@9893973788: Changed my mind! Even though your query was specific to T2, it turns out that @fergus has been doing "the low-carb lark" for all those years (even as a T1). So his experience is relevant to us T2s, I think, at least somewhat! (But taking into account the big differences obviously.)...

Thank you. I have edited my original post to add that clarification. The experience of @fergus is great, but the OP specifically asked about T2, so my answer does not "fit" the OP's question.

Thanks. I know you are in the U.S. but added that PCP-to-GP translation for UK-based readers being faced with yet another medical acronym. By the way, for UK readers, that stands for "Primary Care Physician" and under a typical U.S. health insurance s/he is the gateway to all medical care...

    Thin Type 2 Diabetics

Welcome! As far as I know, the accurate way to figure out the visceral fat is with a particular kind of MRI where the machine is adjusted to highlight fat. Obviously this is an expensive and time-consuming test, so it is understandable that there is no mass screening for this type of thing...

There was someone who recently returned to this forum (only a few days ago I think). He was one of the very first members but had stayed away for a while. He is doing fine, 17 years later. Edited to add: It turns out the member in question is T1. (See the next posts.)

I was guzzling pecans and macadamias, so I guess if I resume nuts, go for macadamias (I like them, but they are pricey!). I used to eat a lot of Brazil nuts too, until I read about selenium poisoning!!! Pistachios: Relatively high-carb, IIRC (I absolutely love them and they were a big favorite...

Just wanted to share nice HbA1c result

Congratulations!!!!! Last night I dreamed I was sitting at a long lunch counter. The server was very slowly proceeding towards me, giving bread rolls to each of the other diners. He got to me, I grabbed the roll, had one bite, then remembered "whoops, I'm a Type 2 diabetic." Then the alarm rang...

‘Addicted’ or should that be Dedicated or Determined?!

Ahem, my turn, 1,000 posts, just got the "Addicted" medal. Albeit with a lot fewer "likes" than @Rachox whose example we can all learn from.... (These metrics are pretty artificial but have a fun of their own.)

Is it ok to have strawberries & blueberries with steel oatmeal in the morning

Another thing is if you look up the definition of "hunger" it is not really what we think it is. "Real" hunger is rare in advanced Western societies. It is characterized by violent and painful stomach cramps because the belly is empty, and of course, extreme malnutrition. It takes a long period...

Is it ok to have strawberries & blueberries with steel oatmeal in the morning

I was very hungry when starting the LC diet. This went away after a few weeks. Recently though (8 to 9 months into this thing) hunger has made its return, coupled with renewed (much slower, but real) weight loss. Not sure what is going on there. BG is under great control. I am eating like a...

Thanks, useful stuff. In that case I have never had a hypo, false or otherwise. I can't say it is an experience I regret not having....

Your a diabetic you can't have sugar

@leahkian if you are Type 1 (and I don't know whether you are) then indeed, the idea that you are not "allowed" sugar makes no general sense. So I guess context matters. As a diet-controlled Type 2, the stereotype is not wrong ("no sugar for you") except that the public doesn't understand that...

Your a diabetic you can't have sugar

In my opinion public knowledge of diabetes (I am not sure what type you are by the way) is not just zero, but negative, i.e. actually wrong most of the time. For that matter that was a perfect description of me when I was diagnosed. Impossible to go through the mountain of stuff that I did not...

Is it ok to have strawberries & blueberries with steel oatmeal in the morning

I apologize. I just noticed that this is in the T2 with Insulin forum -- my knowledge is not sufficient for this.

Is it ok to have strawberries & blueberries with steel oatmeal in the morning

Depends a bit on your goals, assuming you are pursuing a low-carb diet. I have blueberries and other berries (two blueberries, two raspberries, one strawberry) every morning with breakfast. I don't have oats, but I do eat a very small amount (one tablespoon) of home-made sugar-free granola with...

    silly question

Just a quick note. If your T2 sister-in-law is on Metformin (and no other drugs) hypos are, to my knowledge, extremely unlikely. Note that even people without diabetes can have hypos ("reactive hypoglycemia") -- so it cannot be ruled out completely. Of course this is a good question for her to...

    Alcohol???

After diagnosis I went tee-total for the first 2.5 months and adopted a low-carb diet forever. When the HbA1c result came back showing I had fully "reversed" my diabetes, I resumed drinking alcohol. The difference is that I used to be an immoderate beer drinker (and also wine). Nowadays, I drink...

    silly question

I knew that if you are taking some diabetes drugs or insulin, you can experience hypos as a T2 when lowering carbs. What about that "false hypo" though? Not something I had heard of. When I was very new to this diabetes stuff, I had only just started the low-carb diet. A few weeks in, I started...

    Thin Type 2 Diabetics

I have seen some studies that suggest moderate exercise -- such as 150 minutes of brisk walking per week -- has a (modest but useful) effect in reducing/controlling BG. Also some other data that seem to show converting fat to muscle (or changing the ratio to more muscle relative to fat) is...

Is it really necessary to test Ketones if eating low carb?

Excellent, thanks. For how long, do you think? (Not counting short lapses that don't really count.) Inquiring minds want to know! As for me, for the first two months after diagnosis, I was not only low-carb, low-fat, I was also severely portion-controlled. I think I may very well have been in...
