Carbs and Rice - cooked or uncooked weight?

Hi @DaveH2 A similar question was asked some years ago on this forum https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/carb-difference-between-cooked-and-uncooked-rice.30449/ It would seem that boiled rice will loose carbs in the cooking process as starch is washed away, whereas steamed or microwaved...

    My first 3-month Diabetes Review

Congratulations @Sheila L. You are going in the right direction and should keep on doing what you have been doing and that includes eating porridge.

My First Diabetes Review, 31 July 2019

Hello @Sheila L you should really be supported on this forum in your actions to deal with your diabetes diagnosis, rather than be given "advice" to do something different, no matter how well meant that advice might be. It is refreshing to read something on this forum which is positive with...

Daily carbs recommended by dietitian at Low carb workshop

I found the following on the Diabetes Australia website under the heading "Position statement on low carb eating for people with diabetes." It is quite clear that DA knows what is and what is not low carb and in that regard 245g could not be classed as "low carb". I suspect that the OP has got...

    Newly diagnosed, scared and confused

White bread is over-processed, high in calories and of little nutritional value, whereas whole grain bread is high in fibre, vitamin B and other nutrients. Also white bread will leave you feeling hungry whereas whole grain bread will not.

    Recently Diagnosed

I don't know why but @daisy1 keeps referring to the old NICE guidelines about self testing. The new guidelines currently in force from 2015 provide that GPs : Do not routinely offer self-monitoring of blood glucose levels for adults with type 2 diabetes unless the person is on insulin or...

    which reading is correct ?

If neither of the post-prandial readings is correct, then how can one assume that the single pre-prandial reading of 5.7 is correct?

Apples on a low carb diet

Raw apples have fibre which lowers the glycemic load which prevents the blood level from spiking. Stewed apples have the same amount of sugar as raw apples but very little of the fibre, so a blood spike is likely. Raw apples are good for diabetics and non-diabetics, IMHO, so eat them raw...

    Self testing readings. Recently diagnosed.

Hi Alfie, I tested whilst losing weight but have not bothered since my Hba1C stabilised in the low 30s about three years ago. If you keep you weight off your blood sugar level should take care of itself. The NHS/NICE guidelines recommend that those who are on insulin medication or at risk of...

    What's Right

I agree with that. One has only got to take three readings at the same time with the same meter to get three different test results, yet some people are making decisions on what to eat and what not to eat on the basis one pre-prandial test and one post-prandial test.

Nice Guidelines And Self-testing Glucose Meters

Thank you @Guzzler and @Alison Campbell I would not presume to give anyone advice as to whether they should or should not test and therefore would be reluctant to draft any such advice on which others might comment. I do feel that if NICE guidelines are going to be referred to, then those...

Nice Guidelines And Self-testing Glucose Meters

I was diagnosed as T2 back in 2013. I recall then looking around and noticing the NICE guidelines then current which had first been published in 2008. I was vaguely aware that these guidelines had been updated in December 2015 with a small revision last year. The guidelines now, so far as they...

Prof Roy Taylor's work on reversing type 2 diabetes

I would hazard a guess that if the overworked doctor and nurse were aware that you had lost weight to the extent that your BMI went from 31 to 21(as indicated in your signature), then they would draw the conclusion that your normal blood glucose was due to that. In other words, you are glucose...

Prof Roy Taylor's work on reversing type 2 diabetes

So to summarise, lose weight and then keep that weight off by following the NHS Eatwell Plate guidelines to give a statistically significant prospect of 'reversing' diabetes, would seem to be the gist of the results of Professor Taylor's researches. It is hardly earth-shattering news.

Looking at the product information of the Cambridge Diet Plan shakes, it seems that each shake has 145 KCals and 14.5g of carbs, so your carbohydrate intake is going to be in the order of 80g or so.

If you're going to be a stickler for accuracy then the protocol published by the team conducting the research states as follows: "A commercial micronutrient-replete 825–853 kcal/d liquid formula diet (soups and shakes) will be provided (Cambridge Weight Plan) to replace usual foods, with ample...

Prof Roy Taylor's work on reversing type 2 diabetes

The shakes which are available on the Cambridge Weight Plan each seem to contain about 2 to 3 grams of fat and 14 to 15 grams of carbohydrates. That is the basis of the "Total Replacement Diet" for the first 12 weeks of the study in which the calorie intake of each individual is restricted to...
