Dr Gerald Shulman - Banting Lecture on Insulin Resistance

Ivor Cummins posted this lecture on his Youtube channel as:

Critical Viewing on Insulin Resistance - Banting Medal for Scientific Achievement - Gerald Shulman

Thanks have marked to watch later.

I started watching this last night but decided that it needed my full attention plus coffee this morning. It looks really good.

Edit to add.

After a couple of false starts I have now seen the lecture in full and while I cannot pretend to have understood all the biochemistry I have a few take-aways from this inc. non fat mouse study and the severe lipodystrophy study.
Well worth another view (or two).
Thanks for posting.

Well worth the 58 mins.... great lecture, very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Great lecture. It got my attention & held it..

Cheers for posting this up.

He shows lots of biologic loops that results in
"Inslin resistance + carbs" leading to increased "inslin resistance"

Along with a few ways of breaking these loops (exercise, metformin, weight lose) and a few noval targets for possible new drugs that may also break these loop. However way has his team not research the option of removing the carbs?

There was mention of CICO. No mention of specific dietary approaches.

I managed to follow parts of it. As follows:
An approximately 10% weight reduction provides a great improvement in Insulin Resistance.
A single bout of exercise of approx. 45min can give a large temporary improvement in Insulin Resistance
It is fat stored in the Liver and in Muscle tissue, not sub-cutaneous fat which drives Insulin Resistance, which is why some Obese people are non-diabetic and why some 'healthy BMI' people have type-2 Diabetes.

What I couldn't figure out was what he said about a high fat diet in Mice. - Did that make Insulin Resistance better or did it make it worse ?
