Type 1 People don’t think about how food affects us

Your daughter is right really, but sometimes people almost demand an explanation. I've tried explaining to people but most can't or don't want to understand. Sometimes I find it easier to say I have an allergy or intolerance to something which elicits more understanding (and unwanted sympathy)...

    That is what I do.

Type 1 People don’t think about how food affects us

The main problem I find is that many people don't know that carbs have a negative impact on your BG. They'll happily give you a cup of coffee without sugar 'because I know you can't have sugar', and then give you a couple of sandwiches and a bun.

    Supermarket shopping

I don't get depressed, I just get angry! (This works for me because it makes me determined to leave such items on the shelf).

What was your bg reading last night and this morning?

6.4 at 11 last night 8.5 at 8:30 this morning

    Type 2 Rising BG. I don’t understand.

Just a thought but I don't suppose you are using a different meter or batch of test strips?

What was your fasting blood glucose? (with some chat)

How many hours between eating and testing constitutes a fasting test? I've given up testing in the morning as I don't see how any test can be worthwhile due to the impact of the 'dawn phenomenon'. When does this kick in ? Is it on waking or on getting up? I have my evening meal about 8 pm and...

PORRIDGE made with water or low fat milk?

I use almond 'milk' which has virtually no carbs/sugar.

T2 vs T1 stigma - anyone else feel a bit 'shamed' for having T2?

Oh yes. I'm 71, diagnosed T2 3 years ago. From the age of about 18 until diagnosis my weight was always between 147 and 154 pounds (now at 143 pounds - my height is just under 5' 11"). I always did physical work, cycled, walked, ran until a neurological problem in my mid 50s put paid to that and...

Accuracy Of Different Blood Glucose Meters

15% inaccuracy is ridiculous and shows how unconcerned meter/strip manufacturers are about our health concerns. How on Earth are T1s supposed to accurately measure their insulin needs with that amount of inaccuracy? I realise that 100% accuracy is unrealistic but the maximum inaccuracy should be 5%.

    Diabetes snobbery

Sorry you feel offended by my comment zand, but nowhere did I say that I have no sympathy with 'fatties' (by the way, I would NEVER use that term). My gripe, as I said, is with ignorant people assuming that if you have any type of diabetes it must be because you are (or have been) seriously...

3 DIFFERENT READINGS 3 DIFFERENT METERS 1 BLOOD SAMPLE

I use an Accu-check Aviva and the other day I had a reading 2 hours after breakfast of 11.7 which was a LOT higher than expected so I did another test (less than a minute later) which was 7.5. I know these things aren't 100% accurate but this amount of difference is ridiculous. Someone suggested...

    Diabetes snobbery

I've not experienced this (yet) although I know someone who has. My gripe is the number of people who think someone only becomes diabetic if they are obese. I am 5' 11" and have weighed between 10 and a half and 11 stones since I was 18 (I am now 71 and weigh 10 stone 7) and the first thing most...

    I'm concerned

There is some good advice here but may I suggest that the meter and/or test strips you are using may be faulty, or in need of re-calibrating, and giving untrue readings. Why not try a different testing kit first to confirm if it is you or the meter. Good luck and keep positive.

Don't all yoghurts contain sugar in the form of lactose?

    Dawn phenomenon

Hi, if the dawn phenomenon/liver dump raises your BG what is the point of testing on getting up or before breakfast? I normally test as I am getting up (usually between 7 and 7:30) with readings between 100 and 150. A few times I have tested at 7ish at 105/115 and tested again at 8ish just...

    Morning testing

I test before I get out of bed (usually about 7 am). One thing I see from the comments that most people don't wash their hands before testing but in the 3 years I've been testing (I'm T2) I've always wiped the finger I use with alcohol on cotton wool, although my surgery nurse usually uses...

EU changes night-time hypos driving rule.

Did you actually read the article? Or are you another of those who only have to hear or read 'EU' and immediately hear or see something negative without bothering about what is said. The EU in this instance is doing something positive for diabetics and therefore are NOT discriminating AGAINST...

    Type 2 Confused and frustrated

Thanks Nosher, I think I may have been getting a bit paranoid and obsessed, but your info and advice have pulled me back from that. I'll try the things you've suggested and see what happens over the next few months. Thanks a lot, I appreciate it

    Type 2 Confused and frustrated

Thanks Nosher, I don't mind nosey if it's helpful ! (I am too but I like to call it being curious!). I'm eating the same as before, but less bread, pasta or rice. I'm very lucky weight-wise as I've never had a problem (about 5'11" and never more than 11 stones - currently 10st 8lbs). When...
