Prescribed Metformin but wondering I can do this on diet alone

Good idea, why not rinse it at home and bring it with you in a container? Then all you have to do is tip it on your plate. The less bother it is to your host, the more acceptable, IMO. I find cold konjac rice perfectly enjoyable, and anyway the curry should warm it up somewhat. I am envying you...

    HbA1c normal

Why would you realise this, when the majority of health professionals haven't yet grasped it? My (very kind) GP when recently prescribing a med. for me replied to my objection that it might raise my bg by proudly quoting its label - "sugar free". I had to point out that it did contain...

Looking for low carb and low or no (saturated) fat breakfast ideas?

@MrsT 123, I have a cholesterol problem similar to yours, but alas with a persistently higher A1c. My aim is to lower my triglycerides and improve my HDL-to-total cholesterol ratio. For the HDL, I plan to increase exercise, but for the moment health problems have rather scuppered that. For the...

    Metformin and Increase in Urination

Starting a low carb diet is a known cause of increased urination. This means it is important to drink extra to avoid dehydration (and so constipation). Eating low carb long term can also lead to constipation, as I know to my cost, and I think I have seen posts by others here who also struggle...

Struggling, why am I doing this?

@MrsA2, since your hubby / puppy is so nice and really wants to help, could you sit him down at a tactfully chosen time and say you really need his help and what that help would be? Spell it out and show how you trust his good will and intelligence? Going along with a pretence that he is helping...

What a long way you have come!!!

Struggling, why am I doing this?

Believe me, I do share your outrage! I eat VLC and am under rather than over-weight, but my bg doesn't seem to care. I see that others began with far higher A1cs than me and with weight to lose, and yet now are rightly proud of their far lower numbers. I don't follow the forums where people...

Struggling, why am I doing this?

Wow, this speaks to me! Glucose intolerance forced me to give up my preferred Mediterranean / semi-vegetarian diet. Part of me still strongly dislikes the idea of eating cows and pigs, but another part of me longs to eat a huge steak, perhaps with bacon on the side. Every time I pass a steak...

    Need help

You need to say more about yourself, your diabetes, your problems and how you are trying to cope with them. People here are very helpful, but they do need a few clues to go on!

    @Oldvatr I'm so sorry.

Please help me understand: sugar isn't "poison" for T2D

I believe glucose is best for correcting hypos rather than other forms of sugar eg sucrose as it is absorbed faster?

the same old same old (rant)

@Oldvatr thanks very much. Have you come across the suggestion that exercise can help with Parkinsons? I read an article by a young woman who reckoned she had at least greatly delayed its progression by vigorous exercise biking.

    Regular moderate exercise log

@zauberflote did you say somewhere you are 78? That is my age, but I wouldn't dare go near a ballet class, despite my lifelong admiration for that kind of physique and movement. So well done!!!

That's a fascinating suggestion. Please could you point me towards any references?

    Cheese flush

Yes, for me it is one of the unexpected consolations for having to give up so many higher carb foods that lower carb foods I used to loathe now taste delicious. For example, 100% cocoa chocolate and cooked spinach. Mind you, having permission to fry all vegetables in the best olive oil makes a...

    HbA1c normal

Yes, 39 is considered "normal" in the UK. From 42 to 47 is classed here as pre-diabetic. 48+ diabetic. However, in the US pre-diabetes starts at 38.8. Some people here have managed to get their A1cs down from diabetic to well below 38 and I wish I could emulate them. Sadly, despite eating VLC...

    Metformin and Increase in Urination

@Lmcfall You don't say if you are taking the slow release form of Metformin. Many people find that easier to tolerate. Also, Glucophage is sometimes considered easier on the stomach than the generic forms of Metformin. As regards carb lowering, sugars are by no means the only carbs. The only...

    Regular moderate exercise log

@zauberflote, I thought of you as I enjoyed this article on the agonies of a return to ballet classes: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/first-person/article-adult-ballet-classes-are-not-for-the-faint-of-heart/

Awaiting blood results to see if I’m diabetic

Not necessarily, could be a panic attack (they can feel really awful) or something else entirely. While you await your results on Wednesday, why not cut down on carbs just as an experiment. If raised sugars are the culprit, this should help. If not, no harm done.

Rising BG after exercise, how long until this stops?

I do this regularly and my bg almost always goes up in response, but not always. I have seen it suggested that if one's bg rises after exercise one should continue the exercise longer and it will go down again. So far I have not been able to bring myself to do this so I have no idea if it would...
