No benefit of self-testing for type 2

I have to say that I've never ever been put under any pressure not to use test strips. Indeed, my GP encourages me to keep testing. I was diagnosed as type 2 almost three years ago, and I had trouble getting my hba1c down at first. However, after going through what I imagine most of us have gone...

    Marathon running

Exactly. Most weeks I run a fun 5k race (see www.parkrun.com). It has some very fast runners in it most weeks, some intermediate ones like me, and some people who are happy just to get round. The last lot are the ones I admire most. The event is great, it's free, gets people out of bed on a...

    Marathon running

Maybe it's just cos I'm English and we tend not to take such great store of winning, but surely it depends on your pre-race ambitions. Third place is pretty good in my opinion in any event. And, blah blah, it's the taking part that counts, blah blah.

Sugar levels after early morning run.

This is new to me: a run that causes blood sugar levels to rise! I've never encountered this before in my two years of running since being diagnosed. Is this common? I have so much to learn. I run a fair bit, though never before breakfast, and always find my blood sugars are lower after running...

    Marathon running

I'm thinking or entering a marathon next year and wonder if anyone has any tips. I do a lot of running, but over much shorter distances, and I'm very careful about checking my blood sugar levels and ensuring I have enough emergency carbs. But a marathon is on a whole new level - that is, I did...

    Annoyed with myself

I know nothing of pumps. I don't need to inject huge amounts. I'm sure other people would know better.

    Annoyed with myself

it's actually very easy. The doctor gave me a needle with no insulin and told me to take my time and put it into my stomach area. Pushed it in, no pain at all. It's much easier, actually, than pricking your fingers.

    Annoyed with myself

No offence, but it is quite funny that someone into 'deviant art' has found it so hard to prick their finger! Just made me smile. If you're still having trouble, just imagine you're spiking your own worst enemy! I must admit, I found injecting hard at first, but the needles they give us are so...

    Injecting in Public

If all of us were to rip our tops off, jump up on the table and shout 'look at this everyone', it would still be acceptable. Well, maybe not, but the poster who said it was the other guy's problem is spot on: I think there's the same debate about breast feeding - it's perfectly natural and...

Self Monitoring of Blood Glucose and Type 2s

Seems to me there's a degree of postcode lottery going on here: I'm lucky; someone else isn't. It's all wrong. I'm not sure how we're supposed to know if we're controlling our diabetes without testing our blood glucose levels on a daily basis. Am I wrong?

Self Monitoring of Blood Glucose and Type 2s

As I get them as a matter of course, I naively assumed every diabetic could get them if they wanted them.

Self Monitoring of Blood Glucose and Type 2s

Is this serious? I had no idea diabetics were being forced into buying test strips on ebay. That's outrageous.

Self Monitoring of Blood Glucose and Type 2s

I'm amazed that people are being told to test once or twice a week. Just on an intuitive level, one has to wonder how on earth that could help anyone. Knowing what I now know about the capricious nature of blood sugar levels, I think it's vital for many if not all diabetics to check their blood...

    Common Sense.

Polly Toynbee accurately described political correctness as 'an empty rightwing smear designed only to elevate its user'. And as Will Hutton, again correctly, said, it's an invention of the right in the US to use as a weapon against liberals. Of course, organisations, governments and communities...

    FROM VEGGIE TO FISH EATING

As a vegetarian, I have to say the only question is whether you have been a vegetarian on the grounds of not wanting to eat living creatures. That's the reason I'm a vegetarian, and it means not eating fish. Don't get me wrong - I don't judge others on this: it's a choice I've made for myself...

    Attitudes.

I've been diagnosed for less than two years, and I don't fit the stereotype either: I'm a vegetarian, I'm thin, I don't smoke, I get loads of exercise... And, yes, I've noticed the odd thing in the paper (usually the Daily Mail, but other papers that should know better get in on the act) that...

Confused what to do when this happens?

I think the thing everyone has to remember is that we're diabetic - that means our body doesn't naturally control our blood sugar levels well. Which means that we're going to go below and above 'normal' BS levels at times, sometimes for obvious reasons, sometimes not. Obviously, the ideal way to...
