    Type 1 Help?

@Alex_B once you disclose you have diabetes to any optician you will get an eye test on steroids (forgive the pun) completely FOC.... paid for by the NHS. You will have to pay however for any glasses you buy, unless you are eligible for any other discounts through other routes. My advice is...

    Recently diagnosed type 2

Complete respect @806cat I wouldn't dare to suggest what you must or must not do .... we are all soooo different. For me, hitting the phys has brought my numbers (and weight) well down .... I am no longer in the diabetes range. I find it had given me a degree of flexibility as to what I can...

    Recently diagnosed type 2

This is true, and I might get hit by a bus tomorrow, or struck by lightening.... but will cross that bridge when I get there .... just as I did when I was first labelled.... but I now have the knowledge to do what I need to do when (or if) that happens. For me the glass is half full .... not...

Can I Read Anything Into My First Few Days if Meter Use

Lidl Roll are good but I do find them chewy and 'heavy going' sometimes. I am a convert to Burgen Bread which you can find in most Sipermarkets. It is 9g of Carbs per slice which is about half of normal bread (and very tasty). I find a couple slices nice with scrambled or poached eggs to have a...

    Type 1 Alcohol

I recall my first 'night out' post labelling. It was a really good friends stag weekend. I wasn't particularly looking forward to it as I felt unable to relax and 'join in' as I would have done. I took it steady and alternated drinks ... I did still have a few beers! Towards the end of the...

    Type 1 Alcohol

Before I was 'labelled' I had a long standing marriage to Stella (probably part of the reason it bit me!). I too went into quite a period of 'celebacy' aftterwards. However, I've now divorced Stella and have quite a cordial relationship with Gordon and his good friend Hendrick!.... though I...

    Eating out

I was in Pizza Hut a few weeks ago. I had a few visits to the salad bar Garlic mushroom, and then had a lovely Meat Feast Pizza. I opted for the thin crust one, and didn't eat the crust round the edge ... I also had a couple of beers (but no more - they are damned expensive in there). I was...

Time for new NHS diet guidelines?

I completely agree. This may be playing with semantics, but it is no longer acceptable in the clinical world to describe patients as 'arthritic' or 'eplileptic' .... but it is to describe them as 'diabetic'. I am not defined by my condition ..... clinically I don't have one! (Currently!)...

    Recently diagnosed type 2

For what this is worth, I was 'labelled' just over a year ago with hba1c of 97, so a bit more than yours!! I made it VERY clear at that time I did not want ANY medication, and was going to beat this ...., which in fairness the HCPs have respected. (See my recent post in testimonials - 'Thank You...

    What to eat/drink at wedding

There is an old saying that 'one swallow doesn't make a summer. ...... I make an analogy of this which probably fits for the vast number of 'T2s' with no other issues. A bit of porkpie and wedding cake won't make a complication.... For goodness (and sanity) sake just enjoy the day like any...

    What to eat/drink at wedding

I routinely attend formal functions as part of my job including 3/4/5 course dinners, and buffets Canapés etc, and there is always good choices to make. I have NEVER had the need take my own food or fast to any event, and would consider such a move to be both discourteous, ridiculous..... and...

I could not agree more ..... I know I most definitely would - and do!

    Newly diagnosed

@Tuco Getting on the bike worked for me .... in spades! I took advice from all quarters, NHS, here, et al .... a mixture of all of these worked for me! I Didn't test for quite a while and achieved what I did without it .... but do so occasionally now .... just as a bit of a sanity check...

    exercise

The dictionary definition of exercise ...... 'activity requiring physical effort, carried out to sustain or improve health and fitness'. .... hits the nail on the head, covers all of the above and sums it up I think!.... whatever works for you is good!

type 2 - water sports holiday

I remember well the day I was 'labelled'. I was due to go on a long 'lads away' weekend - with all the trimmings!! I asked the Dr how I should manage this. He smiled, winked and said go and have a good time - a few more days won't make a difference here, but you need to get on top of it soon...

    exercise

@Hemmy Please take a look at a post I made yesterday in the Testimonials forum. See what has worked for me! I've smashed it from both ends - Diet AND exercise!, no medication! You don't need to be Chris Froome or Bradley Wiigins for this to work, but you have to enjoy it for it to endure!

    Thank you Diabetes!!!

Happy to do so ... though I hope the message will be the same .... well I've already signed up for next years Ride 100 plus London to Brighton and a couple of others in between!

    Thank you Diabetes!!!

@Guzzler thank you very much for your kind words I am very flattered. As it stands (currently) I don't see myself as diabetic any more given ALL of my 'stats' are well into the 'normal' zone, and I take no medication to achieve that, nor do anything different to what I should have been doing -...

    Thank you Diabetes!!!

Dear all, I am but now a very infrequent visitor here (for a number of reasons), but thought I would 'pop in' and perhaps provide a bit of hope for those who are (as I was) terrified, and new to this world when I was 'visited' by Diabetes. 15 months ago as a 51 year old, as part of a fairly...
