back from seeing the diabetes nurse

Hi Wiserkurtious, I hope you're settling into things and that you are not getting overwhelmed by the changes to your routine! I just thought I would clarify a couple of things regarding diabetes types, in case you have not been given the full picture. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition...

    Injecting for protein and fats?

This is perfectly normal. Fat has a tiny effect on blood sugars, and you probably won't need to inject insulin to cover it. Protein is a different story, especially in the absence of carbohydrate. The body can convert protein into glucose through a process called gluconeogenesis. It does this...

    Bad Hypo

Hi Kirstie, it's a good idea to wait for a few minutes, as it does take time to recover. The bad news is, often someone having a hypo won't agree with this. In the past, I have been extremely frustrated when my wife made me sit down on a bench for 10 minutes after eating glucose tablets. I...

Is Zero Coke ok for Diabetics?

I can't speak for the general health dangers that may or may not exist with carbonated drinks. What I can speak for is the effect on blood sugars. Coke Zero and Diet coke are the same drink. Neither of them should raise your blood sugars. In the same way, Diet Pepsi and Pepsi max are the same...

    Limerick

A man wrote his name as Bill Blypo, but in fact he had made quite a typo. It wasn't his norm, to jot down on a form, big mistakes, so he must have been hypo!

    2 years today

Hardcore, keep up the good work! At this rate in a decade or two you'll be fit and healthy, planning a big diagnosis anniversary milestone. Then they'll cure you and you'll have to start counting from 0 again :)

really really really worried about my husband!

Hi Vinyl, I would personally want to get that checked out as soon as possible. Blood sugars that high are unlikely to be life threatening in the short term, but they are cause for concern. Type 1 diabetes is likely, but the only way to be completely sure is to seek medical advice. I'm not sure...

New and a bit worried about my eyes

Hi Tansolo, you are actually doing all the right things at the moment. Before diagnosis, your blood sugars will have been fluctuating wildly. This has a temporary effect on your eyesight. Once your control settles down, your sight should return to normal after a few weeks. The condition you are...

    Studying with diabetes

I studied music at Bath Spa university, and my type 1 diabetes was no barrier at all. Unless you were studying something that needed you to prove you were fit and healthy (e.g. advanced scuba diving in politically hostile countries) I would not think you would have a problem.

    LC yay or nay?!

No problem, happy to be of assistance :). I hope it works for you as well as it worked for me.

    LC yay or nay?!

At the very least it's well worth a try. I have been eating low carb since January 2014, and it has worked really well for my control. HOWEVER, there is a low carbohydrate 'initiation' that many people go through, and I was no exception. Carbohydrate is addictive. There's no two ways about...

    Is Tresiba any good?

I have been on Tresiba for a couple of months now, and it certainly seems to work for me. I was on Lantus before. Tresiba does seem to give a much flatter profile. The first couple of days on it, my blood sugars were very erratic, as it takes a few injections to adjust to the new insulin. After...

    Test

I test 8 to 10 times a day, using the sides of my fingers (it's best to avoid finger tips). I have been diabetic almost 25 years, and have never suffered problems from frequent testing. I also work as a pianist, so finger health is very important to me!

    neuropathy

Hi Barbra, sorry about the problems you are having. I'm not the best person to help as I'm a type 1 without neuropathy, but I wanted to bump your post in the hope that someone more knowledgable will be along. Have you tried posting a thread in the 'complicatjons' section of the forum too? It...

    Smallest Substitute for Glucose

I prefer to use hypo remedies that I don't enjoy. The problem with using something nice (e.g. Jelly babies) is that it feels like I am rewarding myself when I eat them. Therefore, it makes a hypo more likely. I used to think to myself 'I fancy some fruit pastilles. I'll just give myself too much...

Type 1 first time background retinopathy found

I got the same letter back in January 2013. I have covered my experiences about this in my blog on this forum. I have posted about my entire journey as a type 1 diabetic, so you may want to skip a few entries if you decide to read it. The good news is that things don't have to go downhill if you...

    seizures after hypo

Over my 25 years as a type 1 diabetic I have had a number of seizures due to hypos. One of the worst was when I was a teenager. There was a huge amount of flooding, and an ambulance would not have been able to get out to me. My parents thought that an air ambulance was going to be needed. Very...

Had an appointment with Diabetic Nurse Specialist and Dietician today......

Look on YouTube for videos by Dr Troy Stapleton. Everything is explained there about carbohydrate (and why we don't need it).

    Stevia

Stevia is a great ingredient, but finding 'proper' Stevia is a challenge. I buy Nature's Garden Stevia from Holland and Barrett. It has a small amount or inulin (not insulin, inulin is something else) but it is predominantly Stevia. You often find that Stevia has been mixed with xylitol or...

New Type 1 - loads of questions

Hi Goldmum, welcome to the forum and to the diabetes club! It sounds like you are off to a great start! Unfortunately I can't give too much information about being newly diagnosed, as I was diagnosed at the age of three, 25 years ago. However, could I suggest that you search YouTube for videos...
