New and would like to talk to others with diabetes.

Hello there, bad-jojo, I'm a new boy too but I was lucky. My wife is a bully and understands the concepts of a reduced carb diet thoroughly. Just as well because, to make life more interesting for me, I now live in France and their idea of a diabetes diet also came out of the ark. As well...

    The "winter" phenomenon

Thanks everyone. Yep, it's confirmed - when it comes to diabetes, nothing is cut and dried and every single one of us has their own special feature. Even after only two months I've found so many different things screw up my readings - be it temperature, infection, exercise, worry - you name...

Should 'diabetic' food be better regulated?

I agree 100% with Etty. Better lables - yes - but lose the unnecessary and emotive "Specially for Diabetics" nonsense. John

    The "winter" phenomenon

Now be fair, I have already confessed to my sin of almost jumping to conclusions based on limited data. However, unlike some Chemical (sorry I was going to say Pharmaceutical, but given your confession of being a Chemist - I couldn't resist it! ) Companies, I don't propose to publish...

    Need some help

Here in France we use a variation of mg/DL - but the French have to be different. So for me, 155 would be presented as 1.55 g/L. Anyway, as cuglia says, 155 is a bit high but not wildly so - the published "ideal" is 140 (about 7.7mmol/L) but one isolated reading isn't something to worry too...

Should 'diabetic' food be better regulated?

I think the development of "diabetic" foodstuffs harks back to the same game as "low fat". By playing with a "bogey man" - in one case fat, in this case sugar, the food manufacturers can charge premium prices for sub standard goods. I'm just waiting to find my first sample of "99% sugar free...

    The "winter" phenomenon

An interesting mix of views. Thanks everyone. The physicist in me thought that the hypothesis was an elegent one, but the human body is amazingly adaptable to its environment, so Daisy's view seemed reasonable too. My other factor is that I'm a very new boy and the optimist in me wondered...

    The "winter" phenomenon

Thanks for the response Daisy, but that was my point. My diet hadn't changed, nor the amount of exercise I'd taken but the blood sugar figure was down a few points on the previous week. The only thing that seemed to have changed was the temperature. As someone who had studied physics (many...

    The "winter" phenomenon

The dawn phenomenon is a known real effect. I'm beginning to think that there is also a "winter" phenomenon. Can anyone comment on whether, like me, they've noticed a change in blood sugar (a reduction) when the weather turns colder (all other things being equal). As a new boy, the wife and...

What type of diabetic am I?

I'm 63 and have weighed around 80 kg for the last 30 or so years. A bit of a beer gut and at 5ft 10 on the high side of normal weight but not really overweight. My wife and I retired to France in 2004 and until last month we didn't even know the name of the local doctor - much to the surprise...
