Constant Glucose Monitor - Possible Breakthrough

I agree that the cost issue is the key; but the article implies that it tests once every 15 minutes rather than all the time (like a CGM) so perhaps that of itself will bring the costs down? The device itself is called "The Libre" - so I'll have a google about it. Best Dillinger

    Half units

Rosie, Don't get one on eBay and with all respect to the person who offered you one don't get one second hand from here. Your GP and nurse are wrong as is the clinic nurse - that link that Cherry-Pie posted shows that. I think you need to go back to your GP but if he has said it has to come...

    Portion control.

I don't think it is about greed @mo1905 - if it were why would there be so many unhappy fat people? Who after all wants to be fat? Here is quite a good discussion about Leptin (the hormone that tells us we are full) and in particular how fructose inhibits that hormone...

Constant Glucose Monitor - Possible Breakthrough

Hi, Has anyone seen this? http://www.express.co.uk/news/health/465270/Jab-free-diabetes-test-could-be-a-life-saving-breakthrough I can't understand why we don't have better ways of monitoring blood sugar when the technology is out there. Could be the breakthrough we've been waiting for, or...

    Portion control.

That sounds nice; but it is obviously not true - one can look to one's own experience of eating and hunger and conclude that plate size is pretty irrelevant. There might be subtle influences on the satiated but if you are hungry then whether your plate is the size of the table or of a coffee...

    Quick! Eat Fat!

You know how when we talk about low carb and high fat there often comes a post that says 'the problem with all of this is that there are no studies on the safety or efficacy of a low carb diet'? I completely agree, apart from these ones...

    Starting to break a little.

Oh Rosie, I know we haven't spoken on this site; but I'm so sorry this is all coming down on your head. There is nothing harder to deal with than mental illness in a family. I wish I could do or say something to help you but I know these words, well intentioned as they are, are pretty pitiful...

    Type 1's on a low-carb diet - HbA1c Poll Question

I don't know Noblehead; I think between you me and the NHS we are both low-carbers so I'd be happy if you contributed to the poll, but it's down to you. I don't think it needs to be a rigid thing; if you think of yourself as someone who limits their carbs (certainly in terms of the 240 a day...

    Type 1's on a low-carb diet - HbA1c Poll Question

It's low carb as far as this poll is concerned! I say I low-carb and am on about 30 grams a day. I don't really know why people get so into definitions here; it's not a competition. I'm sure that's not what you meant, but if you want to say you are VLC or ELC then that's fine as is LC or...

    Type 1's on a low-carb diet - HbA1c Poll Question

Good question; the recommended daily amount is about 240 grams isn't it? So, if you think of yourself as a low carber and are less than that then please vote. But if a figure is really needed I'd say 150 grams or less a day. Paul - 1.5 counts! I should have made that clear. Best Dillinger

    Type 1's on a low-carb diet - HbA1c Poll Question

I thought as a follow up it would be interesting to see what affect a low-carb diet has had on those Type 1's in terms of HbA1c. So; the question follows - please don't vote if this does not specifically apply to you. I'm particularly interested in low-carbing Type 1's who have got an HbA1c...

    Diabetes diet question

This is pretty conclusive I think but the split of percentages makes it slightly harder to see what is being said. At the moment 85% of Type 1s think it has helped and 96% of Type 2s think it has. Best Dillinger

    Porridge surge

I don't know why porridge is ever suggested for diabetics; it is pure carbs. Whatever its GI it's going to turn to glucose over time. I found when I ate it it had a very quick and very high spike; at +1 hours I would be in the teens and +2 back to single figures. That is not a desirable...

    Diabetes advice question ...

I liked this, but I don't like it of course; I hate it - it comes from the same lowest common denominator school of patronisation that says 'because things are complicated it's best we don't tell you'. Like Type 2's being told not to test because it will only 'worry' them. Which is true of...

    Diabetes advice question ...

It's terrifying that Type 1's on MDI regimes aren't given any specific instructions on carbs and control. If you don't have that you don't have anything. Stage 2 is then; drop the carbs, of course! Almost as bad as not letting Type 2's test their blood sugar; as if you are meant to divine...

    Quick! Eat Fat!

Well, to an extent; facts aren't opinions though; something is either true or not true irrespective of what we think about it. And you do need fat; there are many health problems related to having too low a consumption of fat (unlike carbohydrates where there are no deficiency diseases)...
