I recommend that too, a great read.

    testing

I have, I didn't get any response, I don't think anyone would really notice. I also frequently inject insulin in public, people tend not to notice that either - I've been out for meals and had the people I'm with say "oh did you forget to do your insulin?" after I have already injected at the...

    Wrong needles

Today I went to collect my prescription from the pharmacy and found that the prescription was for the wrong needles - for "GlucoRx FinePoint" instead of for NovoTwist. I confirmed 3 times on the phone call on Friday all the items on my prescription! They are 5mm and 31G, I have been repeatedly...

    Just before you were diagnosed????

I was sleeping for hours and hours and when awake I was very tired and thirsty, and needing the loo a lot. I didn't notice any other symptoms.

    Insulin users. Your reactions.

Are non-mixed 'human' insulins available, in insulin pens, that would work with eg lie ins, going to bed early/late, non-fixed meal times, eating different things at different times?

    metformin type 2

NEVER do this with any tablet without first checking with a pharmacist or doctor. And if it's slow release metformin it must not be broken up at all. iirc, the slow release metfmormin were coated, and the generic regular ones weren't, so you might find the slow release ones easier to swallow...

    Insulin users. Your reactions.

Most of the stuff I read about this says something along the lines of 'analogue insulins are only slightly better than other ones'. So they are arguing that analogue insulins are better, so surely they should support them being widely prescribed?

ACCESS TO YOUR MEDICATION AS A HOSPITAL INPATIENT

They can be terrible, and take all your medication away and only give it back whenever the nurse decides it's convinient for him/her to do it. So if the drugs round is at 1pm, that's when you'll get your medication, even if you are supposed to have it at 2pm. It's not just people with diabetes...

Took novorapid when should have taken levimir!

I've done that in the past, I didn't notice at the time so just went to bed as normal, woke up a bit later feeling terrible with very low blood sugar. It was lucky I woke up when I did really. So noticing before you go to sleep is very helpful! It sounds like you treated the hypo in a sensible way.

So are we allowed to give blood?

I was told, when I rang the blood donation hotline to ask, the reason they didn't want blood from people with type 1 diabetes was that the blood would have fewer platelets than required. Though I had a FBC done twice earlier in the year, and they didn't mention any decreased platelet levels. So...

Testing BM when soap and water is not available???

I use my left little finger (I'm right handed) if I can't wash my hands, as it's probably the finger I use the least so won't have been touching food etc.

    help with bigger needles please

The nurse should be able to help with all of that, it's usually the DSN not the consultants that do all the needle stuff anyway, so the DSN might be more help actually than the consultant! Thanks for mentioning the amounts of insulin, it's reminded me I need to discuss my levemir dose when I...

    Confused :(

You need to mention beforehand to the nurse if you want things explained in less medical terms. If there was anything in particular she said that you didn't know what it meant, if you remember you can always ask on here and I'm sure someone will be able to explain. A hypo is below 4, that is...

    help with bigger needles please

In that case, you need to contact the Dr tomorrow and ask: 1) why is your daughter being asked to use 8mm needles for the Novorapid, as she is having no problems with novorapid and 5mm needles? 2) if the 5mm needles are not causing problems with the novorapid, why are they causing problems with...

When should you get medical help if on insulin?

If you were on a different insulin regime, with both fast acting and background insulin, you could just inject more of the fast acting. On just mixed insulin I have no idea what you could do. Maybe you could have spare pens of fast acting insulin for correction doeses, I think I've seen people...

Pay for your old age care.

I'd have no problem with a charge being put on my estate to cover the cost of my care, after all nice I'm dead I won't be able to spend it!

    help with bigger needles please

Most of this will have been covered by the consultant, but just in case anything was missed: I get a lump with 5mm needles unless I hold them at exactly 90 degrees to the skin, have you made sure she is not holding them at an angle? Do the 5mm needles cause a lump with the Novorapid on her...

idea for store sharps on the move

The clipped needle stub is still clinical waste, and must be disposed of in a sharps bin. See here: http://www.bd.com/uk/diabetes/page.aspx ... 3&id=31358 So I don't really see the purpose of this device!

How often do you change your needles/lancets?

I only use needles and lancets once, I can't see why anyone would want to reuse them really.
