Low Carb Breckenridge Great presentations from Dr David Unwin and Charlotte from Diabetes.co.uk

I googled Low Carb Breckenridge and it looked to be in Denver? Is this the same conference? Reading the synopsis of the different speakers was interesting, I too would hope that the full presentations will be available online in the near future. Good find [emoji1303].

    So Frustrated....

Thank you for all your best wishes. I will continue with LCHF and exercise as long as I can while it works for me, whether it be months or years in the future. I am healthier now than I have been for decades. Although I have been diagnosed as LADA, different medics / DSN's have stated both T1...

Is 5.2 too low to go to bed on?

If you have good control and the benefit of DP, then it's fine to go to bed on that. I'm happy to retire at 4.2 as I know I'll rise up to at least 6.2 overnight, but as others have said, it is down to personal choice and your own circumstances.

    Dead in Bed Syndrome?

@Diabetes8 When my BGs were uncontrolled just prior to diagnosis and at diagnosis DIBS was a very real fear for me (I was very very ill at the time, far worse than even I realised). However as I brought my sugars down, the fear eased, and since getting my BGs under tight control, it remains a...

    starting lchf while on insulin

@Kristin251 Hi there, sorry to get you confused. I don't take ANY insulin at all now. I've just looked back through my old diaries, and see I last took a single unit of basal on 9-9-15, having stepped it down slowly from 12 units. I began reducing my bolus in May 2015 when starting LCHF. With...

    starting lchf while on insulin

Basal is background insulin; in my case Levemir. Bolus is quick-acting insulin; in my case Novorapid. The quick-acting is directly linked to the number of carbs you consume, hence why when going low-carb it's important to carb-count and reduce your insulin accordingly, otherwise you will hypo...

    Thyroidectomy

Hi @Speedbird I too had my thyroid and both neck lymph glands removed 30 years ago. Lymph glands no real issue and were a day admission only. The thyroid was 6 days inpatient; I recall being told off for not eating, just drinking as the throat was sore (like broken glass) but within 12 hours of...

    starting lchf while on insulin

I reduced my quick acting insulin via carb counting and test test testing. My background reduced much slower over a number of weeks, continuing my usual 6-8 daily tests. (I drive a lot). I'm not currently requiring any insulin, providing no meal exceeds 30g carbs with a total of 50-60g daily...

    insulin not working the same

Hello @doccydoo Are you following LCHF in your efforts to lose weight, and managing to keep up with daily exercise? Illness will often raise BGs, it's something we have to accept and work with, there's no magic cure and everyone is different. Things like cough medicine/lozenges are loaded with...

    Type1. high blood sugar

Hello @raghothama Firstly congratulations on being a senior diabetic businessman - you have obviously been doing something right all these years! I would look for anything that has changed in your day-to-day routine since the higher BGs have occurred; have you reduced the amount of exercise...

    Type 2 Diagnosed 3 weeks

@Darts_lad Is it normal - no Is it common to have some of these symptoms around diagnosis of D - yes; you are in a hyper state. Have you got access to a meter, so you can test regularly and build up a diary to show how your control is after meals? As a T2 it depends on your docs as to...

    So Frustrated....

Hi @Lenwe I would reckon that we can all remember a hyper-hypo loop until we took control of the condition. For me, this was by following LCHF and carb-counting; the combination of which took my Hba1c down from 101 to 51. It is now remaining in the 40's. Are you following a low carb...

    Ham

@wiseowl_123 It is the amount of carbs in the food which push up your BGs. Look on the back at the Nutrition box to see the amount, and this is a better guide than the traffic light system. We have some breaded ham in, and this is 1.3g per 100g. Given that equals 4 slices, the 1.3g will have v...

    Skin rash on face

Hi @nolly53 I find if I let my BGs climb into the 7's, my skin will rapidly dry and split - starting with the backs of my hands and spreading elsewhere. Hence if this happens I treat immediately with Diprobase cream which will restore it to good health within 2 days. The moisturiser my GP...

    Regular Hypo

@OllieThomas If you are reducing your carbs, then you will need to reduce your insulin as the two are interlinked. This is why people on LCHF often take tiny or no amounts of insulin, compared with a high carb lifestyle. Alas, due to DP, my waking BGs are rarely below 6, but knowing how my own...

Anyone else have those rare horrific hypos that last hours?

@Catsymoo It sounds like your levels of insulin are too high. If you are below 3.9 you are in a hypo state, and if you can't get control of it you should definitely call for help, and let the medics get you stable again. If you have taken on a huge amount of QA sugar such as a bag of jelly...

    the big C word

That's the spirit @himtoo ! If I looked back and analysed all the conditions I'd worked through in my life, I'd probably have half the alphabet! My C was 29 years ago, I had three lots of pretty invasive surgery, but hey- I'm here to tell the tale and like you have simply put it in my 'box' of...

Type 1: Could it be stress raising my BG level ?

@miszu Yes, I have found that stress DOES raise your BGs, for me quite dramatically. Hence we have had to change a few things to remove that issue. Do remember that D is not a condition where one treatment suits all; it's an individual thing and you need to find what works best for you. I'm...

    blood sugar after shower

A hot shower will raise my BGs by approx 1.5 units. I have tested immediately before and after a number of times and it's always the same. However, we are all different and as azure states; her levels drop with a shower rather than rise. Unless you test immediately before and after with no food...
