am pretty much constantly cold! Socks, shoes, blankets over your feet/legs if you are sitting or lying down, heaters, and hot packs (not constantly! Just for say an hour at a time). Keep your legs warm with long socks, or thick socks, and with a nice warm pair of long trousers.

Has anyone had there canula come out when it is hot as the sticky bit had come away with sweating?

Never had this happen to me, although I don't sweat a lot apart from blood sugar related stuff. I put my site on my bum and that seems to be a pretty secure place. Have you tried different locations on your body?

    Hyper?? What?

Everyone has their own individual blood sugar targets. You should discuss this with your doctor to help decide on an acceptable range of blood glucose levels. As a guide, nondiabetic people rarely go above 7.8, although people with diabetes, especially those on insulin, may need to relax this...
