Can people let me know how they get on with barley. I've seen a few chefs use it in risotto which seems a good idea. Also read that it has best GI of grains. What effect does it have on bg? And is it good. Sent from the Diabetes Forum App

    OMG Hb1c Result

Re: OMG Hb1c Result Thanks for the support. I get mad on a daily basis on here listening to people who get bad advice. Best advice i took from a book was "diabetes is an intolerance to carbohydrates". Once you work out how much your body can cope with its easy going. And the idea that we need...

    OMG Hb1c Result

Had my latest test results today. HbA 1c is 5. When i was diagnosed in February this year it was 9.8 Fasting blood glucose was also in the non diabetes range. I was completely amazed as i didn't think it would be this good. So GP happy and i shall not be taking any medication. I've been on a...

    Low Carb Success

Vonbon, the book i mentioned above says that constipation and headaches are down to lack of salt. A low carb diet tends to increase fluid loss and therefore salt loss. They recommend 5g salt a day. Sent from the Diabetes Forum App

    Low Carb Success

Firstly great news lesley ann on your progress. Secondly i can heartily recommend the following book The Art and Science of Low Carb Living by volek and phinney. It gives the science behind LCHF diets. From memory it says that there will initially be an increase in cholesterol but that it's not...

Help! I don't want to medicate.

Stuff, i really recommend the following book The Art and Science of Low Carb Living by volek and phinney. It gives you the science behind how to do low carb eg less than 50g a day. It all makes sense. They show how you will eventually have more energy and be able to do more exercise. It's not...

    newly diagnosed

Hi jayne, i was diagnosed in Feb and felt very similar to you. On my first day it took me an hour to choose my lunch i was totally paralyzed! But it gets better. If you can get a blood glucose meter it's really helpful. That way you can see how food affects you. I've chosen to cut out carbs...

    Safe cholesterol level?

Ian, whilst i don't want to be rude all the info people have given to you is rubbish. Go read the work of Dr Malcolm kendrick and Dr briffa. Both have web sites and books. Both give compelling scientific evidence that these artificially chosen levels of good cholesterol mean nothing. Both also...

    Good GP

Hi all. Since i recently moved house i had my first visit to my new GP. And he seems to be supportive. I showed him my blood testing results for the past 6 weeks and he was happy. From a 9.2 on diagnosis i am now getting regular readings between 4 and 7. When he asked how i had managed this and...

    UK GI table or sheet?

Jis I would echo Paul's comments. From my readings since being diagnosed in Feb i would say the spikes do matter. Trying to keep things within range on a day to day basis is good. I count the carbs and can have about 35g before i start to go too high. I've cut out most carbs and just get them...

    Having a bad day!

Thanks for the thoughts everybody. I guess there are going to be good days and bad days. Viv i do find Dr Bernstein a bit harsh. But what he says seems to make sense to me. Has anyone read Dr Neil Barnard reversing diabetes - seems to follow a vegetarian and fruit diet.

    Long Term drug use

Thanks for all the thoughts. I dont have an issue with Metformin as it is. I think i read somewhere its made from the french lily plant so is natural. But i would prefer to manage my levels with food rather than drugs. Guess im going to see how i get on over the next few months and make a decision
