93 year old T2, empagliflozin, low carb and alcohol

Am I right in assuming that the low carbing is fairly recent? When I began to eat low carb every day after being diagnosed type 2 and ignored the GP's diet printout I saw and felt a lot of difference in my well being. Your father might find that it is the low carb diet, not another medication...

Type 2 New and not understanding

You seem to have grasped the basic method quite well, so don't put yourself down. If prediabetic then a few changes might be all that is needed - just getting rid of the concept that eating lots of brown starchy food is healthy would be a good start. I only eat twice a day. at around 12 hourly...

    T2 HbA1c results

Todays result 43. Near enough to last years 42 for things to be considered stable.

    Dairy and diabetes 2

There doesn't seem to be any reason to avoid dairy, or any foods which have protein and fat. Insulin resistance is not something usually measured or even mentioned to type 2s.

    Amount of carbs

I cut open the packet of chicken and throw however many of them are needed for the meal into the pan - close the lid, switch on and set the timer. When they are cooked I lift them out and throw in the mushrooms, set it for 6 minutes cooking, so I just have time to give my husband his dinner and...

    Amount of carbs

Oh the Tefal Actifry I have is very old indeed - it has a timer, and that is it. Today I put the pan and the clear part of the lid, which is detachable, into the dish washer for a clean up after half a packet of chicken thighs for dinner yesterday, then cooked the other half today, with more...

    Amount of carbs

But that's the best bit!! I have an old Tefal Actifry and use it for chicken thighs - and the skin goes all crunchy with a fair bit of it mysteriously evaporating as it is lifted out ..... The fat ends up in the bottom of the pan and is great for cooking mushrooms or stirfry whilst the skin...

Not enough time for anything other than the absolute minimum

No, I have to go to the surgery and get them as part of the 'annual check' I am supposed to get. I was told that I have had an annual check every year since passing 40 - well that is news to me. Once I was diagnosed with diabetes I was given a bit more attention, but nothing exactly check -...

Has anyone known of, or experienced, being diagnosed Type 1, only to be told that they are actually Type 2?

The best man at my sister's wedding was told he was type 1 and put on insulin - struggled for a very long time with hypos, lost his HGV licence, his job, his house, wife and family. Then the consultant at the hospital he attended retired and he got an urgent phone call telling him to stop using...

Not enough time for anything other than the absolute minimum

After various problems and delays I eventually got my blood samples taken today. The nurse told me that I was overdue for various checks being done, but she had to give me another appointment as she did not have the time to fit them into her schedule for today. I don't know if I should be...

Questions re first diabetic nurse appointment tomorrow.

It might take a bit longer for things to get back to normal - I don't weigh myself after decades of heavy handed comments from HCPs about my non compliance with their instructions to lose weight, but I think it took a month or two to begin once I was told I was type 2.

    a bit of advice

Wanting to have a nap might indicate a meal too high in carbohydrates - it is both starch and sugar you need to tot up to see what the impact might be. I found that 'healthy' carbs made almost exactly the same spike as pure sugar, so don't differentiate at all between sourcese of carbohydrate...

How many limiting carbs can a Type 2 without any medication take in a meal (Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, no snacks)?

If all is going well the testing after eating will show both how the meal suited you plus your progress towards normal numbers. I altered my meals until I was seeing under 8mmol/l at the 2 hour point, and kept to the same meals - but then I saw that my numbers were going down little by little. I...

    In denial

You could use high cocoa chocolate in low carb cooking, or grate/chop and mix into real icecream, or use cacao powder to make desserts. Fruit is a poor substitute, though I make sugar free jelly with berries once in a while, and that is low carb enough even for me - plus I can't eat the lot, as...

    Bad day

I will be having pork and mushrooms tonight, possibly with stir fry. When I was out shopping I had cramp and bought some salted peanuts and water, which got rid of it, but I an now really hungry for the first time in years and have been eating all day. Perhaps I might try some chocolate. I...

    Which diet(s) are people using?

I am just over 5 years into normal numbers, diagnosed late 2016. Only problem is needing new clothes as I change shape.

    Here is my compilation

Carbs in apple are more usually 11%. I give myself permission to eat apples from my own trees, as it is so close to the 10% which is the usual maximum. Carbs in salted peanuts 7.3% - I bought some as I had cramp going to the supermarket today and salt usually sorts it - it did. I won't have any...

    upping Metformin

You might see a normal HbA1c, or certainly be much reduced from diagnosis - you could just ask what good it will do to take more tablets and decline the increase. If for some reason there is not much improvement then it ought to set off alarm bells indicating that you are something more...

Meds that also help with weight loss

Eating a low carb diet should prove to be very effective in reducing your blood glucose levels. Many people find that one they get their levels down to around normal it becomes easier to lose weight. I have lost loads and am not even trying. I don't restrict calories because that never worked...

    WHAT

If it is not cancelled again I am to see the nurse at the surgery in a week or so. I realised quite recently that I had elevated glucose flagged many years before diagnosis, and it was never mentioned, just pushed to eat low fat high carb all that time. My weight increased and I reported many...
