Is it really necessary to test Ketones if eating low carb?

I think you are absolutely right. I am still interested in this debate though. My understanding, from reading about this nine months ago at diagnosis (when, admittedly, I was terrified and confused) went something like this: Moderate low-carb, very-low-carb: fairly standard options that work...

Interesting. I am looking forward to reading this debate. Agree!

Is it really necessary to test Ketones if eating low carb?

AFAIK at 60g/day you can pretty much assume you are not in ketosis. I believe carb level needs to be considerably lower. But if you want to be sure, test.... Edited to add: According to the "ketosis" information collated by this website, it would be possible around 30g/day of carbs or lower...

    Diagnosed today

Welcome! The time after diagnosis, and before your first "diabetes appointment" with the nurse or doctor can be confusing. You may also feel some shock at the diagnosis -- I know that I did. This is a great place to get support from other people with diabetes, and garner information about their...

Diabetes is the cause of obesity or obesity is the cause of diabetes

Questions are always good, especially in forum like this one where we can try to educate each other. I personally see no "bad questions" in this forum. @hichamgsm, like me, is relatively new here and we have lots of questions!!! Internet research is part of the process of discovery, but asking...

    Struggling on keto

I must have phrased it badly. Let me try to clear up my confusing statements: Assuming that you are not actually in ketosis, having a single slice of pizza per week cannot undo the good work you have been doing. In my opinion. The trick is to keep such "excursions" relatively rare. Being "only"...

    Struggling on keto

So now is the time to pull up your socks, huh? I note that you have pre-diabetes so it's possible you can follow a "moderate carb" approach and still keep your numbers under control. But -- I hear you! -- sometimes it is just hard to do things "in moderation." (I know I find it hard!) Edited to...

Diabetes is the cause of obesity or obesity is the cause of diabetes

Obesity and diabetes are statistically asssociated. The direction of the causation is controversial. And even if it were a causative factor, it couldn't be the "cause" all the time because at least 10 percent of Type 2 diabetics are neither obese nor overweight at diagnosis. Plus, many obese...

    Struggling on keto

In my opinion, the literal answer is yes, if that is all you do, it is extremely unlikely that one pizza a week will make a difference. I cheat from time to time by drinking good beer, which is basically liquid carbs. Eating carbs can create cravings for more carbs. That is the main issue...

    Weekly weigh in - Fridays

I'm going to jump the gun a bit. Weight this morning is hovering between 69KG and 70KG so not far from dipping into "underweight" BMI territory. But as I explained last week, this does not bother me, because of my body type (full explanation in my post #2454 above). Today's news is that I...

    brussel sprouts

Thanks, it does help! I have been drinking lemon juice too, apparently it is important to get enough citric acid. I had already eliminated the spinach, and greatly increased fluid intake. Now I am giving up the nuts and hoping for the best. My last stone was a nasty piece of work and produced...

Most people with type 2 diabetes will also eventually need to use insulin.

You are doing great: you got a fantastic result in a short time. You are young, and as you said, will have to live with T2D for a lot longer than some of us. Getting things under control now, and keeping them under control, should stand you in good stead. In your place, I would be wondering...

    Blood Pressure: Mountain, Molehill?

Ironically, a year ago (just three months before my diagnosis) we had a big clearout and donated about 20 years' worth of our clothes to the local clothing bank. That included plenty of trousers that were probably the right size for me now!:wacky: Edited to add: Also donated my two wedding...

    Blood Pressure: Mountain, Molehill?

Heavy decisions today or in the next few days, which I won't go into (not pertaining to me, but a family matter of great importance). The only light diversion, once the rush-hour traffic is over, is going to the store to buy my first new pair of trousers in ages. Next week is the American...

    New favourite yoghurt (low carb)

Here in America I eat Chobani Greek yogurt. I have the zero-fat version, with 6g of carbs per 150g (which is 4g per 100g i.e. about the same as the OP's yogurt). They have a full-fat version which has the same carb content as the zero-fat version...

Foods with hidden sugar and carbs? What caught you out?

Thanks. I don't self-test (go on, flagellate me with a wet, low-carb zoodle:)). So I have to use rather "broad-brush" rules. I am indeed "very low carb."

Most people with type 2 diabetes will also eventually need to use insulin.

I am beginning to suspect that the very-low-carb diet is necessary to get a very low HbA1c (for a diabetic) such as the ones I list in my signature below. But your level, and the level reported above by @justism91, are both low enough to satisfy my doctor: he has told me that his goal is to keep...
