Vitamin D prevents clogged arteries in diabetics

Yay! I might just up my dose! :D  Viv 8)

    Diabetic nurse!

My practice nurse knows more about diabetes than the specialist GP. We do have a peripatetic diabetes specialist nurse but I don't particularly want to see him (yes, him!). As for the dietitian  - poor girl, it's not her fault! She has to preach the "starchy carb" line, and because she...

    Bread

Grace, insulin resistance definitely makes it much more difficult to lose weight, as does hypothyroidism - have you been tested for that? As far as very low carb goes - do you know just how many grams of carb you are eating? No "hidden" carbs creeping in? We are all very different in our carb...

    Bread

A lot depends on insulin response. In non-diabetics (I much prefer that term to "normal" - I'm a normal person who happens to have diabetes!) the First Insulin Response is triggered as soon as they start eating. I suppose they do sometimes go above 6.7 at first, if they are eating something very...

Resorting to buying test strips from Ebay

Do you drive, DannyH? if so you are required by the DVLA to test every time you get behind the wheel. Try that one. Viv 8)

Magnesium Tablets 375gm and leg cramp

I take 2 x 150mg of magnesium citrate every day. This is apparently the most easily absorbed form of the mineral. I was actually having a "rest" from this supplement when I last posted about leg cramps, wondering if the cramps were associated with Metformin. Since resuming the mag. cit. I have...

No such thing as a diabetic diet

I work on the theory that my system has a problem with metabolizing carbohydrates. If I eat too many carbs the insulin I produce has trouble dealing with all that glucose. My muscle cells are resistant to insulin, so my blood glucose rises and all the excess blood glucose gets shoved into my fat...

6monthly HBA1c unnecessary for well controlled diabetics.

Re: 6monthly HBA1c unnecessary for well controlled diabetics IMHO a lot depends on who is managing the diabetes. I am managing my Type 2, with the help of my surgery for tests and prescriptions. If they treated us all as individuals, they would ask us how often we wanted HbA1cs. I get mine...

    Ketostix

Any darkening of the colour of the Ketostik indicates that you are in ketosis. However, some people never show it - presumably they're using all the ketones and not excreting any! Experiment a bit with the time you test - I usually get my darkest colour mid-afternoon or evening. Viv 8)

    Bread

I'm Type 2. As a normal rule I don't like to go above 7, ever. I can eat a couple of slices of bread, with fats eg butter, mayo, to slow things down, very occasionally. But we are all different. I allow myself occasional "treats" (fish, small chips & mushy peas last Wednesday) and managed 6.2...

    Diabetes and alcohol

Alcohol is one of the biggest causes of inflammation in the body, and it seems to becoming accepted now that inflammation is behind a number of physical problems. "Nothing too much" was the inscription over the Temple of Apollo at Delphi in 1st millenium BC Greece. "Everything in moderation"...

YOU HAVE ONLY YOURSELVES TO BLAME

Thanks, Sid. Hope you're feeling okay now :D . Ursus262, I hope I'm not going to disillusion you, but as far as I know every multi-GP practice has one partner designated the DIabetes Specialist GP. Their effectiveness varies - I'm glad you have a good one :D . I don't get on with mine, so...

    I feel a chocolate moment coming ...

Everything I like is either illegal, immoral, or fattening . . . :D Sadly, I've now got to the age when it's mostly only the fattening stuff that I come across . . :( Viv 8)

    Aches and pains

Are you taking statins? they can cause muscle and joint aches. There is also a condition called "spinal stenosis" - lumbar or cervical. Lumbar, which I have, is caused by arthritic overgrowth of the bones of the facet joints in the lower spine, which can trap the nerves to the legs. When it...

YOU HAVE ONLY YOURSELVES TO BLAME

I am beginning to think in the same way as Unbeliever - I'm not sure I want to be around here any longer - and it saddens me greatly. Just a note to those of you who have been around a year or less - there are a number of back-stories to this forum which you cannot possibly be aware of, but...

    I feel a chocolate moment coming ...

"Medecinal" reason for dark chocolate - 85% or 90% proof. It is very beneficial for low-carb related constipation   . In my experience only, of course . . . I couldn't possibly recommend it to anyone else  Viv 8)
