Tighter blood glucose control through medication linked to higher death risk

"However, the findings won't apply to those achieving excellent HbA1c levels, and experiencing other health benefits, through positive lifestyle change which inevitably influences mortality risk. People following a low carb lifestyle without hypo-causing medication, for example, should not be...

    Low carb coffee substiture

Carbs in coffee? I thought it had almost no nutritional value, just about zero everything including zero carbs. A little bit of potassium, and a pleasant amount of ... caffeine. Of course we are assuming that no sweetener or cream is added....

    New diagnosis for husband.

My sympathies to you both for your ailments. You are having a rough time. If you do decide to give the low-carb diet a go, given what you have explained, it would probably be extra-important to try to figure out how this interacts with your husband's (and your) prescription meds, both for...

Tighter blood glucose control through medication linked to higher death risk

One part that really gives food for thought is that those taking sulfonylreas fared best on "moderate" control. Both the tight-controllers and (unsurprisingly) the loose-controllers fared worse.

    New diagnosis for husband.

I am blushing. @welshgirl2228: I forgot to say that if the low-carb diet is suitable for him, it is quite possible your husband (and yourself, if you share his diet at least partially) will lose weight, maybe even quite a lot of weight. Some people in this forum were overweight or obese at...

    New diagnosis for husband.

Believe it or not, that is good news. "Lessen his carbs" is the advice that I was given too, but surprisingly few people are given that advice nowadays. Like him, I was diagnosed recently (in my case nine months ago). My doctor put me on a low-carb diet and with that, and without drugs, I was...

Sorry @bulkbiker, crossed posts.... (I agree not to wait until after Christmas ... but that is just me! And you!)

    New diagnosis for husband.

Welcome! I will tag @daisy1 who can provide useful information for newcomers. Yes that would help a lot. Also, do you know the result of his most recent HbA1c blood test? (Gosh @himtoo I'm flattered, hope I can live up to being tagged....)

Tighter blood glucose control through medication linked to higher death risk

Not being able to read the whole study, it is a bit frustrating not to know the causes of the extra mortality. They say that those were linked with taking meds that can cause hypos, but do they mean that the hypos caused the deaths? (Sorry if that sounds like a naïve reading, but the phrasing is...

Tighter blood glucose control through medication linked to higher death risk

It is sobering, for those who need drugs (in particular, sulfonylureas) to control their T2D. It does validate tight BG control done solely with lifestyle modifications, for those who are candidates for doing it that way. Then there is this: "It is important to note that this research only...

    Puzzled

I am sorry you aren't feeling well. Concerning the blood glucose testing, those who are suggesting you do it are giving good advice. It is not the only option however. I do not self-test, so rely entirely on the HbA1c test at the clinic every three months or so. Because I don't test, I have to...

    Solange

We cannot give medical advice here. If he is otherwise fit (i.e. "shaking a bit" is unusual) then, if I were in his place, I would assume it might be an effect of the Glimepiride and I would make sure to consult my doctor. I hope that people with personal experience of that drug (or other...

Far be it for me to give you advice on this, since perhaps they had other reasons to give that advice (other than just T2D). As I said, my doctor gave me the same advice ("no alcohol") initially, but I decided to let him put that in his pipe and smoke it! (It is, so far, the only part of my...

If you are Type 2, diet-controlled and not taking drugs, I have seen no evidence of any problem with wine. Except for perhaps certain dessert wines, wine is low-carb, especially dry wines. And especially if consumed only in moderation. By the way Champagne is great! More (really good!!) info...

    Solange

Some of us have successfully "reversed" our Type 2 diabetes (T2D) by adopting a "low carbohydrate" diet. By "reversed" I mean that our blood glucose (BG) levels are "non-diabetic." We still have the disease, but if we keep those BG levels low, we have a much better chance of avoiding the...

Welcome! You have been a member since early this year, but as that was your first post.... That reading of 80 was probably from the HbA1c test, which is described here: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/what-is-hba1c.html. I apologize if what I am about to say is "old hat" to you, since it is often...
