    A GP's Take on T2 Self-Monitoring

Although not one to panic easily when I was told that I had an appointment in 5 hours for an ECG I was a bit thoughtful. I have had an irregular heartbeat for some time now, and it was interesting to see the display making sense of it - one set of nerves is firing off early, disrupting my...

    Turmeric benefits for retinopathy?

I sometimes make scrambled eggs with turmeric and black pepper despite usually eating it plain. I keep the turmeric on a shelf visible from the cooker and get a sudden thought to use it.

Lack of low carb options in stores!!

I have no trouble filling my fridge and freezer from what I find in Lidl - all under 11% carbs except for the chocolate, which I eat very sparingly anyway.

    Husband just diagnosed, reassurance needed

My first thought was one which would get a red flag. Calm now. If your husband is a typical ordinary type two then it is all about the carbs. Fewer carbs in the diet, more protein and fats and in a few months when retested all should be well again. You can use a meter at home to check that...

    Oldvatr; sad news.

I believe it was Oldvatr who wrote 'it doesn't matter how many times you fall, only that you always get up again' That might be why I chose Resurgam - I will rise again.

    Another year on

I do add a sweetener to hot lemon when I make it, but tea and coffee are not sweetened. I eat high cocoa chocolate, as they have much less sugar than 'ordinary' bars. I put double cream in my coffee No cake/pastry/crisps/bread which is not seriously low carb/fast food. Yes to butter, and to all...

Just Got my Casual "Oh your blood test showed prediabetes"

Your eggs are too fresh. Let them stand for a few days and they'll be easier to get out of the shells.

    Low carb alternative flours!!

I found that a breadmaker is too rough for the more delicate dough for a low carb bread. it needs a gentle second mixing by hand to get a good rise, in my experience.

Just Got my Casual "Oh your blood test showed prediabetes"

But surely you want to have muscle and not fat deposits - especially around the waist which is where type twos tend to develop a 'bay window' effect. Fats are not simply stored, they are the basis for a lot of substances within the nervous system and also for hormones - so you don't want to be...

Just Got my Casual "Oh your blood test showed prediabetes"

I don't quite get why you think that low carb is low calorie - it is, if necessary quite a high calorie diet. Any cut of meat, as long as it is not very lean is a good choice.

Just Got my Casual "Oh your blood test showed prediabetes"

Well - if you stop eating high carb foods you'll have a good chance of going back to normal numbers, but you might need to start eating steak and other meat, fish and some eggs and cheese as those are the foods which an ordinary type two can cope with.

On the Way - not quite there yet.........

Chocolate is fine - it is the loads of sugar in the 'normal' bars which causes the problems. I buy the highest cocoa content bars I can find and don't eat much at a time. I am down to one square at a time and usually don't have more than two squares in 24 hours. I am hoping to find 95% bars...

    baking

If you have been reducing the amount of sweetness in your diet do be careful following recipes as they can be sickeningly over sweetened when made to be 'normal'. These days I find peas and beetroot taste sweet,

Feeling a bit fed up with it all......here follows the pity party

At diagnosis, although I think my liver was not in a bad way, it was huge. I had a sort of bay window, and it was rock hard. If I bent over my ribs were pushed out, and that really hurt. Over the time I have been eating low carb my waist and shape have altered a lot, and I suspect that all the...

Why can’t diabetics be treated the same when having medical procedures

Way before diagnosis I was seen by the nurse in the morning and had to go back to see the GP in the afternoon. Both weighed me, and the doctor was going on about the huge lunch I had eaten in order to be so much heavier. I had drunk several glasses of water, but eaten nothing at all, but he...

    Low carb daily diets.

It is more the things I exclude rather than having particular meals which make the difference. For dinner tonight I had beef, mushrooms and mashed swede. My husband had the same beef with peas and potatoes. I do eat chocolate, but not the usual stuff, which is heavy on the sugar to make it...

    Coffee

I use cream in my coffee - coffee made in a filter device. It doesn't seem to affect my blood pressure though - but eating low carb does tend to reduce blood pressure problems if you have them.

2 week update, I think it's going ok.

@retrogamer you can still have real custard, and apple crumble with almond flour crumble is low carb enough for an occasional dessert. There are several very good low carb recipe sites, lowcarblondoner is one such.

    Metformin

I took Atorvastatin and Metformin for about 5 weeks and suffered both physical and mentally - it also took about 18 months for the pain to go completely, and I hammered my memory for a long time to try to be able to regain just part of what I'd been able to do. even approaching 7 years from...
