    Captain’s Log: Newcastle Diet Diary

Haha that’s exactly what I thought as I added cream to my chicken yesterday! I’m also eating a rainbow of veg as my OH is trying to improve their bowel health (long story and multiple operations). Thanks for being there for me during my ND phase, I truly your time and input.

    Captain’s Log: Newcastle Diet Diary

Sadly I’m done with the ND. Yesterday I was back to migraines again and back to GP for more blood tests. My B12 levels are too high and have been for 4 months (why did they only tell me this yesterday?!) Anyway, I’ve transitioned early onto a low carb diet and upped my calories. I’m “eating...

    Captain’s Log: Newcastle Diet Diary

Last week was pretty much a write off as my migraines didn’t improve. Went in to see GP on Thursday and had a blood test. No infection, just good old fashioned cold. I’ve pretty much been in bed and not eating more than a few sips of soup. Felt human on Sunday so I went for a gentle walk...

    Captain’s Log: Newcastle Diet Diary

I’ve been lax updating! Newcastle Diet is going well, I’ve been consistently under 800 calories a day and back to energetic after my period. @AloeSvea I’ve been experimenting with texture my salads and really enjoying the difference by mixing up cubing, grating, dicing etc. Mushrooms are also a...

Today’s major faux pas - rushing out at 4am for a day trip to Paris. Forgot my testing kit *sigh* Then was too busy to grab a bite! On my way home now, will make sure I put my backup test kit in my bag in future. *doh!*

    Captain’s Log: Newcastle Diet Diary

Re-reading my entries, I can see week 2 of 8 has been more challenging than memory serves. I averaged around 900 calories a day but really struggled with fatigue. Food has been salads and broths, which have been super simple to make with knorr stock pots. Shakes have been relegated to...

    Captain’s Log: Newcastle Diet Diary

@ringi @AloeSvea she didn’t really explain her reasoning, so I’ll be taking the literature in with me next time I see her. I don’t doubt I’d slowly lose weight on 1,500 calories but I’d have to increase my activity a lot. My main concern is I tried this over summer and ended up with colds every...

    Captain’s Log: Newcastle Diet Diary

Something I forgot to add - last week, I bumped into my diabetic nurse while having a med review. She reviewed my weight, meal and BG readings. She's cautiously supportive but wants me to consider raising my calories to 1,500 per day.

You too @AloeSvea! In some ways I can't wait to be post-menopausal too but it's a while off and will no doubt present it's own challenges. In the meantime, I'm grateful that years of poor control haven't caused too much damage. I'm finding the best thing is to have a warm drink and if I'm...

    Captain’s Log: Newcastle Diet Diary

Hi @AloeSvea, yes I’m 2 weeks off halfway and seeing really good BG which keeps me going. How are you finding it overall? My hunger seems more cycle related right now, I’ll know in the next couple of weeks if that’s the case. This is usually my eat everything in sight week!

Two-year-old pricked by diabetes lancet at Wetherspoon pub

I’ll ask today but have been fobbed off in the past.

I ended up making mushroom soup with vegetable stock. Cravings have settled down overnight.

    Captain’s Log: Newcastle Diet Diary

Week 1 of 8 was challenging. Monday to Wednesday slightly above target of 800 calories but otherwise good. With travel and limited access to plain salads, I struggled to keep on track Thursday to Sunday. I could see my control of blood glucose slipping all the way through. I’m pleased that...

    Captain’s Log: Newcastle Diet Diary

Today’s soup is celery and cherry tomatoes with oregano, coriander and black pepper. Weighs in at 21cals and 2.2g carbs but no getting away from the slightly metallic tang of celery. Cooked on the hob and blitzed in the nutribullet, it made 2 portions - and used up my fresh veg before I travel.

    Thigh injection issues

I had a problem with my 4mm needles and lumps. The specialist nurse suggested 5mm needles and they’ve been fine since the switch.

    Captain’s Log: Newcastle Diet Diary

Day 3 started with really bad insomnia. Woke up just after midnight and struggled to get back to sleep. BG of 4.9 so topped up with a shake. BGs under 5 makes me physically uncomfortable, so I aim for 5-6. Yesterday was really busy and the week will get busier with travel and evening work...

    Captain’s Log: Newcastle Diet Diary

Day 2 of Newcastle here. I’ve been restricting carbs gradually for 14 days beforehand to prep and provide evidence for negotiating lower insulin. So far, so good. It will get tougher, so I’m preparing for that.

    Captain’s Log: Newcastle Diet Diary

Yesterday was pea and spinach soup with veg stock, parsley, garlic, a touch of curry and lots of black pepper. All cooked from frozen in the Instant Pot (10 mins on pressure cooker). OH declared it delicious. It’s quick to make, could probably do it in the microwave, and convenient to use...
