    It’s my D-Day!

Today is my 41st anniversary of being diagnosed Type 1 diabetic. I was 3 years and 4 months old when it happened. I’m doing alright as it goes. Control is good, always has been. I grew up to be a big fella (6’5” and just under 20 stone, but not fat), and I don’t have any complications so far...

    PLEASE DON'T DO THIS!!

I have no idea. There was something else similar where Boots were offering all kinds of stuff for new Mums on the NHS (like baby wipes and calpol and the like) - I have two kids, and we paid for all of that because it's just taking a lend of something which shouldn't be abused! Abuse it and...

    PLEASE DON'T DO THIS!!

I just saw this in the IDDT Magazine. We all get insulin, needles etc on the NHS. Given the fact we all pay tax, that's fair enough. Please DO NOT claim for things that you can sort out with food. An alternative to basically taking advantage of the NHS in this manner is buying jelly babies or...

    T1 CURE...????? really

[was a response - a positive one! - to a deleted post - made no sense once the original was deleted] :)

    T1 CURE...????? really

The best get out for someone who is blind to realism. Sure. Let's leave it there. But please - don't call me a pessimist again. Thanks.

    T1 CURE...????? really

If you read back through the thread, I'd already bowed out due to my disagreement with the 'hopers'. You obviously don't understand what pessimism is, though, as if you did, you'd realise I'm not. :)

    T1 CURE...????? really

'Pessimism' and 'resent'. Neither of those words apply to me or anything I've said. I'd embrace a cure. I don't 'hope' for one, but I wouldn't turn it down. I'm just realistic in my expectations. There's nothing pessimistic or resentful about my attitude at all. In fact, 'hoping' for a...

    T1 CURE...????? really

'Hope' would suggest a sadness in the fact that I'm diabetic. Genuinely, I don't care. I don't let it affect my life any more than I let shaving my head affect my life. Any 'sadness' I feel is accompanied by frustration at the people who DO 'hope' for a cure. If there was a 'eureka'...

    Type 1: Prescription fine

Censorship strikes again. Impolite word was fully justified, I'm afraid.

    Type 1: Prescription fine

The people who are to blame is not the GP, nor the chemist. It's the NHS. I'm a BIG defender of the NHS - I think we're really lucky to have it - but there's no point in making people re-apply for prescription exemption where the only way they won't be Type 1 Diabetic anymore is if they DIE...

    Type 1: Prescription fine

Bonkers, this, isn't it? I mean, my Mum and Dad are both > 60 - they don't need a certificate to prove that, and let's face it, they have as much chance of ever being under 60 again as I do not being Type 1 Diabetic... By very nature of the fact you have been prescribed insulin you should be...

    T1 CURE...????? really

You're right of course, but just the same as anything else, everyone's argument/opinion has its own parameters. My angle is 'they won't find a cure in my lifetime or my son's' - basically, all the time that will ever matter to me. 'Forever' in the true sense means nothing at all, as very few...

    T1 CURE...????? really

That's not really true. I actually find the 'not hoping for a cure as it'll never happen' stance a very liberating outlook. I waste zero brain time (well aside from discussing it on diabetes forums, obv!) thinking about it. I don't see blockers, as I don't care about a cure. :)

Nice analogy. :) probably adding fuel to the fire here, but I'm an atheist too. :)

    T1 CURE...????? really

I quite literally read everything I can about diabetes. Not for hope, but for education, as that's what I believe in. I have a strong understanding of biology and a 'background' (as such) in medicine, so I understand what I read too. You're absolutely right about gene therapies. The problem is...
