    Type 2 2, I smell awful

Yeah I suffer from ‘phantom smells’ now and then if I have a bit of a sinus infection. Diesel is one of them, like a bus or taxi running in the room. The other I can’t describe, just no terms of reference.

Is T2 grounds for ill health retirement?

Is there anything you can do to make yourself feel better and more able to continue? For example, numbness in hands and fingers might not be diabetes-related, perhaps it could be carpal tunnel syndrome which is very fixable. I don’t know how you manage your diabetes? If your symptoms are due...

    Foods/supplements which promote bone knitting?

Comfrey was historically called ‘knitbone’, but whether it actually did any good or is safe, I have no idea. I think it was used a a poultice.

    Celebrating real foods

I was going to have some cheese and salami for dinner, I see now that it will be a cheese-crusted omelette. Looks amazing!

    Celebrating real foods

Well colour me impressed. My friend has been repeatedly making a spice cake from diet doctor for some months now, and keeps urging me to try it. It’s cooked in the Instant Pot - electric pressure cooker. I have just scoffed a large slice and the texture is really amazing - so moist and light...

    Tears of frustration

Oh dear, I can understand your frustration- with that advice, what would you eat? I would seriously recommend that you do some research of your own about mechanisms of raised cholesterol, and what indeed constitutes ‘raised’ in any case. Some doctors automatically put diabetics on statins...

    Really struggling with low carb

I don’t think you are a devil! And anyone who tries is a role model, in my opinion. I don’t think the people on here are the carb police, although I’m sure we sound like it sometimes! But it’s with the best of intentions, I think most posters here just want everyone to have the best...

    Low fat/low carb

You say that foods that are high fat, high protein and high carb give you problems, but are you sure? I mean, have you tried eliminating just one category at a time for a week or two and seeing if there is any improvement? It might be just the carbs, for example....

    Celebrating real foods

Last night was a pork steak bashed out thin with a rolling pin. I find it much easier and quicker to cook this way so it stays juicy and tender. With some buttered flat beans and courgette, then berries and cream....

    Celebrating real foods

I made a tasty turkey mince curry at the weekend. It was supposed to be chinese-dumpling style cabbage rolls but I forgot my plans and got some home-made tomato sauce out of the freezer, so curry it became. With aubergine and courgette, and some of the aforementioned cabbage instead of rice.

    Advice for diabetes

I would say, for any type of diabetic, take responsibility for yourself and accept that managing your condition is entirely down to you. The medical profession is at best uninterested, and at worst, positively dangerous with its antiquated advice.

    Help again again again

As others have said, fat doesn’t make you fat, nor does it give you heart disease. However, if you want to avoid full-fat dairy that is of course your choice. But I am wondering why you need a spread at all? Since I adopted LCHF I have nothing to spread butter on! I use if for melting onto...

    Celeriac (and carrot/swede)

If you have an air fryer, swede, courgette, aubergine and celeriac ‘fries’ roast up a treat with a bit of olive oil, salt, pepper and a dash of garlic granules, if that’s your jam. They don’t go crispy, but they catch around the edges and go meltingly soft. I’m sure they would work just as...

    Newly Diagnosed with Type 2

The monitor provides a snapshot of your current actual blood sugar in mmol/l, and the figure from the docs is HbA1c, which is a measure of your average blood sugar over roughly a 3 month period. This is based on the amount of glucose stuck to your red blood cells, which have a life span of...

    Glucose

The milk is a likely culprit too.

    Nerve Conduction Tests

Much the same, although I only really experienced mild tingling. Mind you my carpal tunnel nerve entrapment was quite severe, and on one hand he couldn’t get any conduction at all! Perhaps the response is more pronounced if the nerve is actually conductive? But really, not anything to stress...

    Whats the best cream

I use udder cream... no seriously, I do. On both hands and feet. The proper sort you get from agricultural or equestrian places. It often has cetrimide in it, which I always feel might be helpful if the skin is cracked. And it’s really moisturising, if slightly antiseptic smelling (but that...

    Stopping smoking

Aah as others have said, it’s more than just a cigarette. It’s an addictive drug, a familiar routine, an ingrained muscle memory and a whole load of emotional attachment all rolled into one. I have never smoked (hah one sensible thing I did, then!) but I can see how hard it is for others to...

Infected toes, getting frustrated at lack of progress

Probably akin to spitting in the ocean, given the severity of your infection, but I resolve my minor, occasional in-grown toe-nail infections by liberal swabbing with tea tree oil. Might be worth a try?

    Type 2 A Mystery

I understand the temptation to accept what the healthcare professionals say as gospel, but in my opinion any nurse or doctor who is content to allow your BG to tank along between 12 and 18 all the time is being negligent in their duty of care. For comparison, my preprandial BG at diagnosis was...
