Prescribed Metformin but wondering I can do this on diet alone

Back after a bit of a break, after trying out 500mg/day metformin for a week. On a good day, it's knocking 0.5 mmol/L of my Libre average, and on a not so good day, that's more like 0.2. In a Tesco 'every little helps' way, that's all good. Ultimately, it's not worth the risks and side effects...

Prescribed Metformin but wondering I can do this on diet alone

Ever wish you'd minded your own business? Digging through some of my mum's old stuff, and I found a point where she must have been regularly testing and recording her figures. 2014, which would have made her 74 at the time. Her figures are better than mine, quite often getting sub 5's, which I...

So upset with myself - HB1ac of 87

Wearing a Libre, I have noticed that certain kinds of exercise, such as fairly leisurely cycling, spike me quite badly. More intense exercise methods, such as breaking a proper sweat on the exercise bike, do not. I hypothesise that my body releases sugar upon realising it is being exercised, but...

Prescribed Metformin but wondering I can do this on diet alone

I initially decided to leave the Metformin and just change my diet. I only had my meter for 2 days prior to changing over, but I was immediately seeing wake-up fasting figures down into the 7's from the 9's. I was consistently staying below 10, when bread would take me as high as 12.5. I'm not...

Prescribed Metformin but wondering I can do this on diet alone

Well I've invested in a new Libre (just waiting for it to settle in - still getting some crazy readings) and filled my prescription for Metformin. I'm going to start taking one a day with breakfast and see if it impacts my averages, which seem to settle just below 7 unless I do something stupid...

Prescribed Metformin but wondering I can do this on diet alone

An interesting experiment last night, and I'm wondering what others' thoughts are on the results. I made a paella, of which my portion was 75g of dry rice (not sure of the cooked weight) but I boiled the rice for 5 minutes, before thoroughly rinsing in cold water, to try to flush out a lot of...

Prescribed Metformin but wondering I can do this on diet alone

Another 7+ blood reading this morning. Nuts to it, I'm going to try the Metformin, probably starting Monday. Hopefully a minimal dose will tweak things down somewhat.

Type 2s: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning? (very low chat level)

8:30am: 7.4 blood, 8.6 Libre. The good news is that the Libre is still fairly consistently overreading by an average of around 1mmol/L, which would make my 24 hour average around 5.9 (corrected from 6.9.) The bad news (or possibly other good news) is that I've finally accepted that the diet...

Prescribed Metformin but wondering I can do this on diet alone

The nurse at my GP practice told me to try to keep it below 9. Researching it myself, that's wrong for a T2, and is the UK recommendation for a T1. If you maintained a steady 8.5, then that would equate to the 52. However (as I understand it) the UK recommendation for Type 2 is to not exceed...

Prescribed Metformin but wondering I can do this on diet alone

I think it's more statistics than individual's wellbeing driven. When you crunch the numbers, you probably find that chucking drugs at people and suggesting easily made modifications to diet is the most cost-effective way of managing diabetes at a national level. Of course as the person who has...

    How did your neuropathy start?

I'm watching this with interest, too (spotted the thread a few days ago and then lost it.) I have no diagnosis of neuropathy. It's something I haven't even spoken with the nurse about. But some things that have been going on for a few years potentially make sense in the context of diabetes...

Prescribed Metformin but wondering I can do this on diet alone

I can't say I've noticed it lower afterwards. But then my levels are generally all over the place in the range of around 4 to 8mmol/L. New lesson today: never trust a sausage unless you can read the nutritional label. I asked the Holiday Inn Express for some bacon and sausage (no bread) for...

    covid-19-trigger-diabetes ?

I was aware that it could damage organs other than your lungs. It seems reasonable that you could end up diabetic if it damages your pancreas.

Type 2s: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning? (very low chat level)

7:30am and it's a 6.9 blood and an 8.2 Libre. Not best pleased with either of those numbers. Stuck in a hotel in Scotland, which is basically socially closed at the moment, so I had quite a few beers in my room to pass the time last night. Perhaps that didn't help.

Type 2s: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning? (very low chat level)

7.3 blood at 8:30am, which was an 8.1 on Libre. Highest I've seen on Libre this morning is 8.6. No reason for it. Chicken + cauli rice + broccoli for tea last night, and nothing but pork crunch and 85% dark chocolate for snacks. Much more of this, and I think I'm kidding myself that I can do...

Where do you wear your libre sensor?

Chances are that neither is absolutely correct. That seems to be the nature of blood glucose testing: we have a choice of various random number generators, each roughly centred around what our blood sugar actually is. A quick Google shows an error allowance of 0.5% on the HbA1c blood test...

Prescribed Metformin but wondering I can do this on diet alone

I've had meals that should have spiked me and didn't, too. A small portion of chips with a mixed grill 2 days running, on a weekend away recently, that didn't upset my levels at all. I once did a paella (albeit rinsing the rice thoroughly 5 minutes in) and got a lower blood reading 2 hours PC...

Type 2s: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning? (very low chat level)

6.7 blood, 8.3 Libre at 9am. Within the realms of believability that the truth lies somewhere between, but I think the new sensor is still settling in.

Prescribed Metformin but wondering I can do this on diet alone

Fairly new to this myself, but learning rapidly. Cutting carbs is definitely your best hope of regulating your blood sugar without medication. The real debate for me is how low I want to get it (am I happy just staying below the 9 that the diabetes nurse told me to, or should I set a lower...

Type 2s: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning? (very low chat level)

5.8 blood just now, at 8:45am. My first sub-6 in quite a while. 7.5 according to Libre, but it's a new sensor, and probably still settling in.
