    Managing exercise and insulin

You know, I felt this exact same way when my child was diagnosed 3 months ago. But with enough trial, I have found how much time of what activity will bring her down by how much. For example, we play a game where she jumps off the bed on to a cushion. I know if she does that for 10 minutes, she...

    Honeymoon period experiences

I am very surprised how they diagnosed you with Type 1 without an antibody test? I dont know if that is standard in the UK, but here in the US they send out antibody tests rightaway before diagnosing a T1 vs T2. My daugther was diagnosed september after they found IA-2A antibodies and slightly...

    Any T1Ds triggered by Covid?

Can you please keep us posted? My daughter was diagnosed with T1D diabetes same time as you. Same thing - COVID in april everything normal in march (Blood urine) and september DKA with 400 sugar. We are 3 months into diagnosis and she is needing very little insulin (1 unit for every 30g carbs)...

    iPort

Does anyone here have experience with iPort? For some reason, our insurance does not have it listed, and our doctors seem to think its not as reliable. I am not sure why they would say this, because technically its the same device as the pump uses.

    Marrying/ Long term dating a T1D person

First, diabetes of 2020 is not the same as diabetes of 2000, 1980, 1960. Today, many T1 diabetics are able to maintain normal sugar levels (even better than normal) because of advances in pumps, cgms, insulin, and nutrition. Let me answer your questions: 1. What are the real possibilities of...

    Antibody results

I prefer to avoid basal - we make sure she goes to bed around 140-150, and she wakes up at a nice 80-90. Do not want to mess that up unless necessary. Basal minimum unit is 1, and even with that we'd have to bring her up around 4 am.

    Antibody results

I was going through my 6yr old daughter's test results - she was recently diagosed T1. IA-2 Antibody: >120 H Glt Decarbx Ab 11.2 IU/mL IgA 193.0 mg/dL Normal Anti-IgA Ab ELISA Normal Insulin Ab (IAA) Normal Gliadin IgA 20 Units Weak Positive (upto 19 normal) Gliadin IgG 19 Units Normal TTG IgA...

    Tickleflex

I seem to have the same problem. Can you please advise what did you do ? Am I doing it wrong? My problem is my daughter only needs 0.5 to 1 unit, and even a little mistake means she is getting no insulin.

Whats a good number to go to bed at?

My daughter is a newly diagnosed T1d. At discharge they told us everytime we see her go below 130 overnight (check 2 times a night) bring her up with 15g carbs. She is now completely off the basal, (she went below 100 almost every night with basal), so we took it out slowly from 6 to 0. She has...

    Low Carb diet for children

Do you bolus at meals? Are you in a honeymoon phase? My daughter started with 6 units of basal. Kept going hypo everynight until we eliminated basal altogether. Humalog is on an as needed basis.

    Low Carb diet for children

Thank you all for your replies. Yes she is pretty much off insulin for the past week or so. We didnt do it by choice, she was going hypo every night when she was on insulin. When she eats around 30g of good carbs per meal she needs no insulin. She spikes to around 200 and then back down to 100...

    Low Carb diet for children

I had not, thank you for sharing - I did read a lot about type1grid and Dr Bernstien, so this is right up that alley and pretty much similar to what I read elsewhere. It is still fascinating to me that we are not able to conclusively, decisively, and authoritatively answer this simple...

    Low Carb diet for children

Not just that - post honeymoon with more carbs = more insulin = more chances of getting the dosage wrong = more hypo, hyper. during honeymoon = less carbs + little bit of insulin = less strain on the remaining islets = longer life for the islets. Basically, will 90g carbs (or slightly less...

    Low Carb diet for children

Thank you for your insight. I never really considered the psychological impact and irrational fear of carbs, as well as eating disorders. Thinking back, her diet is not all that different from what she had before. The only difference is I used to give her a lot of juice and chocolate milk thats...

    Low Carb diet for children

All of you have made excellent points - I am very glad you pointed me those two artciles the part that scares me is this. : "There is currently a lack of clinical studies into low-carbohydrate diets for children with diabetes. Low-carb and ketogenic diets appear to show no significant issues in...

    Low Carb diet for children

I know a lot of T1s maintain excellent sugar control by simply eating less carbs <30g a day. This is contrary to the advice we were given when leaving the hospital. We were told my 6 yr old T1 daughter needs 45-60 g carbs PER MEAL. Works out to around 130-180g carbs a day. We try to stick to...

    Hypo every night!

This is exactly what the endo did. We are now basal 0, insulin carb ration 60. So we only give her insulin for LARGE meals. She is in honeymoon so she went 3 days with no basal, no humalog. But today we went out to celebrate and she spiked up to 360 - probably because we underestimated the carbs...

    Insulin or Excercise?

And its 10 pm, she is already heading into hypo territory (90 and falling). Gave her OJ hopefully she will sleep through the night. Tomorrow no basal (endo said reduce basal until she no longer hypos). Just to clarify, the last insulin she had was this morning (14 hours ago) 1 unit basal. She...

    Insulin or Excercise?

So I have a 6yr old newly diagnosed T1. She is about to enter honeymoon - today she needed 0 humalog and just 1 unit of basal in the morning. What I observed is right after a meal she spikes up into 250-300 range. If she is not active (like in virtual school) it slowly goes down to 120-150 over...

    How much insulin?

Thank you so much! For the life of me I could not find a clear answer to this question. Thanks for your insight!
