    NHS diet does it again.

I thought I'd take a look at the new Sainsburys that opened up near me yesterday. Whilst waiting at the checkout I noticed a number of health related leaflets. As they had one on diabetes I thought I'd have a quick read and lo and behold there was the nice coloured pie chart and a long...

Just diagnosed and I am hungry for fruit

Hi Jay, It was only through testing that I could determine which fruit I could eat. I'm fine with berries and plums (not too ripe) but that's about it for me. Sweet potato is okay for me too, it has no impact on my levels. The same for squash as well - my favourite side order is now diced...

    Breakfast

Hi, Does your work have a canteen or is there a local cafe? I have a two hour commute in the mornings so tend to get into work a little early and eat there. I'm not veggie, but will normally have mushrooms, egg, tomato (plus a bit of bacon or a sausage :) ) It normally works out around...

Can't get my BS down no matter how i try

Good news! I used to really love cereal, I now only have a very small bowl as a treat occasionally after dinner (when my Gliclazide has kicked in...)

Can't get my BS down no matter how i try

Hi, I'm sure one of the moderators will be on shortly to provide the links normally provided to people recently diagnosed, but I can offer some advice from my experience. When I was diagnosed earlier this year, I tried and tested a whole variety of cereals, but unfortunately all of them made...

    Relevance of age to diabetes??

That comment is word for word what my doctor said to me  I had just turned 36 and was put straight on Metformin, with Gliclazide a few weeks later. I took it to mean that there were many years ahead for me to get some nasty complications

    cinnamon ??

It's not very scientific, but sometimes I'll have a latte from the coffee shop at work and if I put cinnamon on the top, the increase in BG is reduced. I have the same thing to eat for breakfast and lunch each day (very sad!) so I'm pretty sure it's the cinnamon making a difference...

    Hypoglycemia

Hi I had hypos before I was diagnosed, including one where I collapsed in Sainsburys and got rushed to hospital  The doctors ran a variety of tests but no cause was ever identified. In retrospect I think I was experiencing episodes of reactive hypoglycaemia - it probably wasn't picked...

help with my glucose tollerance test results please

Re: severe reactive hypoglycemia please help I would try a couple of days without breakfast cereal as Etty has suggested. If I have porridge (or any type of cereal :( ) I will spike up to the high teens then drop into the 3s within an hour. I've given up on cereals for breakfast now and...

    Glicacide timing

I take my Glic (80mg) and Met (500mg) 1/2 an hour before breakfast then again 1/2 hour before dinner. I experimented with splitting the breakfast dose in two and having 1/2 at lunch but it didn't seem to make any difference so I went back to am/pm.

    Just before you were diagnosed????

Hi, My symptoms came on really quickly - from first indications to diagnosis in about a month. I lost about a stone in weight and had very blurred vision, but the main thing I recall is the absolute desperate thirst. I was drinking 3-4 cans of coke (full sugar!) plus 2-3 big bottles of water...

Can anyone tell me why my toes are behaving strangely?

Strangely, a couple of days after I responded to this thread, my toe cramps are now back! As my control is now not too bad (rarely over 8), I'm thinking it may be due to the colder weather...

Can anyone tell me why my toes are behaving strangely?

I'm not sure if this helps, but I had this happen a lot just before I was diagnosed. It used to really freak me out!! My BG levels were over 20 at the time but the problem disappeared once I got into single digits. Have you been able to test your BG when your toes are in spasm? It may be...

Levels now lower but too low each day

Hi John, I'm pretty similar to you - diagnosed in May with readings over 20. I'm on 500mg metformin and 160mg gliclazide and I too tend to go a bit low mid to late afternoon. I've found that a portion of salted popcorn or a couple of crackers normally get me back on track. I did experiment...

    Bad food day

Yep, same with me. I'm on metformin but don't normally have any of the 'usual' stomach problems, unless I have something carby...

    Metformin tummy trouble

I had real trouble with the Metformin at the beginning, but now I take it (with Gliclizide) 1/2 hour before eating. I also snack on nuts and seeds for extra fibre. I know this is contrary to most recommendations but I don't have any problems at all now. In fact I had IBS before diagnosis and...

    Dry mouth advice

Hi, I have a constant supply of sugar free mints - Smints or Extra are best, sugar free Polos don't seem to work for some reason... When I have a meeting at work, I have to have a pack of mints to hand or my voice goes all croaky.

Vitamin B3 - Niacin - Impact on BG levels

Hi Ian/Doug, Many thanks for your replies. After posting my initial comment I stopped taking the supplement and have seen a slight improvement in my BG levels. According to Google, metformin is linked to Vitamin B12 deficiency so that's why I started taking the supplement. I may see if I can...

Vitamin B3 - Niacin - Impact on BG levels

Hi all, I've been taking vitamin B complex after reading that metformin could reduce the levels of some vitamins. My BG levels have dropped down since diagnosis and average 6-8 2 hrs after eating - still some work to do... Well today I was in a rush and didn't take my vit B pill and lo and...

    highs still on metformin

Hi, I'm certainly not an expert (only diagnosed in May), but for me carbs in the morning are a complete no-no. I've tried all combinations (porridge, weetabix, granola) all with water and just sweetener, but they still make me spike. At lunch I can have a small portion of carbs i.e. one...
