First thoughts when diagnosed? (Type 1)

I followed the classic "stages of grief", starting with denial! Not in that I refused to take my injections or test or anything like that. But no one in my family had it so we didn't really understand what it meant. I was home from Uni and my Mum came with me to the doctors because my little...

    The day has arrived!

Congratulations! Don't worry, it takes a little while to adjust your insulin levels but you'll get there!

    Is the pump attractive?

It's a very personal choice. For me I prefer the tubed pump because I find it gives me more flexibility in terms of where I can keep it. The one I have is also smaller than the Omnipod so I prefer the way it looks. Other people love their Omnipod though so I think it's just whatever suits your...

    Is the pump attractive?

This was something I was worried about before I went onto the pump . The reality is most people don't even notice it, and those that do, don't care after the initial interest. I mentioned my worries to a male friend and his comment was: "if anything you should be leading with it, what man...

5 different types of diabetes identified now

Why so cynical? Treatment doesn't always mean drugs. And even if it does who wouldn't want a treatment that is actually properly tailored to their condition? We already know what works for me won't work for someone else. Wouldn't you like your doctor to be able to give you better advice from...

    Advice on the insight pump

I love my insight :) but then it is my first pump so I don't have anything to compare it against. The handset can be a bit slow but certainly not to the point where I would ever consider switching to something else or giving it up!

    Weird or what?

Would it change anything? If it would change how you manage your treatment (for example you think there is a chance you might be type 2 rather than 1) then yes. Otherwise you will just be subjecting yourself to another test (and let's face it we do enough of those already!). I have never had...

Libre vs Dexcom. Anybody used them both?

I have used both and my preference is for the Libre. Neither of them eliminate the need for a finger pricking, so although I may get the odd sensor which isn't bang on I can get a feel for how far out it is. On that note I find the Libre is great when I am in range and I only really see drift...

    Unusual Hypo

Ah yes, once at work someone gave me a very important document that I needed to do something with urgently. I could feel I was dropping but with the panic of "you must do this now!" combined with a not fully functioning brain I decided to do the important thing first before dealing with the...

GP switches to just one type of meter and strips

As well as challenging it yourself it is also worth talking to your diabetic nurse or consultant as they can often exert a lot of influence over the GP. Good luck!

    Hypo vomit?

I'm sorry you had such a bad time, I can't imagine how frightening it must have been. I am glad to hear you are doing better now. When I was first diagnosed my DSN warned me that if I was ever given a shot of glucagon to have a bucket nearby because it would make you throw up. Maybe the...

    Overwhelmed

It is not a competition, there will always be someone better off or worse off than you. But that doesn't invalidate your feelings, you are allowed to feel angry, scared, or nothing at all and no one gets to tell you it is wrong. We would never dream of telling someone who was in a good mood...

    Advice for Males who pump

I am also not a dude but from my experience a pump belt sounds like it would help with a lot of your worries. I found it really helped by keeping the tubing under my clothes and when I do get changed or need the loo or just if my clothing moves around it doesn't move with it. I also worried...

    Sickness what to drink

Try sucking on an ice cube if you find even water is making you throw up. You still get to take on some water but slow and steady and the cold can help with the nausea. Hope you feel better soon!

    Cannula stops working during use?

When I was getting set up with my pump my DSN drove home that I had to change my canula every 3 days. The main reason being that your body will start to heal around the canula and so the insulin adsorption will drop dramatically. I have left my canula in for 4 days a couple of times when I was...

Type 1 Hypos at work - what to do?

Ignore the phone and treat the hypo. People generally won't know anything about hypos other than what you tell them and they will follow your lead on how to behave. So if they see you carrying on like normal without taking a break to stop and sort yourself out then they will assume that is how...

Any advice on travelling to India with insulin?

Also check with your work what to do if you get sick. My work insurance had a number to call if I got sick and then they would deal with arranging for doctors or medication rather than expecting me to try and deal with it or find the right people!
