We may be the lucky ones

So right - at least we know and can take insulin and/or eat sensibly to deal with our affliction, for many illnesses there is no remedy.

doctor suggests i come off insulin after 26 yrs and well controlled

Just a little side remark, doccydoo, to '...diabetes nurse, not even a specialist'. Over all the 53 years I have been going to specialist diabetes clinics I have found diabetes nurses extremely helpful and knowledgeable, and they usually have more time for you than the consultants.

    Type 1 and Frozen Shoulders

Had 2 'bad' shoulders for 20 years or more, never thought it could be due to my diabetes T1! This forum is a revelation! Have not been able to undo /do up my bras at the back all this time, so need to deal with the very unsexy doing it up in front and turning it...as to tight jackets, well...so...

Poll: Which diabetes course(s) have you attended?

Have been on a 5-day DAFNE course many years ago, and on yearly follow-up courses. It changed my life, I really can and do eat normally and the knowledge about carbs and the corresponding insulin dose has been very liberating and I feel I'm in control of my diabetes. Yes, I would recommend this...

    Freestyle libre in Thailand!

Actually, poppyblackcat, I have no idea what a freestyle libre sensor is. Perhaps testing equipment?? If it's a pump, of course my above advice is nonsensical...

    Freestyle libre in Thailand!

I live on Bali several months every year and therefore travel long-haul regularly. Never had any problems. Through security I just put all my equipment in plastic bags in a tray. The humidity of the tropical climate has no effect on anything I need, in my experience. You'll love Thailand! Enjoy...

App to record food intake and BG

I use the app DAFNE online. Take a look at it, even if you're not on DAFNE it would be great.

Has anyone here been a diabetic for more than 40 years?

@ Ruth. Yes, true, I did get a beautiful gold medal in a very smart blue case. It made me smile :-)). I actually thought it came from my clinic, as they always told me how well I was doing...

I am actually an idiot - urgent help needed!

@ Heathenlass, love your idea, maybe you could patdnt such a pen. Seriously though, it just goes to show how cardful pne has to be and how concentrated on what one does. Have found myself speaking to someone whilst injecting, then having to check if I'd done ghe right thng. NOT GOOD.

    This might be difficult!

Anyone married to a diabetic person deserves a medal! From my experience, they worry more than I ever do about myself. My partner constantly carries glucose and jelly beans around in case I forget, and asks me EVERY night before sleep: Have you tested? Everything ok? YYEEEEES I yell, good night...

    hba1c results

Yes, we know much more, and I have often encountered nurses and doctors who know and say so. They're not normally silly or conceited :-)

Has anyone here been a diabetic for more than 40 years?

Had T1 since sge 10 and am now 64 and feeling very well and healthy. I feel I'm very lucky. I keep an eye on what I eat, am on DAFNE, inject accordingly, usually 5 times a day and keep my weight down. My GB varies, but as long as I know why it's too high or too low, that's ok and I can take...

Can insulin needs DROP during honeymoon period?

Haha, there I thought you were actually on honeymoon and making love several times a day - was just going to be clever and tell you about physical activity lowering BG. Silly me :-))

Does this happen to all Type 1's...?

I never discuss my diabetes (after 53 successful years of avoiding to do so). Except, of course, with family, friends and people who need to know at work, in case...

    Hypos and brain function

We know that our brain goes off the rails during a hypo, thinking straight becomes a problem. My question: How do serious hypos affect our brains long-term. Can they cause memory loss and early dementia? After over 50 years of T1 with some serious hypos and many not so dangerous ones, I would...

Funniest thing you've done while having a hypo...

Having had diabetes 1 for over 50 years, since age 10, I have experienced a great number of hypos. Twice I've been very lucky to return to normal life. Some hypos have been funny, in retrospect (such as me talking to the flowers in my window box and moving the box inside my bed so the flowers...
