    Anger

I get bad tempered as well, and last year managed to completely destroy a friendship that had been very precious to me because I couldn't contain it. I don't know that the diabetes caused the anger, I was pretty irritable a lot of the time before that, but I do think that since I was diagnosed I...

    Glucorx

I am Type 2, just ran a search on the Forum to see if anyone was talking about this subject and found you here. My GP Practice has recently had this meter forced on them by the PCT for cost reasons, and I spoke to my GP this morning who has said other people have complained and the head of the...

    Blood Glucose Testing-Bad Advice

Well I've had another look and can't find any Hba1C test kits available in the UK that give you a result at home, you have to take the blood and send it off to a lab. The US kits are complete self test kits. Thanks for the link, Ken, but it seems to lead to a cholesterol kit, which wasn't what...

    Blood Glucose Testing-Bad Advice

Just had a quick look and it seems that there are kits available in the US but not here. I guess there's not that much call for them here when you can get it done on the NHS for free, in the US they have to pay around $150 to get it done, that would certainly motivate you to pay $25 to get a kit...

Allergy drugs may fight diabetes, obesity

Do we know if these are available over the counter in the Uk? I had a bit of a look in Boots today and couldn't find anything that fitted the bill. What brand names should be looked for, and would they be ok to take without checking it out with a doctor first?

    Blood Glucose Testing-Bad Advice

Is there any way of testing your own Hba1C at home? I assume not, but thought I'd ask anyway.

    one minute microwave bread

I make scones from carbalose which are not at all bad, and taste pretty much like the real thing with a tiny smear of low sugar strawberry jam and a big heap of clotted cream. yum

    I've been an idiot!

I hate to disagree with the Mod, but my feeling is that if you post stuff on a public message board, it's open to comment by other people and much as the poster is entitled to their point of view, other people are entitled to take exception to it. If you can't handle the consequences, don't pipe...

    I've been an idiot!

Wow you must be really strict if you regard 8.2 as being off the range! That's normal after dinner BS to me, I'd have to get to about 12 to be calling myself an idiot. :D

    What is everyone eating?

Breakfast today was a mushroom omelette made with eggs from my own chickies. Quite often have the yoghurt fruit and nut option for breakfast, as I used to love my breakfast cereal. I have discovered a range on sale in Morrisons called Bakery on Main, which is about 12% carbs and I can tolerate a...

    New to Gliclazide

Thanks! I did find the low carbing pretty hard at first and felt cheesed off that the advice I was given to eat a 'balanced diet' wasn't doing the business, but then the challenge of getting good results kicked in, and I've found ways of eating low carb that I can live with, and am getting back...

To Low Carb or Not to Low carb

It does seem a bit like the Big Enders and Little Enders from Gulliver's Travels who went to war over which end of the egg should be opened first. Seems to me that the real 'enemy' is not the two factions on this forum, but a combination of the establishment who are so wedded to their...

    New to Gliclazide

Well, I just came back from my diabetic nurse who told me that my Hba1C has come down from 11.5  at diagnosis to 5.9, so hurrah! Success. I am going to drop one gliclazide on advice, so hopefully this will help in losing some weight.

    New to Gliclazide

NO TREATS!!??? Not sure I could keep that up for a fortnight. :D  Alternatively I could try asking my doctor for an alternative that does the same job and doesn't have the same weight control issues.

    Berries

I'm loving the berries too, just had a bowl of blueberries and raspberries with nuts and yoghurt. I bung a bit of cinnamon on it and half a spoon of sweetener. I was wondering what I'm going to do in the winter as I find the frozen berries really sharp, and in the mornings the sweetener does...

To Low Carb or Not to Low carb

Doc, it seemed to me from reading your post that you had found some research showing that low carb diets have proven long term ill effects, and I was just wondering as someone who is new to diabetes and not medically trained whether you thought these long term ill effects were more/less damaging...

    New to Gliclazide

Hard to say really as I don't make a habit of counting them, just cutting out the obvious ones like bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, sugar. These are pretty much completely off, bar the odd new potato of an evening, and sometimes some of the low carb bread and pasta you can get online. I could do...

    New to Gliclazide

I've been on glic since March and although I haven't gained any weight, I have been low carbing and not lost much weight, only about three or four pounds, and struggle to keep that off sometimes. It's very frustrating as I'm not eating anything like as much as I did before diagnosis and should...

To Low Carb or Not to Low carb

Dr H, I suppose the crux of the argument is this. Which is more harmful over the long term, the effects of high blood sugar, or the effects of lack of carbohydrate in the diet? I am on metformin and gliclazide, and even so there is no way I can keep my blood sugars under control without...

    Breakfast cereals

I can't seem to touch cereal either, which I find really difficult as it used to be my main breakfast before. I can't stand eggs every day, so I have come up with a cereal alternative of greek yoghurt with a sprinkling of mixed nuts (flaked almonds, ground almonds and walnuts) with a little...
