rise in BG after breakfast and symptoms

Be very wary of grapefruit if you are taking statins. I have a 2-egg omelette every morning for breakfast. Sets me up for the day, my BGs are stable, and I'm never hungry before lunchtime. Viv 8)

    Keto adaptation

There are two different conditions: ketosis, in which state the body runs on ketones and is, as you rightly say, a perfectly natural condition when the human body adapts to a low-carbohydrate diet; and ketoacidosis, which happens more to Type 1 diabetics, though I believe it can happen with...

    HF = High Fat

Me too, Lucy! :D  I've just eaten a 2-egg cheese omelette cooked in butter. Organic free range, organic farmhouse and organic farmhouse. 8) Viv 8)

What type of diabetes do you have, and do you work?

I'm Type 2 and mostly retired. But I still do some work occasionally. I don't have diabetic complications - just age! Viv 8)

    Yoghurt, any good to Diabetics?

Branded fruit-flavoured yoghurts are often quite high in carbs; make sure that you read the labels - you're looking for the number of grams of total carbohydrate in the pot. As the others have recommended, I buy plain Greek-style yoghurt, unsweetened, or if I can get it, organic sheep's or...

    operation and high sugar?

Once you get your HbA1c result, I would make an appointment with your GP and discuss things with him/her. Don't be put off with "the nurses handle diabetes patients"; you have the right to talk to your doctor - and I'd mention the dismissive nurse, too! Ask your GP what will happen in hospital...

What to eat with a tummy bug?

Chicken soup. Not too many carbs in a tin, and very soothing and comforting! If you have a half-glass of sugar-free lemonade topped up with hot water, you get a warm clean-tasting drink with no 'edge' to it. That's one of my favourites. Viv 8)

    I don't care WHAT happens...

I'll just tiptoe quietly in, and maybe no-one will notice that I'm last . . . :shh: Viv 8)

Type 2's: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning?

Re: Type 2's : What was your fasting blood glucose in a morn 4.7 at 08:30 today, which considering that I let myself off the leash a bit for the last few days (visiting relatives), is pretty good! Viv 8)

    constipation

Tesco sell flax seed, so I would have thought that the other big-name supermarkets might. Or you can get it on line. Healthfood shops sell it but that's no help if, like me, your nearest if 50 miles away! I was in a Holland & Barret a couple of days ago while visiting relatives, and they had...

    Dry Eyes?

I occasionally suffer from dry eyes - nothing to do with diabetes, but an infection of the small moisturising pores on the edge of the eyelid. It's called blepharitis. This can make your eyes feel hot and itchy, produce a lot of mucus and you wake up with that sticky yellowish goo around your...

High blood pressure tablets and lichen planus

I have oral lichen planus and with me it's completely stress-related. It developed when I was doing my last house move, which was unbelievably stressful, and is much better now than it was - I seldom get any bad signs of it. I believe it is an auto-immune response - worth reading around. It can...

    Waiting Lists for housing

Have a word with your GP. He can write to the council and the housing association to emphasise your need - that may just boost your points a little. Good luck! Viv 8)

    I don't care WHAT happens...

Indy, how come you have a picture of me as your avatar? (I wish!  ) I used to have that one stuck to my fridge door as a deterrent. It didn't work. :( Viv 8)

Pros and Cons of being diagnosed as Diabetic

Many of us go into denial when first diagnosed. Don't ignore it! Take this opportunity to review your lifestyle, diet and exercise. If you catch diabetes early (I'm talking about Type 2 here) you can get good control before it does you any damage. :D Viv 8)

Pros and Cons of being diagnosed as Diabetic

If you want to double-check your results, LouiseW, eat 150g or more of carbohydrates every day for the 3 days before your next blood tests. The problem with having a fasting blood test while eating low carb is that your readings will be okay. You need a few days of a "healthy", carb-based diet...

Vitamin D prevents clogged arteries in diabetics

Anyone know any stats about clogged arteries in populations living in tropical latitudes? If there is a greater problem with clogged arteries in populations in our latitudes than in the populations that naturally get more sunshine - ie, more Vit D . . .? Difficult to tease out, I should...

    Ketostix

You feel exactly as I did, when I first started Atkins for weight loss - having got to 20 stone by eating 1500 calories a day of a high carb, low fat diet - a "healthy" diet based on NHS recommendations! I wasn't diabetic then. I remember trying to eat the first piece of grilled pork chop with...

    More Vit. D News

Does anyone know anything about high cholesterol levels in populations in the tropics? The other thread about research showing low Vit D levels associated with arterial plaques made me wonder whether high cholesterol levels could be associated with latitude in any way. Viv 8)

    More Vit. D News

Yes. Expose your arms and legs for 10 minutes a day on sunny summer days (what?) and you'll get enough to build up a store. However, even if you ran about naked  on sunny winter days, at this latitude you wouldn't get enough to be of any use. Also, as we get older we get more...
