Do you consider yourself to be healthy?

My friend asked me to do a questionnaire as part of her psychology coursework (it was measuring the correlation between exercise and depression) and one of the questions was "do you consider yourself to be in good health?". I instinctively ticked the yes option because that's what I genuinely...

    Plane travel

I think it's better to have a letter just in case. It also depends on where you're flying to. I've found that flying out from the UK is fine (I did get stopped at security but that was because I had scissors in my bag...) but some airports on the way back may be more problematic if they...

How do you feel when high?

I feel absolutely fine when I'm actually high, but my hypo symptoms are the 'typical' high BG ones - chest pain, tiredness/sleepiness etc...

Type 1's who have maintained their weight- looking for tips and hope

I think the reason why low carb works for weight loss is because foods high in carbohydrates are also normally relatively high in calories. At the end of the day it's a calories game, but you'll automatically be reducing your carb intake if you follow a calorie restricted diet. I was in the...

just had a binge (couldnt help myself)

Believe it or not, I actually forgot I had diabetes while on holiday (clearly I was having too much fun ;)) and I managed to eat/drink a strawberry and nutella waffle, three scoops of ice cream, a large bubble tea, three slices of watermelon, eight chicken nuggets and half of someone's fries...

    Disaster

Yeah it's happened to me a couple of times - I don't know whether it's because they think it doesn't make a difference or whether there's a legitimate reason. I can tell the difference in taste between diet and non diet coke/Pepsi when it's on its own but not when mixed so I used to buy the...

    Rawr.

Haha, no problem! :) I'm studying Biomedical Sciences which has been both painful and useful (I was actually learning about the pancreas when I got admitted to hospital...) I seem to be able to maintain good control on MDIs, but then again I'm honeymooning at the moment so it could just be...

    Rawr.

I'm not exactly new to this forum (although I mostly just lurk) but I thought I'd introduce myself to make the green reminder button thing go away. My RL name is really hard to spell, so you guys can call me Z if you want. I'm 19 (as you may realise by my username), from London, and I'm just...

Type 1s: What stupid things have people said to you?

Friends watching me eat an entire pizza - no reaction Friends watching me eat a single biscuit - OMG ARE YOU SURE YOU CAN EAT THAT???? I know this has been mentioned before, but it's seriously makes me want to facepalm everytime I hear it. And a lot of these friends are medics/biomeds *sigh*

Type 1: What are your HbA1c test results?

6.6% from about a month ago. My next one's going to be double that as I've just come back from a six week holiday...>.>

    Fasting and BG levels

Right, recently I've been skipping a couple of meals unconsciously due to time constraints and I've noticed that if I don't eat for a prolonged period of time (more than ten hours or so), then my BG drops quite significantly and I have actually hypoed from it. I was just wondering if anyone...

    Anything above 7.

Type 1: What are your HbA1c test results?

Advice on drinking alcohol safely with type 1 diabetes??

If you're only going out for a few drinks (i.e. 2~3) then there shouldn't be too much a problem - just be really aware of how you're feeling and have something carby afterwards as the alcohol will make your blood glucose lower several hours after you've first drunk it. I did this anyway before...

    5-2 diet & type 1

I was doing 5-2 until I was diagnosed, but in the book it states that it's not suitable for T1s...Might keep going with it though and see what happens.

How old were you when you first diagnosed with type 1?? And how long do you have it??

I'm 19, got diagnosed less than a month ago. It's still pretty surreal.

Really Annoyed...And more than a little scared.

Could you elaborate on that please? Aren't the two essentially the same?

Really Annoyed...And more than a little scared.

Theoretically yes, but realistically I can't really eat what I want if I don't want my glucose levels to fluctuate wildly. Injecting insulin is so much less effective than the body's own system, making it really hard to time the injections. So if I eat/drink something extremely fast acting...

    Low Carb Diet Question

Apologies if I'm hijacking the thread, but did you guys who low carb have any serious symptoms in the first week or so? I'm keen to give it a try but I'm just worried about the effect on the central nervous system as it takes around 5 days for it to adjust to burning ketones.

    Fed up of food.

I know exactly how you feel, and I haven't even been at this for very long so I imagine that it's probably worse for people who've had to cope with this stupid disease for years. I get really annoyed at the fact that I have to read the nutrition label for absolutely everything, and that I no...
