Ketones, potential illness and low carb diet

Having had experience of high ketones when very ill last year, the medical profession only worry at 4 and above. As soon as mine dipped below they were unconcerned.

    Frequency of Tresiba dose adjustment?

I find Tresiba to be much less effective after 4 weeks. I only use small amounts so usually dump about 1/3. Seems wasteful, but I know my levels will start creeping up.

Car insurance cancelled after switch to insulin

Well they can do what they want. Legal doesn’t come into it. We are with Saga. They are not interested in 3 year licenses, to be fair many of their clientele will be on them. They were not bothered about me being Type 1.

    Type 1'stars R Us

Crikey @Marie 2 that is what you call a plate. Glad you are progressing. Have you been able to go diving yet?

I can’t see the numbers on the dial

I just count the clicks. Each click on mine being a half unit. But to be fair I rarely dial in an amount over 10. I can imagine counting 30+ clicks would be a bit much.

I need to reduce my Tresiba (again!), and it's a pain in the proverbial. And nighttime hypos.

@Antje77 I would be inclined to set your alarm at high 4s until you are more stable. Always have mine set at 4.9. If it goes in the night I eat one jelly baby and turn over. A nudge just keeps me level.

    Adhesive trouble swimming laps

I use one for the Libre off Amazon. A total cover that doesn’t stick to the middle. See through. Just googled for Dexcom and there is a variety. I wear one 24/7 as i too swim laps regularly for about a mile. All that bashing your arm over needs a good cover. Never had one come off yet. I usually...

What is the maximum time as a matter of interest @Fairygodmother?

    Medical Exemption - Prescriptions Charge

@Mark the Spark I suspect that you started with diabetes as a child, when you were eligible for free prescriptions. Personally I believe you should have received a letter when you turned 18 alerting you to the new adult requirement. Without that how would you know. Diagnosed at 54, the hospital...

Type 2 Diabetics wake up at 3:00 am ?

Yes I do. But also often up at 1 and 5 as well. Came on in older age.

    Moving area!

Just to say @Brookemurph as a type 1 you are eligible for a sensor wherever you are in the country. Make sure all your medication is up to date and well stocked before you move. This will give you time to register with a new GP. When I moved 9 years ago it was all straight forward and quick. In...

Hybrid closed loop system eligibility criteria

If everyone was eligible it would be a mad free for all and there would still be disappointed people. It’s a bit like Libre, wait and it will happen eventually. If we don’t fit the criteria we must be doing ok. So that is a positive in my opinion. Right at the front of the queue should be...

    ‘Stop Eating After 7pm’ Challenge

We too are retired and eat breakfast and then lunch about 2pm. Husband has a snack later, but I as a type 1 only eat if a little low. So I last about 15 hours. I am not low carb but watch the carb intake. I am not hungry and on 3 days a week swim 70 lengths before my breakfast.

    Carb counting Apps

Have to admit in 10 years I’ve not used anything. Just done the maths, recorded on a bit of paper totted up totals and injected accordingly. Most items have carbs per 100 on the back. For finding out unknown items I tend to ask Alexa.

how long before a meal do you bolus

The point is, does that work for you? It certainly wouldn’t for me. But we are all different. There are no hard and fast rules it is about finding out what works.

    Dose timing advice

@ATB123 it is all indeed a very big learning curve. I think the biggest one is accepting that it is due to each individual to learn about their own bodies and react accordingly. Medical professionals can advise, but they are advising 100s of people and we are individuals. My brother is also a...

How to Scan a Libre on an Android Phone?

The scan icon on an iPhone is indeed needed to activate a gap filling scan. It is also used for scanning insulin pens.

    Libre 2 sensor and testing

I rarely test. Libre is relatively accurate for me and I trust it. I would test in the middle of the night if high alarm goes off. I then can inject the correct amount. In December I was ill and ketone testing was invaluable. However, they are expensive and my Gp would have something to say if I...

It is an amazing achievement, @barbarapreston should be a huge inspiration to all. Newly diagnosed and even those well into their diagnoses. Well done!
