When is your Type 1 child old enough to stay home alone???

Re: When is your Type 1 child old enough to stay home alone? Hello Justine I find this quite difficult. My son was diagnosed aged 13 when he was just getting some independence, and it felt like we were really going backwards. I didn't want him to be on his own at all. 18 months down the line...

    One Monitor or Two ?

Hello Just wanted to chime in that the Optium Xceed does have the ability to download data. Abbott diabetes care, who make the meter, will send you a special cable for free and a disc for the software (it's called CoPilot). You just plug the cable in your computer, stick the other end in the...

    Hi and what a shock

Hello Angie. I'm the mum of a T1 teenage boy, diagnosed aged 13 a year ago. We too were absolutely reeling for a month or two, but it does get better. There's so much information to take in so it is very overwhelming at first ... Diabetic teams are usually really good at drip feeding the info so...

    Concerned Grandma

I agree with Ladybird that you need some answers here. But for what it's worth, I thought I'd chip in that my son was in hospital a year before diagnosis on another matter, and had a high blood sugar (they didn't tell me what the level was, just that it was high). Told to take him to the GP the...

    can I do this?

What an awful start for you all - I'm so sorry. Hopefully by now things have calmed down. It will get better! You should be getting lots of support from your care team at this stage, so if you're not, don't be afraid to shout for it.

    still in denial

Shame the dr didn't give a number target in a way, as testing 4 times is only useful if she then does something in response to get her sugars down. Another thing that might help is getting her to talk to another person with T1? In the early days my nephew dug out a friend of his, just started...

    still in denial

Hello, mum to a 14 year-old T1 here. I saw your post on the other thread, and wondered if you can make the pump the focus for your duaghter? She says she wants one, but the consultant says her levels are not good enough ... maybe that will be the carrot? I wonder if the consultant can be...

    Newbie in honeymoon...

You could ask about basal/bolus too, as you just eat what you like then and give yourself enough insulin to cover the carbs. It involves working out a carb:insulin ratio but your DN must have done some sums to work out your current dose, so that shouldn't be a problem.

    honeymoon period

My son was diagnosed back in March and like you went down to almost no insulin. Gradually levels have come back up and now he's on 10 lantus and ratio 1:10 for Novorapid. The half unit pen was definitely useful - could have done with one for lantus too but I don't think they're available? The...

could it be diabetes? advice please

If the GP didn't test his blood sugar again, he really should have, so I'd press for that. He could ask for a fasting blood sugar test too, which might give a more definitive answer. Hope he gets on OK

    Newly diagnosed

Hello ... sorry about your daughter. My son was diagnosed back in the spring (also when he was 13) and it was hard for everyone ... I think I went into a kind of bereavement stage for a bit after the shock, so my heart goes out to you! But it will get easier as you come to terms with everything...

    another newbi and worried.

Hello Gingertess I'm a diabetic's mum too! Sympathies about all the worry. Does your daughter live with you? Tricky one for you as she's her own boss now ... When you say your daughter never feels well that's a worry, she shouldn't be feeling ill all the time unless something is wrong. Maybe she...

    Rapid change in control

Hi David Well done on the reduction of HbA1C. I'm sorry about the retinopathy but really hope you get some more detail soon and that it reassures you. I understand that it's not necessary to treat background retinopathy actively (ie. you won't need laser treatment or anything like that). You...

    mid-morning/lunchtime highs

Good to hear things are getting on track. Getting the glargine right does seem to be the key to good control for my son (14). He is gradually coming out of his honeymoon and needing to take more Lantus at night. We're wondering whether he needs a different dose for the weekend too, as he's much...
