High sugars

I was awoken with sugars of 19 at midnight last night after trying to correct this my sugar wouldn’t budge and so I got a new insulin pen out and finally it came down. I woke up with sugars of 10, however I have a dry mouth etc. I know I over react massively with symptoms but just want some kind of information on dka and ketone symptoms as I don’t currently have any test strips until the end of the week.
I think I feel fine but I suffer terribly from anxiety and panic attacks therefore I sometimes am unsure if I feel ill or if it’s my anxiety mimicking the symptoms

Hi, I find that anxiety raises my blood sugars - all that adrenaline causes a liver dump so that I can either run away from the threat or fight it - so try to relax more about it all. Maybe make a doc appointment too to get some new test strips that will help you to know where you are with ketones.
It's good your bs has come down, and that the different pen has worked. I find that sometimes the needle needs to be changed, even if I've just put in a new one, for effective delivery. I also find, personally, that if I go low when asleep my liver can over-react when it compensates with glycogen release and can raise my sugars to silly numbers.
Do you get DKA easily? Are you feeling sick and breathless? 19's only just into clinical hyperglycaemia so now that it's down to 10 you may well be fine - good luck getting down a little bit more and not getting into the see-saw trap - but a doc appointment is what I'd personally go for to get some more strips. There's nothing like a bit of good reliable information about a physical state to make the imagination shut up and get the 'ok, now I can do this about it to make it better' actions in place.

@Diabellie8494, sorry to read you had such a horrible night. I hope you are feeling better now.
It is very common when our BG gets high that we become insulin resistant and need more insulin than usual to bring us back down to normality.
As usual, everyone is different but I find I need 1.5 x my normal amount when my BG is between 13 and 18 and twice as much when it is higher. However, I am always very nervous taking this much ... but as @Fairygodmother mentioned, anxiety pushes BG up.

No I don’t often get it, in fact not since diagnosis (4 years ago) however I just find myself overthinking about it especially if I don’t have any ketone strips. I have some available to pick up after 4pm today so hopefully that will settle me. I don’t feel sick or out of breath just got a dry mouth.
 
I expect that your body’s efforts to pee out the excess sugars has made you thirsty. Hope that’s it, and if you feel ok except for that then I also hope that lovely drinks of water will deal with your dry mouth.
 
For some strange reason I think that not having any chemstrips for the rest of the week is a bad idea. Can't you guys just go buy some at a store if you happen to run out and for whatever reason your "surgery" can't get you any at that time? Here you can buy them at Walmart for 19 cents apiece. If it were me I'd skip the ketone testing entirely. I realize people there do it, but not here at all that I'm aware of. Just seems like one more thing to worry about. It's not gonna change anything you do either.
 
There are both urine and blood ketone testing strips available. If you think you are in DKA but don't have access to strips, then you should ask someone to take you to hospital. I think you are most likely ok since you have returned to 10, and remember that sometimes symptoms can persist even after your blood sugar decreases, and that at 10 you will probably be feeling some (milder) hyper symptoms as part of your normal hyper awareness. Keep on giving insulin as appropriate, and drinking plenty of water, and testing to make sure you come down safely. I also get incorrect high/low symptoms as a result of anxiety, so I know how much that sucks, but when that sort of thing happens you just have to ignore your body for a bit and trust your meter.
