    Post your mug shots!

Here is a picture of me taken a few years ago. I really enjoyed that day at the seaside.

Hi, Suzi. Glad to hear I didn't bore you. Shame about the rain on your holiday, though. I didn't think to add anything about coeliac but you're right, they are well catered for with gluten free products in the supermarkets and special dishes in many restaurants. If you're going to eat out...

Looking back over the 18 weeks we’ve spent in Central California since October 2008 there are a lot of good things to say about travelling there if you’re diabetic. The supermarkets carry a wide range of sugar-free or low carb products including, astonishingly, maple syrup. I hasten to add...

Would it taste so nice if eaten often?

Hana - I've found that while normal pasta sends my BG levels sky high, a blueberry muffin has a far less drastic effect, so I can have one a week without any noticeable difference. Lucky? You bet, but I haven't tried a croissant, even though they were served up for breakfast every day last week...

Hi there, Viv. That makes four of us now on this forum who have spent time in this wonderful area. We’ll have to set up a club – California Dreamers, perhaps. :D I had started a reply to you a couple of days ago and had almost finished it when the computer gave a hiccup and all my hard work...

We are now home after a journey that went smoothly and was on time all the way from San Francisco to Heathrow, transfer to Gatwick and then Gatwick to Luxembourg. Our friends were waiting at the airport and we were having a cup of tea at home 30 minutes later. The bad news is that we didn’t...

    Dreamfields Pasta

My experience is the same as a couple of other posters. Don't overcook it - in fact, you should be very strict on this and use a timer. It tastes as good as any other pasta whether you make a bolognese sauce or a carbonara or make up your own. I also use the rotini to accompany Hungarian...

It’s arrived – our last full day! Tomorrow we catch the BA afternoon flight from San Francisco to Heathrow. Despite it being the end of our long break in Central California I’m looking forward to the flight as this time we’ve been assigned seats on the upper deck and we’ve never been up there...

    Bill's Travels

“These round-the-world-trips look interesting,” remarked my wife as she thumbed through a brochure. That piqued my interest as we had never gone round the world in one trip. Also, the journey offered consisted of flights and hotels, but after that the traveller is one his own. That was our kind...

    best sweetner

I second that, Hana, 100%. I had a look at that site and if you read to the bottom you will see that it is promoting a weight loss programme. 'Nuff said. There also a lot of junk science in the article - chlorine is a carcinogen we are told. That, of course, is why it is used as a purifier in...

    Overcoming prejudices

Like a couple of other posters here, I love the English language. Compared to other languages, it is so flexible and allows us to play with words in a way that will have the hearer in stitches (see Ken Dodd's act for the best examples). I don't blame anyone who makes mistakes as they are...

Ah, Dennis. Now you’re talking about something we didn’t quite get around to this time. The furthest we’ve been so far is Bodega Bay, which is worth a stop whenever you’re in the area. I had vague plans of driving up further this time, spending a few days on the trip, but it’s high season at the...

    California Dreaming 2

We trundled a couple of miles north the other day to have my daily exercise walk in Capitola, a pleasant little town just north of Aptos. We had a look at the shops then went onto the wharf, walked to the end to have a look at the restaurant there which had been recommended to us and took a...

Well done, Suzi. I hope the morning after wasn’t too bad, or at least, not so bad that a couple of pain killers wouldn't do the trick. My hypo is all over and done with, and that’s another set of symptoms I’ll be aware of. Shame about the pan seared scallops, though. They were delicious but I...

    California Dreaming 2

Last Monday was another domestic day, grocery shopping and domestic chores, but on Tuesday we went down to Carmel as we had been promising ourselves dinner at the Mission Ranch, next to the Carmel Mission. We had stopped off there for a drink with our friends some years ago and had been...

    Tofu

Never tasted tofu, Broads? Lucky you! It's one of the most disgusting products ever to be put before a hungry person. Has no taste, has a texture like that kids' toy, Slime, and when in your mouth it feels like you would imagine eating bogies to feel like. It is to food what Andy Murray is to...

    Bill's Travels

As history buffs, the prospect of a Nile Cruise was really attractive to to us when we picked up a Thomas Cook brochure. It wasn’t just the lure of the Pyramids, but the thought of viewing this river that had been the centre of one of the world’s greatest civilizations that sang such a siren...

    calories in salads

I absolutely agree, Hana. I make my own sauces, salad dressings and desserts just because I want to know exactly what my family are eating. I don't trust manufacturers to be as careful about their ingredients as I am. And it doesn't take much more time and effort to do it myself than to open a jar.

Well, the pasta spiked my BG levels but along with my medication I got it down fairly quickly. The evening itself went very pleasantly as our hosts, Susan and Ted, had invited another couple from across the street so the conversation flowed smoothly. It’s now time to invite Susan and Ted back...

Aah, Suzi. If it lives in the sea and has a shell, I’ll eat it (except for winkles). I’ll go for mild white fish as well, but I really can’t stand the oily fish like herring or mackerel. I just dislike the ‘fishiness’ of them, whatever the food fascists are trying to force down our throats. But...
