Hi
hat berries are safe to eat? Strawberries and raspberries are not true berries are they?
Would plain yoghurt and berries and nuts be a good breakfast? I also like my boiled egg and brown toast comments on that please. Tried low carbing then strayed and found my tests were higher so am going to go back to low carbing.

Hi Sue,

All berries are safe for diabetics and you are correct about strawbs and raspbs not being true berries in the botanical sense. The same applies to blackberries, loganberries and blueberries.

Would plain yoghurt and berries and nuts be a good breakfast?
As long as the yoghurt doesn't have a high sugar content then that would be an excellent and very nutritious choice.

The egg has negligible carbs so the bread is the problem. I single slice of a normal wholemeal bread is about 16g, and if that is all the carbs your breakfast will contain then most people would be ok on that. If even that amount spikes your BS then you could try a slice of Nimble or Weightwatchers bread instead. Both are around 9g per slice.

On the subject of berries .......... obviously at the moment they are plentyful and not too expensive to purchase. But for autumn/winter I have found Sainsbury frozen "Summerberries" to be wonderful!! 500g bag is merely £2.25 and I am sure other supermarkets have similar proudcts if you have a look.

I have about 50g with single Elmlea for dessert and add 50g fresh rashberries or other fresh berries, if I am greedy or the sweet tooth kicks in! Yhmmmmy.........

Oh and lots of free wild berries will be around soon too ............... living near woodlands, I am certainly going to get my fill of free berries!!

The egg and toast works great for me... i just have two eggs and one toast.

Plain yoghurt is fine, but keep an eye on the flavoured ones. Even the so-called 'healthy- ones can contain stupid amounts of fat / sugar.
I love strawberries, granola, and yoghurt. Just a little bit of granola to give it a crunch. Feels like i'm actually eating something.
Remember, you have to keep the diet stable. If there is something you really love to eat, try to find a way of incorportaing it into your diet. That is far preferable than having 'stray's that lead to high BSL.

Good Luck :)

Watch that Elmlea. It's not cream and contains hygrogenated fat.

Libby (re the Elmlea) I agree 200%
it's that fat phobia again. It's so enrenched it will take a battalion of JCBs to dig it out. It's hard to get people to understand that food made in a chemistry lab isn't good for them. look at how many think Margarine is "healthier" than butter

Not in my case!! I just prefer the taste over regular cream, that's all!

Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries with a slice of fresh pineapple ,a tablespoon of cream fraiche and double cream!!

I'm loving the berries too, just had a bowl of blueberries and raspberries with nuts and yoghurt. I bung a bit of cinnamon on it and half a spoon of sweetener.

I was wondering what I'm going to do in the winter as I find the frozen berries really sharp, and in the mornings the sweetener does make me spike a bit. Have to go easy on it.

Frozen berries go in oatmeal, with a bit of cream or cinnamon sugar.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

May I suggest that you buy up the cheap fresh fruit now and freeze them in self-made mixtures to suit? Neighbour just come back from a farmshop with 2kg of fresh berries he got for £5!! And they are going back for more later in the week - they mix their own lb bags (actually containers) to suit their taste. Neat idea which I have copied with some of the fresh rashberries on offer at the moment - easy to take out 50g for dessert or breakfast.

PS. Actually drove to Lidl to get the much raved about Greek Yogurt only to find it is out of stock and not expected back until later in the week!! arggh!!! Will try Monday when back in town.

Alice,

What a good idea about freezing your own berries - I'm off to Morrisons soon so will buy extra berries and freeze them (not sure about strawberries though 'cos they don't freeze too well).

Hope you get your yoghurt!

Rita

Regarding yoghurt, I have a real taste for Muller Lights! The cherry ones are ~ 13g carbs and they're no-added sugar blah blah. What do you reckon? Thumbs up or thumbs down?

I eat those too - I tend to split one pot into two portions and add a few fresh berries. Great dessert for lunch or dinner.

Depends on how your diet is, I suppose - but with the carbs I take each day, I can easily fit in 1/2 pot at lunch time even with a bit of fruit. AND more importantly, if you really like them, then it is worth "making" room for it in your diet, if you can.
