    Confused by hospital advice

For breakfast, she'll have two slices of wholewheat toast and spread and a cup of tea with just milk. Lunch is normally soup or a sandwich - which would have cold meat, possibly salad and spread and a cup of tea Dinner is usually white meat of some kind and vegetables. She very rarely eats...

    Confused by hospital advice

I joined this board for my grandmother, who was diagnosed as type 2 almost 3 years ago. She started off on diet control which didn't have much effect, so was put on Metformin. Unfortunately, this upset her ulcerative colitis, so she was changed to Gliclazide - initially 80mg in the morning...

    Neuropathy - again

Her eyes were checked in May last year. She's had cataract surgery to both eyes and just after the surgery, she was amazed at how well she was seeing. However, her sight has dimmed terribly. One doctor says that it's probably hazing over the capsule where the implant was put and she needs...

    Neuropathy - again

Thank you. I did wonder if the pain was due to another cause, but like that, she has diabetes and the doctor just honed in on that and said that it must be neuropathy. She does have arthritis in her spine, so it'll be a trip off to the doctor again to try and get him to take a more objective...

    Neuropathy - again

Hi all, It seems I only post when there's a problem and for that I apologise. I'm doing this on behalf of my gran - she's type 2 diabetic. She's asked me to post again about her neuropathy - at least we think that's what it is. She is in excrutiating pain in her left hip and down her leg...

    Neuropathy

Thanks everyone. I've got her taking Alpha Lipoic Acid at the moment. I've not ordered the Benfotiamine yet and she says to give it another week to see how she goes with the ALA. She's only a little bit overweight but her blood sugars aren't always very good - the doctor says that he'd rather...

    Benfotiamine and Alpha Lipoic Acid

How long have you been taking it for? My gran only started taking it on Friday and so far, she's felt quite sick and has said that she's got terrible pins and needles in her arm - don't know if it's the ALA or just coincidence.

    Benfotiamine and Alpha Lipoic Acid

That's brilliant thank you. Wasn't too sure if they could be combined or not. I got a "standard" dose from the health shop of the ALA (200mg) and the Benfotiamine seems to come in 2 dose of 80mg or 150mg and it looks like the 80mg is take two a day, so I'll get the 150mg and get her to take...

    Benfotiamine and Alpha Lipoic Acid

I just wanted to check if it's OK to take these two supplements together? I got my gran some ALA today (she hasn't started it yet) and thought I'd check before I order the Benf. What doses are normal? The ALA is 200mg one capsule per day and I've noticed that the Benfotiamine comes in several...

    Neuropathy

That's what I thought, but they only seem to be interested in her HbA1c. Can I ask where you get the Benfotiamine and what dose you take? She goes to the hospital diabetes clinic once a year and is meant to see the diabetic nurse at the GPs surgery every 3 or 6 months (I can't actually...

    Neuropathy

Benfotiamine - that's the stuff!!! Thank you. It's been driving me mad trying to remember it. She was started on a very low dose Gabapentin and it didn't do anything, so the doc increased it and she was in a right old state with it - she just didn't like the feeliings she was getting with it...

    Neuropathy

Hi everyone, I hope you are all well. A while ago, I read a link to an article on treatments of peripheral neuropathy. It involved supplements, one of the B vitamins I believe and a couple of other things, but for the life of me, I can't find the link. Can anyone help point me in the right...

    Neuropathy

Thanks. How long after you stopped taking the statins did you notice any improvement?

Excellent link, thank you. I'll get her to the doctor and discuss this with him, along with her other problems.

Her doctor's a bit on the limp side. Most of the time, he doesn't seem to know what he's doing, then every now and again, he astounds us with some gem of knowledge that actually makes us think that sometimes he does know what he's doing!! I'll be gentle with him though!! :P

    Neuropathy

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to cut her Simvastatin out as a starting point to see how it goes. I'm not even sure that she needs the Simvastatin - the doctor put her on it because he said diabetics can have problems with high cholesterol! When her cholesterol was checked, her...

    Neuropathy

Sorry, cross posts! Yeah, I know they're the same thing - the difference is the Diamicron is a slow release formula that she only takes once a day, as opposed to the two doses she used to take of the plain old Gliclazide. I don't know if it makes any difference...........

    Neuropathy

Yeah, I've just got the patient information leaflet out. I know that Diamicron is only a slow release version of Gliclazide (which she was on before) but I don't think we have the same control over her blood sugars as we did when she was on the plain Gliclazide. I have been a bit lax in...

    Neuropathy

Hi and thank you for the quick responses. Yes, she is on Simvastatin and I did read the leaflet that it could cause leg pain and she has had pains in her legs for ages, but in the last few months, they've got a lot worse. Can it do that? Make the pain get worse and worse the longer you take...

    Neuropathy

Hi all, I registered a while ago and can't remember if I introduced myself!! My name is Alison and I registered for my gran, who is 84 and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes just over a year ago - although I suspect she had been suffering from it for a long time before that. I had a...
