    Newly diagnosed and need help

You will find you need to control the carbs as part of an ongoing lifestyle. The traditional Western diet isn't balanced for health which is why so many are obese. We no longer exercise or live in cold homes as we once did so carbs need to be kept down. As long as your BS remains OK and your BMI...

    Newly diagnosed and need help

Hi. A commonly recommended one is the CodeFree on Amazon as it has low cost test strips. All the meters meet the same standards of accuracy so go for the ones with the lowest cost strips. Note these are VAT free if you are a diabetic.

    Please educate me on fats!

Many posts so far! The big problem is simply the name 'fat'. The 'experts' assume when you eat 'fat' it creates body 'fat' which is doesn't other than by exception. Many medical experts know little about the body's metabolism and the fact that fat goes thru a complex metabolic process in the...

    Dismissive GP

Hi. It sounds like you aren't diabetic but do have some medical problems that need diagnosis. Having a low-carb diet is good for anyone and will help weight reduction. Do have enough fats and proteins.

    Newly diagnosed and need help

Hi. I'm not sure what Mosely has suggested in this book as he has a new idea each year and new book! Basically you need to keep the carbs down - simple. Have proteins and fats to keep you feeling full. If your nurse disagrees with this just smile politely and ignore it. Fortunately my excellent...

    Newbie to it all...advice needed

Hi. The fact that your nurse told you to have low-fat food and two Weetabix etc for breakfast shows she hasn't a clue about diet. Don't rely on your surgery for diet advice anyway. Also don't rely on brand-name diet companies. They want to make money, retain you as a customer and will almost...

Monitors and their info.. any tips?

HI. You are obviously taking this seriously and doing what you can. Do let us know what your typical diet is. Don't worry about the fat in your diet as the body doesn't use it as the main source of stored glucose. When you were on Metformin was it the Slow Release (SR) version?

    Fruit info

Hi. Avoid tropical fruits such as bananas, nectarines etc as they are so high in sugars despite being good in other ways. Stick to apples, pears and so on. GPs love Metformin as they can be seen to be doing something for diabetes by prescribing. It often doesn't do as much as they hoped for...

Type 1 Type 1 diabetic and high cholesterol

Hi. We've all been offered statins as we have diabetes and/or elevated Total Cholesterol. If you have well-managed diabetes you are no different from a 'normal' person. Your Total Cholesterol doesn't mean much. You need to insist on a full lipids panel at you next blood test. This will show your...

    Meal schedule

Hi. You shouldn't need to eat rigidly to set meal times. If your BS control needs to be improved then you should probably be at least on Metformin which many of us take. Do keep the carbs in your meal down and rely more on fats and proteins.

    Beta cell failure in T2

So who's going to explain this to Prof Taylor! BTW I agree the beta cell failure is often inspired guesswork.

    Needle phobia and libre

Hi. Every time I do mine I worry a bit but it never hurts when I actually do it. Always use an alcoholic wipe and shave if needed before applying. Mine stick like glue - literally.

    Abbott and sensor problem

Last time I called from the UK using their website listed number I went into a queue for a few minutes and it was picked-up by someone outside of the UK which was no problem apart from poorer sound quality.

    Type 2 Carbs

Hi. I always say to try to keep below 150gm/day. Many manage to have a lot less. Bearing in mind Joe public may be having 300+ gm per day then 150 max is a good initial target max.

    How to keep weight on

Hi. Yes it could be late onset T1 and not T2 so do ask for the two tests for that as others have said. Fats and Proteins are the way to go. Don't bother with the dietician as so many haven't a clue.

    New Member to the club

Hi. Yes, do get a glucose meter - an essential piece of kit for us. There are many different makes but choose one that has low-cost test strips. It's best to avoid snacking too much as it's a bad habit when many snacks are high-carb. Cheese, nuts and berries are good. Overall choose food and...

Type 2 C-Peptide: can it be recovered?

Agreed. I can see no difference between someone who is T1 thru antibodies and someone who now has low insulin for whatever reason. Whatever type you use to define them the clinical reason is the surely the same - dead beta cells.

Insulin pooling under my skin and some spikes

Yes, I have absorption problems with 4mm and lumpy flesh. I rotate as much as I can but the lumpy areas do slow up absorption for an hour or so.

    Struggling

Hi. I hope you get more support from your surgery. Note that Statins have nothing to do with diabetes and should only be prescribed if your blood tests show your various lipids (cholesterol) ratios are not good i.e. LDL, HDL, Trigs etc
