    Week-long fast every 3 months?

Coincidentally, I am embarking on something similar. I am T2 since 2009, diet only control. I have finally reached my goal weight. I won't bore you with the whole saga, but I got the last 10 pounds off finally by doing 2 weeks of VLCD - 800-ish calories a day - followed by a "rest" week where I...

    Weight gain with kefir?

Thanks Krystyna, that's interesting. I was wondering whether it was all the extra protein in the kefir that was doing the damage as there shouldn't be much sugar left

    Weight gain with kefir?

I started making my own kefir last year, in an effort to improve my gut health. After some early mishaps, I got a good process going and have been drinking about 100ml every morning for the last 25 weeks. However, over the same period both my weight and my A1c have gradually crept up despite...

    Blood testing advice

Yes, funny isn't it. My Diabetes Nurse told me on diagnosis that T2s don't need to test but I went out & bought a meter anyway. Each HBA1C she says "you're doing so well just on diet & exercise - how do you do it?"

    Sugar-free Sloe Gin?

I haven't tested with it, I must admit. Although I suspect the high level of alcohol would slow down the sugar absorbtion considerably, I've had unexpected highs from drinking ouzo in the past, so I would treat with caution!

    Sugar-free Sloe Gin?

Thanks again - I'll let you know how it goes. I don't suppose it will last long in our house either....... :)

    Sugar-free Sloe Gin?

Brilliant - thanks! I've got some Splenda. Do you remember what proportion of Splenda to sloes you normally use? Brill

    Sugar-free Sloe Gin?

I went foraging at the weekend and came back with 3 pounds of sloes to make sloe gin. I tried some last Christmas and was very taken with it, so thought I'd give it a go. All the recipes I've seen are very high in sugar (as much as 1:1 sugar to sloes) so I though I would experiment with some of...

    T2 and snack before bed

I get the same and I wondered if it was because I have normally been up and about for about 10 minutes before I manage to test. I will try and test in bed and see if it makes any difference. I almost never snack after tea; if I do and it doesn't involve alcohol, my BG is about 6.5-7, if I've had...

What was your fasting blood glucose? (with some chat)

6 on the nose. I prefer to be nearer 5; don't know what happened yesterday, I did loads of exercise!

    Mince Suggestions / Cheese Question

Instead of sugar, I put a couple of squares of dark chocolate or a teaspoon of cocoa powder in my meat & tomato sauces. It takes off the acidity and adds a bit of richness. It also improves the colour.

    The Demon Drink!

Yes, I find a Gin and slimline nightcap reduces my morning BG result nicely! One word of warning though, as you live in Greece. My hubby bought me a bottle of ouzo (Pilavas, my favourite!) for my birthday and after a couple of those my BG was up to 9 the next day. Looked it up (...

    Type 1 -low carb,what about fat/insulin?

I'm not an expert, and I'm type 2, but controlling it with a low-ish carb diet plus exercise. I couldn't give up fruit either, but they are not all equal - the answer is to try a portion and then test. I found I couldn't eat pineapple, grapes or watermelon (which I love) without a big spike...

    Flu jab 2010/2011

Re: Flu jab 2010. Just had mine this morning - no problems yet.... Before I was diagnosed I often used to pay to get a flu jab if I could, as I always got it every winter, sometimes twice. I blame my children who bring home every virus going..... Of course, they bounce back from it quickly...

Ok, I'm new and I'm badly missing chocolate!

You can get "no added sugar" chocolates, and some of them taste really good (the Cavalier ones for example) but they all tend to give you the runs.... In fact, really good quality dark chocolate, the 70% cocoa solids stuff, hasn't got an awful lot of sugar in anyway, so I treat myself to one...

    Ideas on healthy snacks

Hi - I snack on Almonds, which are supposed to be really good for you, are filling and don't affect my BG at least. They are a bit fatty though, so if you are trying to lose weight (like I am) you have to go easy on them.
