Have you spoken to your team about changing your regime and going onto a basal/bolus regime which will allow you to be more flexible with your insulin doses ? It does require a good understanding of carbohydrates, as you have to inject for the carbs that pass your lips, but it also allows you to correct for a high bg reading so you can be more proactive in managing your bg levels and flexible with meal times too as you can eat when you want and what you want ?

Based on experience, I was previously on premixed insulin, Mixtard 30 and Actrapid, then Humalog Mix 75/25, then Humalog Mix 50/50, and now I am on Basal/Bolus. I take Lantus before bed and Humalog (not Humalog Mix) before meals. I must say that I feel more free and more flexible with this new insulin, and I must say it takes some time to find the perfect dose regarding both the Basal and Bolus. A lot of members can help you here as it is the most modern (perhaps) insulin system because it closely mimics how our body produces insulin. I do hope this helps. However, Humalog Mix 75/25 is not a bad premix, it is relatively fast and every single unit does count. Anyway, you can't inject at 5.8 but if you fear hypos, eat your usual dinner, check that your sugar is rising about 15 minutes later then inject the usual amount. If this makes you feel safe, go for it, it is better than staying without insulin. I should notice that this is not the best decision to make but it worked for me because I used to have a delayed spike at evenings so my insulin used to spike before my food so I would fall into a hypoglycemia. I hope this helps.
