    new to blood sugar testing

The human body wants to run at 4.8. If your body still produces insulin, it will try to get to that level. your breakfast was low in carbohydrate, so your body was able to lower your slightly elevated blood sugars despite the meal. To all intensive purposes it looks like you are managing well...

Clarification on what is Save levels vs. Desired levels vs. Realistic levels

Also, I know you say you don't trust text books but I really would check this one out. The author, Jenny Ruhl, is a diabetic herself and has been since 1998. And if you want a really, really in depth guide to diabetic control, look out Dr Richard Bernstein's complete diabetic solution. Dr...

Clarification on what is Save levels vs. Desired levels vs. Realistic levels

Jenny Ruhl covers this very well in her book 'Diabetes 101'. I would advise reading it, but what she essentially says is this (and its backed up by clinical data, which she cites); to have 'safe' blood sugars, one should aim for levels that are as close to normal as possible. For a non diabetic...

How highly would you recommend eating low carb?

You can find a recipe for low carb bread at http://www.lowcarbdiabetic.co.uk/Recipes.htm I have actually modified the recipe, I use 140g ground flax and 140g ground almonds. This does put the carbohydrate content marginally higher, but I find that too much flax doesn't agree with me. I find I...

    Type 1 tomorrow's food

It depends who you ask. If someone is trying to be a Dr bernstein low carb purist, they will avoid them. I tend not to actively choose them. However, if I buy a salad and it has a cherry tomato and a couple of slices of cucumber, I won't worry too much about eating them.

Type 1: What are your HbA1c test results?

5% is brilliant. Diabetes care on the NHS is generally not fit for purpose. Same goes for advice given in USA and Australia. Want to know the reasons behind this? Read Diabetes 101 by Jenny Ruhl. Although a lot of it is for type 2s, there is a huge amount of information for us Type 1s as well...

    Festivals?

I went to Sziget festival in Budapest back in 2007. I had a great time, and was there for almost two weeks. I also participated in the Duke of Edinburgh's award back in 2004. My last expedition was trekking 80km in the French Pyrenees, followed by a water sports holiday. The thing with Sziget...

How highly would you recommend eating low carb?

There is always a huge amount of debate regarding this on the forums. I eat low carb myself, and it really helps me. However, I am not anyone else. Anyone with diabetes has to decide what information they choose to believe. What I would suggest though, is to properly investigate the claims. If...

    Blistery rash on legs

Do you see a diabetic specialist? If so, I would ask to have an appointment with them. It will help set your mind at ease, or if there is a problem, it will be diagnosed and you will get the help you need. It could be to do with diabetic neuropathy, or it could be something more benign. My...

    Confused - hypo

There are huge numbers of reasons this could have happened, and you may never know for sure. My advice is to keep a comprehensive diary of blood sugars, insulin, food and exercise so you can see if a pattern emerges. An unexpected hypo could be caused by: Changing your injection site. If you...

    new to blood sugar testing

If you want to understand the way diabetes works and the best times to test, check out Jenny Ruhl's book Diabetes 101. There's another brilliant book, Dr Bernstein's Complete Diabetes Solution, but it is hardcore reading. Ruhl's book is more accessible in my opinion, but both are packed to the...

    Depression?

Very pleased to help. Sometimes, the best thing to do is to share your problems with your partner. If your boyfriend is having a hard time, you may be able to offer him a solution. It's a wonderful feeling helping someone you care about. If both of you say what you're struggling with, you can...

    Depression?

Ok first off, you are not an idiot. The worst thing with anything is having to face it alone, or feeling like you do. The truth is, you have nothing to be ashamed of regarding what you are feeling. Nothing. Not a single part of what you are going through is cause for shame. It sounds like you...

    Best sugar substitute?

I use Stevia, which I get from Holland and Barrett when it's in stock. It does have inulin with it, but it's mostly Stevia. Be warned! It's very, very strong. You only need a tiny amount compared to sugar, and on its own it does have a very bitter aftertaste. However, I got used to it pretty...

Do you ever think how your life would have turned out if you didnt have type 1 diabetes

I probably would not have met my wife. In hindsight our meeting was extremely, extremely unlikely. We took different courses at university, and our lectures were at opposite ends of campus. If I was not diabetic, I would have taken different actions, at different times. I probably would have...

    Levemir

Thanks everyone, really helpful advice as always! I'll see what they say this time next week at the GP's. If they won't prescribe Tresiba I will give Levemir a go. I have my diabetic clinic at hospital at the end of March. I have to say my team are actually brilliant there. They were skeptical...

    Injecting in public?

I have never had a problem giving myself my insulin in public. That said, I only inject in my arm or stomach when not going to a loo to do so. Might be a bit awkward pulling my trousers down in a crowded place to access my leg :p

    Reversing diabetes

To be honest, I think it's probably a point of view. You will have lost some of your pancreatic beta cells that produce insulin, so in that sense you have diabetes. However, if you have normal blood sugars and are achieving that without the need for medication, I would say that your...

    Levemir

Cheers for the heads up. I've now got an appointment next Friday to review my diabetic control. I'll be bringing my diabetic diary with me, and will make a strong case for trying out the Tresiba. Usually, my surgery is very good at prescribing what I ask for. I think they realised early on that...

    Levemir

Thanks, that's a great post. I have read through the article you linked and it all looks promising! I never believe something on word alone though, so I guess the best thing for me to do is try it out and see how it goes. I'm due my annual checkup with my GP now anyway, and then have diabetic...
