    Lunches at work

The M&S ones gave me the idea to do this at home. I use a really good slice of ham rolled up with a slice a slice of Gauda. Yumdynomnom. Another idea I got was for the home made version of M&S Texas Slammer which is a piece of strong cheddar with a layer of high meat content sausage around it...

    Prediabetes Blown it!

It is not the test in three months that should worry you the most. The HbA1c is an average so it will miss the very high spikes and any low readings that a glucometer at home shows you. And it is the spikes that cause the damage in the long run along with elevated insulin levels.

    Secondary cardiovascular disease statins

Well done, that lass. Smashing news.

Dr Gerald Shulman - Banting Lecture on Insulin Resistance

There was mention of CICO. No mention of specific dietary approaches.

Interpreting negative comments by clinicians towards Low Carb

Wrt the dietary advice I was given at diagnosis, it would be interesting to see just how long Practice Nurses and Diabetes Specialist Nurses are required to study nutrition as a part of their general training or specialist training. Having seen so many debates about different dietary approaches...

Dr Gerald Shulman - Banting Lecture on Insulin Resistance

I started watching this last night but decided that it needed my full attention plus coffee this morning. It looks really good. Edit to add. After a couple of false starts I have now seen the lecture in full and while I cannot pretend to have understood all the biochemistry I have a few...

How much does what you eat in the weeks before AIC test matter?

The A1c is an average of the last few weeks rather than a snapshot. I would advise that you concentrate your efforts on staying on the waggon rather than worrying about the effects of a wobble in the past that you cannot change. We have all done it at some stage. Fingers crossed (bet you are...

    things I am grateful for

What a great way of looking at things! I am grateful for less pain and easier movement. I am grateful for better mood and increased confidence in the future. And I too am grateful to the members, volunteers and staff of DCUK.

    Pre Diabetes Questions

Hello and welcome to the forum. I can only tell you a little about the statin. Statins are known to raise blood glucose levels and there is said to be a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes for those taking them. With dietary changes you can make a difference to A1c levels in 30 days...

Food brands / designed for Diabetics

Could you trust the brands to be honest? Some of the so called healthy, high protein bars are loaded with carbs and the manufacturers, having to comply with labeling rules, make it a nightmare to work out if it is 100g weight or portion size etc wrt nutritional information. Very little...

Links to studies supporting Low Carb/showing calorie restriction ineffective?

Could this not be put down to upbringing or habit? I do indeed leave food on my plate when I am satisfied and if there is too big a serving for me I know I won't finish it. The differences I have seen by the change in macros is that now I know I will not be hungry two and half hours after a meal...

I know what satiety means. Fundamentally it means the difference between success and failure.

I said 'almost impossible'. Which is true.

Interpreting negative comments by clinicians towards Low Carb

Might I add this one, please? Paraaphrased. But this low carb seems to be working for me, Doctor. My 5 years of training trumps your n=1 And my 15 years of battling this disease trumps your training... apparently.

Links to studies supporting Low Carb/showing calorie restriction ineffective?

Agreed. CICO is fine for automatons and machines using fossil fuels, variables can be measured precisely and end results can be fairly well predicted simply because there are so few variables. Then there's us, we pesky animals who are affected by illnesses, stress, motivation and personal...

Links to studies supporting Low Carb/showing calorie restriction ineffective?

It wouldn't be necessary only because a boffin cannot measure it, and would probably conclude that it was worthy of dismissal. When in the real world it is probably why CICO diets fail so regularly.
