Hello everyone. I have joined today hoping to get some advice or guidence for my Daughter and Grandson.. Lincoln is 3 and a half years old.. He was a very sick baby right after birth for the first 4 months finally it was put down to Lactose intolerance.. He eats a pretty average diet now with all the family. Last year in May he wet the bed (out of the ordinary) the next day I had a very hard time trying to wake him, carried him in to the doctor still sleeping, was sent for blood test then home, Now it is 3 in the afternoon, my daughter said that she is taking him to the hospital she is worried sick about him. 5pm the doctors office rings and said for his mum to get him straight to hospital his sugar levels are a 14.9, well she is already there. I call with this info to her, by now he is more alert and his finger pricks are showing normal levels, he was kept in and monitored for the night and discharged the next morning saying the blood place must of made a mistake and said it is probable behaviour problems because of the new baby in the family. (Not happy about that) anyway all happy Lincoln is back to his happy self. I bought my daughter a glucose meter incase it happened again.. Well last week all these months later he wet the bed next day did not want to wake up, fasting sugar was 2.3 called the doc he said give a sweet drink, we did he had a couple of vomits as well. Half hour later levels up to a 4, so good they are coming up, he is still sleeping test again at 11am they are 8.7 ok so now we are of to the Doc get there they are 8.9. He ordered a ultra sound looking for a Insulinoma, had never heard of it til then. GOOD news he is clear off any masses. Next time doc will do more blood and urine test. My question is is it possible he has early onset diabeties or prediabetic. His levels vary from 3 to 9 generally in a day, fasting one this morning was 6.8 which i thought was a little high for fasting, should we get another opinion. He is a active little boy then all off a sudden he is down.. Please help with any sort of information. Kind regards Karen :wave:

Obviously we are not medics here so can't tell you for definite one way or another, that has to come from a health care professional.
What I would say (from one grandma to another :wink: ) is that I would be pushing for a bit more attention than the wee fella is getting and some proper tests.
I'm not an expert and maybe one of the mums with youngsters would be able to advise better but to me those levels look decidedly dodgy and need to be investigated properly. Also mum's and grandma's instinct is a powerful thing, you know what Lincoln is like normally and to just put these changes down to behavioural issues seems a bit unfair.
I would be pressing for immediate testing and if this is refused, given his age and background, I would be asking for a second opinion.

I agree with Ladybird that you need some answers here. But for what it's worth, I thought I'd chip in that my son was in hospital a year before diagnosis on another matter, and had a high blood sugar (they didn't tell me what the level was, just that it was high). Told to take him to the GP the next day for a follow up test, and it was back to normal. He may also have had a hypo a few months before diagnosis too, although we don't know for sure. He felt faint in games, went cold and shaky, and then went to sleep in the medical room for an hour or so before feeling fine again. It's good that you're so vigilant. I hope your grandson turns out to be fine.
Thankyou very much, yes we are going to push for a 2nd opinion, My daughter has just called with his levels this morning and they are fasting ones at 7.8 and he wet the bed again, but seems normal, so its called hypo from what i can gather on here, is that when he gets sleepy and hard to wake up? This is not what we want for the little man just as its not what you all wanted. We want to know what is wrong so he can be treated. And if he is a diabetic we have alot of learning to do so we can manage and teach him to manage it. Will def get another opinion on Monday.. Thankyou.. Lincoln when he is sleepy he is all sweaty and clammy and very pale, then he just gets better on his own..

It is very scary when kids are sick. They can't really tell you how they are feeling and can go from ok to really ill in a short amount of time. You can get blood tests that will indicate if your grandchild is heading towards diabetes but it doesn't sound like you would be able to do much in the way of treatment at this stage, if it was the case, as blood sugar levels are still normal. I hope you find some answers if the symptoms keep persisting.
