Thought I'd pass this on,

TODAY WE MOURN THE PASSING OF A BELOVED FRIEND,COMMON SENSE, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was as his birth records were lost long ago in beaureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered for having cultivated such valuable lessons as when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair and maybe it was my fault.

Common sense lived by simple, sound financial policies, (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting, (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were put in place.

Reports of a 6yr old boy charged with harassment for kissing a classmate. teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the very job they themselves failed to do in discipling their unruly children

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or a sticky plaster to a student but could not inform the parents if they knew that a student was pregnant.

Common sense lost the will to live as the 10 commandments became contraband, churches became businesses and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Commonsense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Commonsense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion, his daughter, Responsibility and his son, Reason. He is survived by 3 step-brothers, I Know My Rights, Someone Else Is To Blame and I'm A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized that he was gone. If you still remember him then please pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

Catherine.

Catherine - It's sad, because it's so true. One of the reasons why we decided to live in Luxembourg after retirement.

You forgot his step-sister,Catherine, Poli-tical correctness.Another reason why common sense gave up the will to live.

Political correctness was not the invention of the "do-gooders" but the invention of those who want a divide between "indigenous Brits" and the "minorities", it's the only legal way to achieve it.

Fair enough comment Eric, but when things like blackboard and Baa baa black sheep get changed because of the word black it began to get a little silly!

Whatever else you do as a visiting nurse, don't offer to pray for your patient.

Don't teach your children about Jesus in case they chat about him to their class-mates.

And understand that its better for for the children of an addict mother to be adopted by a homosexual couple than cared for by their grandparents, who will then never see them again.

So what do we call a "black car" or a "black cat" than?

But funny enough on the news they always say the "black community", "Muslim community", "Asian community" etc.

It's getting so confusing and stupid that one has to be really carefull, and scared, of one what says in order not to cause some sort of trouble.

What got me most was that a works canteen had to bann the sale of ham and pig products because it offended some minority groups working there.

Then there was the bann on wearing of the cross and all sorts of other stupidities.

But others are allowed to wear what is considered as "religious symbols/clothing".

This only leads to "why them and not us" resentment and hate.

This is something that really does get right up my ..... and very upset everytime I read another "Political correctnes" stupidity and I kinda loose it, so I think I'd better stop before I offend somebody.

BTW, I am not an "Indeginous Brit", I am one of the "minorities", not "black", not "white", not "Asian" but described as "other" in all forums I have to fill in.

I believe both of these were the invention of the Right-wing press to get at the Left-wing administrations in charge of Liverpool and London.

However I would l;ike to know that if the N word (used to mean people of colour) is so offensive, why is it ok for coloured people to use it.

If a word is acceptable for part of the population to use, it should be acceptable for all of the population to use

How do I do a presentation on Paul Robeson without mentioning Negro Spirituals? Its the word he used.

Hi All

I agree totally with all the comments regarding PC it is so out of control that the art of conversation will soon be lost for fear of upsetting someone.

In work, when we fill in the the ethnic groups, i refuse to fill in white british, why should we have to define our colour when for eg the chinese dont

And when i was in uni, you couldn't say a sentence without adding, i didn't offend anyone did i, its so pathetic. I can recall on one occasion a student she was about 45 ish, asked one of the lecturers a question about psychiatrists, all she wanted to know was why was the majority pakistani (although she used the shortened version)

She wasn't bein racist in anyway but was making an observation and askin the question, she was thrown out of the class and was made to appoligise to everyone incase it upset them.

Now this is takin PC to far as i woudln't go to a cafe to order a coffee without milk i would order a black coffee

Surely you should use commen sense and ur own judgement

Black is a colour! Why should it not be used to describe things(I'm not talking about people) that are black.I do not not use the word yellow or red for fear of offending a person of colour so why is the word black so stigmatised?
If you are asked to describe someone to the police how do you describe them without using a word to describe their skin tone?
I can understand taking some of the very derogatory words out of our language but removing colours from our world that is just mad!

Exactly, Sue!

My wife happens to be as black as the night sky but doesn't take exception to the word. In fact, she's become immune to real racist insults over the years, and regards those who use them as unintelligent and/or uneducated. She's usually correct.

This thread is not progressing as I thought it would. Seems to have well and truly come off track.

OK, Catherine, here's an example of lack of common sense. Locally, nobody would deny that we have a problem with traffic congestion during the rush hour. The authorities decided, in their wisdom, to create "Quality Bus Lanes", essentially barring motorists from half of the roads they pay to use and repair. The result? The same number of motorists stuck in one lane watching empty buses sail past them into the city centre.

Following this stroke of pure genius, Manchester council proposed a congestion charge, promoted by a multi-million pound advertising campaign and a HUGELY expensive referendum. Result? Soundly defeated with nearly 80% of residents voting against it.

Ye Gods! Surely somebody knew that this was a non-starter?

Thanks for that Thirsty.
This common sense is not very common is it? :)
Catherine.

You would think it would be common sense to give test strips to type 2's to save money in the future re complications but that is never going to happen either.

Polly Toynbee accurately described political correctness as 'an empty rightwing smear designed only to elevate its user'. And as Will Hutton, again correctly, said, it's an invention of the right in the US to use as a weapon against liberals. Of course, organisations, governments and communities of whatever political complexion or cultural nature will often do and say silly things that appear to go against someone or other's 'common sense'. That doesn't necessarily mean that the general world view that led to it happening is wrong - it may just have been carried out in a wrong-headed way, which of course is a very human thing. If I might turn to the 'N' word, which has been mentioned. Someone asks why it's wrong for a white person to use it, but ok for a black person to do so. The first thing I would say is that I think it unlikely that most black people consider it an ok word to use. And given the context - hundreds of years of slavery and other forms of oppression - the use of it by a white person carries very heavy historical meanings. So why is it a lesser offence for a black person to use it? Though I think the world would be a better place if no one used it, there is such a thing as recuperation - where people from minorities take a word used by oppressors and lessen its force by using it about themselves. It's why some lesbians are happy to call themselves dykes, though that is also a pretty horrible word to use. The truth is, and a lot of you won't like this, there has always been and will always be a degree of moral relativism in the world, because the power of some things to offend really does depend on the context.
