    Grim Reaper part two

There was a sensible, and sensitive, discussion topic about the pros and cons of being open on the subject of diabetic complications. I'd have thought this was a key issue for debate on this forum. Their was no aggro, and it has disappeared. Did I miss something, or can someone tell me what...

    Metformin question

This is a known side effect of metformin. Can come on after a while. If it continues, ask your doctor for metforminSR (slow release) which doesn't normally have the same effect. The doctor doesn't give it to us unless we ask because its a tad more expensive.

    Low BG level

If you've modified your diet, sensible move, then the Gliclazide is sending you too low for the amount of carbs you're now eating. Good news in a way - it might mean you could control your BGs on diet and metformin alone. Metformin doesn't cause hypos. For now, if you stop the tea time Glic as...

    Diabetes care depressingly poor

But that's the point isn't it? Having left the N HS regime on advice from people here, you feel great, and are hitting targets. But those posters never forced you into low carb:- I'm one of those "high volume" posters, and here is what I say on my standard greeting note when people ask about...

    Diabetes care depressingly poor

I think you're being overly critical mongoose - and of course, statements like:- are completely out of date, if they were ever true Of course, there's a lot of talk on here about low carbing, because a lot of people do it, but that's different to "force feeding" people on it. I don't see any...

How long for my BG levels to stabilise?

Hi John boy! Dieticians and the NHS love to recommend porridge for some reason, but for most diabetics it's a no-no. You need to test in a planned way. Here's what I did:- In general terms you will need to reduce the total number of carbohydrates you eat per day. All carbohydrates turn to sugar...

Prescription of test strips and finger lancets

It isn't illegal, but neither is it compulsory for Gps to prescribe it unless you're on insulin or similar. Most don't on cost grounds, although they use spurious other excuses to cover up the cost issue.

    help

The bread is the worst thing in your diet. Need to leave that out. Nonetheless, it could be you need help with more medication to get things under control. Sometimes, you can then wean yourself off that extra medication with careful diet once your BGs are looking better. Do you exercise much?

    MILK and Diabetes

Depends how much you drink. Remember, that 4.5 % means 4.5 grams carbs per 100 ml. A half-pint glass of milk is 270 mls, which is approx 12 grams carbs. So for someone on a low carb diet, that's quite a lot in just one drink. Some in tea or coffee doesn't amount to much.

    Problems keeping my BG UP

Personally, your levels are so good, I'd ignore them! I often get readings in the threes with exercise. So what? Non diabetics get that all the time. If you are mainly D&E, just stick to what is working so well and blow them. If you were on drugs that could lead you to hypos, then fair enough...

    Testing blood on left/right hand

Any test done by our meters are only guaranteed to be within 15%. That means a real reading of 6 could go from 5.1 to 6.9. That's extreme, but shows the range of possibility. Like xyzzy, I expect my real reading to be + or - 0.5ish. Each strip can vary a little, and handling the strips affects...

    type 2 diabetes

Fasting sugar levels are always the hardest to get down. The dawn phenomenon affects them. This is where the body prepares us for the day by promoting a release of adrenalin and glucose. Non diabetics simply take the glucose straight to the muscles and liver, but we can't do it so efficiently...

    hello and eating out

Strong cheese isn't a problem.its your friend! It's the starchy carbs you need to avoid, not the fats and dairy. And feel free to swop amaretto with kahlua. Or any other alcohol. Kahlua is my wife's favourite by the way. I'm a red wine or single malt whisky man. Or beer. Or ........

    An Open Letter

Of course, I'm sure Sid would also want moderators that post on the other equally vile blog, that attacks people on here, to step down? Otherwise it would just be hypocritical wouldn't it. Perhaps Sid could also show us ANY post Pneu has made on Eddie's blog, other than in defending himself...
