    Freestyle Optium Neo

I took a free upgrade to the optium neo from an optium xceed but carried on using my xceed until it broke. I stupidly didn't contact Freestyle about the broken xceed but just went straight on to using the neo. I hate it. It errors on me at least 2 or 3 times a week, usually halfway through the...

Canula location...how far is too far?

It's probably because it's a new site. I'd give it a day and see if it calms down, providing insulin delivery is ok. I had this when I first used my arms but they're ok now. I often use my side, mainly because my stomach is shot to pieces.

    1.8mmol/L Hypo

I was digging at the allotment at the weekend and my husband asked if I was okay (this is usually a sign there is something wrong). Apparently I was just stood there staring at nothing. When I tried to answer him I couldn't get the words out. Tested: 1.9. Had obviously got to the point where I'd...

    Pump help!!

You'll soon learn what works best for you. When I first started on my pump I religiously changed my set every 3 days and only changed the cartridge when it was empty, which may have been on day 4 or 5. I have learnt now how much insulin I generally use in a 3 day period and only draw up that...

    Disconnecting from pump for swimming

I'm going on holiday next week. I'm hoping for sunshine, warmth, peace and quiet, kids happily playing, birds singing, blue skies. Who am I kidding, we're forecast cloud, kids have never happily played together in their lives, and I expect the peace and quiet will be deafened by the main road...

Not a great start to the day

Gosh, been there done that. Hope you manage to get things sorted as the day goes on. Before going on a pump I used to sometimes do my evening levemir injection before bed and then wonder if I'd used the correct pen. It used to worry me sick. The not knowing is horrible. Test test test...

How many test strips do you use a month?

On average I do 8-10 tests per day as I'm also on a pump. If questioned by my gp I would remind them that this is completely justified (i.e. having to test before & after eating, before driving, basal testing etc etc etc). If enough test strips aren't prescribed then the cost of the pump...

Type 1 rules we accidentally break :/

Insulin can be kept out of the fridge for up to 4 weeks before it is spoiled (providing it's not exposed to extreme temps). I always keep the one I'm using at room temp and all the others in the fridge.

Why is overnight fasting necessary for a blood test?

I agree with Spiker - I only ever have hypos on the days where I eat more carbs. On days where I strictly limit my carbs my bg is steady all day.

    Now the hard work begins

If you're anything like me you'll be amazed at the improved control it gives you and the ability to make minor adjustments for massive improvements. Don't expect miracles overnight, but if you put in all the hard work now by carb counting correctly and testing frequently your pump will work...

Why is overnight fasting necessary for a blood test?

I may have completely misunderstood your point but my understanding is that your liver will only dump glucose if your blood sugar falls too low, regardless of whether this is during the day or night. You might be referring to the dawn phenomenon whereby your body dumps glucose ready for activity...

What happened to the Bank Holiday??

Usually the lack of resistance on a pen tells you something is wrong. Did you have no indication at all?

    First time for everything

It had to happen sooner or later. Had breakfast this morning and got in the car to go to work and when I was about half way there I realised I'd forgotten to bolus for my breakfast. Had checked my bg and counted my carbs, just forgot to plug it all into my pump. Eejit!!! By the time I put it all...

    Hypo awareness

It is common for you to lose awareness while pregnant - test lots just to be on the safe side. I lost mine from about 2 months in each of my pregnancies but it came back afterwards.

How long does it take to recover from a hypo

The sheer exhaustion that I experience after a bad hypo lasts for hours and, as Spiker said, I usually need to sleep before I feel any better. A mild hypo is very different though and the effects only last until by bg rises again. A night hypo is a whole different story - I can be out of action...

    Standard bolus/ multiwave bolus..

As Spiker said it is useful for high fat meals especially things like pizza (which impacts my bg even 12 hours later - a big no no for me). I've also used it when having a drink on an evening as this is generally over a prolonged period of time. You do have to play with the timings a bit though...

How the DOC helped me (after 49yrs of T1)

I too can remember being made to have a hypo before being allowed home from hospital as an 8 year old. I didn't get the sweats or anything, just kept laughing at everything the nurse said. My parents said to her "Is this all it is? But she laughs all the time anyway. How will we know?!?!?!" I...

How the DOC helped me (after 49yrs of T1)

Hi Lisbet, I agree totally with everything you've touched on. I've been T1 for 30 years and neither my parents nor me had any sort of instruction on how to count carbs except for a poster that the clinic gave my mum with about 15 different foods on it, giving their 'exchange' value. My mum took...

    Bad hypo

@Hooked, if you compare Lucozade Sport with normal Lucozade it has much lower carbs. Per 100ml normal lucozade has 17.2g carbs (of which sugars 8.7g but all of the 17.2g is glucose based), and lucozade sport has 6.4g carbs (of which sugars 3.5g). That's a massive difference.

    Whats your weirdest phobia?

Don't know if you'd say it was a phobia but I cannot stand the sound of people eating. I zone in on it at mealtimes etc and it's all I can hear. Hate it hate it hate it.
