I took my blood readings at 8am this morning, before breakfast and the reading was 13.00 I had porridge made with skimmed milk and a few raspberries. Out with grandson to walk around the shops looking for cardboard Easter eggs. Lunch in cafe at 1pm toasted ciabatta with a small amount of brie. Chai tea (no milk or sugar).
.Then now at 5pm I have taken my sugar levels and I'm 17.5 I'm still looking into info about the LCHF diet. What did I eat to make my sugars that bad? On Thursday before tea I managed to get my levels down to 8.5

I only have one testing stick left, I ordered more from Amazon 'arriving Saturday (today)..... not!

I've the diabetic nurse in 2 wks time, I really would like to show her that I'm lowering my levels. In a month I've managed to lose just under a stone in weight by not eating biscuits and pickign between meals, plus walking lot.

I did try going back on half dose metformin SR, but stomach cramps returned so came off it again. Feel better in myself.

My husband thinks I shouldn't test my blood that I'm a hypochondriac. I think I'm now at last trying to control my condition. I've been very good and had NO chocolate eggs that were offered in the shops today!

Thanks for 'listening' to me :)

Definitely the ciabatta and possibly the porridge. Bread is one of the worst culprits, that includes wholemeal. A lot of people find porridge also raises levels. It's carbohydrate that turns to glucose in the blood Beryl, not fat. So, maybe a cooked breakfast instead? Some go for eggs, bacon etc, but if you can't face that, try Greek yogurt with some raspberries.

Hope this helps

@berylc Hi if I where to hazard a guess I would think it could be the combination of the porridge and the ciabatta bread both are quite carby though some people can handle them many would avoid either of them.

By the way you are not a hypochondriac you are a diabetic two completely different conditions the only person who can decide to test or not is you. I and lots of people here test every day some several times a day.

Don't be concerned too much with earning the approval of the DN she is not the one with diabetes unless she is a diabetic in which case she is not the diabetic you are concerned with you are. :)

First of all, well done on losing almost a stone. Keep up the good work!

I don't do LCHF but, from what I understand, it looks to me as if you are eating too many carbs.

Porridge can raise blood glucose a lot, and so can bread. I have porridge every morning (a microwave sachet made with milk). Depending on the make of porridge, the carb content could be anything from 24g to over 30g. Obviously, if you make your own porridge (with or without milk) the carb content could be higher or lower. I have read that some people on LCHF limit their daily carbs to 20 - 50g and replace carbs with fat. For instance, they might have berries and cream for breakfast.

Hopefully someone who does LCHF will give you some better advice than I can.

@berylc i think the suggestions about the porridge and bread being the culprits are probably correct. Have you looked at the information on the low carb forum? Try reading the thread , low carb-what have you eaten today. It is full of excellent ideas. I log my food on myfitnesspal website which helps me keep track of my calories and carbohydrates. I saw a brilliant post yesterday by @Brunneria which had an excellent link. I will try and find it for you. :)

Thanks everyone. I don't know if I could face a cooked breakfast every day, but I could face Greek yougurt and rasps :) Just about to take home the 3 grandchildren in my photo, so will call past Tesco and raid the yogurt and fruit dept. Will look up the other suggestions on the computer when I get back home.
Wish my tester strips had arrived, will have to wait until at least Tuesday now because of the Easter weekend.

Must say, this forum is really good, thanks for all your advice.

Hi I used to have the same problem and discovered it was that any whole grain cereals mixed with the milk would spike my BG
Have been on the lchf diet for a few weeks now and have not had a spike like that for a couple of weeks .
Good luck

Hi. My partner had trouble with high blood sugar but we have cut out most carbohydrates and it has come down a lot. Bread sends it shooting up, though he sometimes has one slice of Burgen Soya and Linseed bread with some scrambled eggs for breakfast. We eat a lot of egg-based breakfast as protein in the morning fills you up. Do make porridge sometimes, but with water. Dinners are meat/fish with vegetables, though we have some vegetarian stuff like cauliflower cheese and stuffed aubergines. Have made turkey curry tonight and will do cauliflower rice with it. Even my partner, who could eat a whole load of crusty bread in the past, admits that this low carb thing seems to work. Give it a go.

I've just looked at the dietdoctor and it has given me lots of good advice. I've been to Tesco and bought greek yogurt, cream and raspberries (Can I eat any berry? Strawberry, blueberry. Can't think of another berry at this late hour!). Breakfast tomorrow will be a poached egg with butter dip, yogurt and rasps. Lunch is roast beef and veg (no tatties). No yorkshire puddings!
I'll keep my last testing strip for a couple of days!
The diet doc recommends 8 hrs sleep a night, so I guess I had better get off here and go to bed!

Sounds like a great plan Beryl - sleep well!:)

Yes most berrys are fine just be carefull on the strawberries as high in sugar
I regularly have mixed berrys with greek yochurt for breakfast and at times throw in a chopped banana and mixed nuts just to add a bit of variety to it one of favourites is to add a springle of pumpkin and sunflower seeds

Sounds like you are on the right course @berylc remember the portions of berrys shouldn't be huge - I generally count 8 raspberries (sad but true).

Ignore your husband's comments if you can - testing is how you are going to learn.

Also, if you like cheese consider a more German style breakfast ie cheese and ham. I often have Brie and ham for breakfast - it works well when I really can't be bothered to do eggs etc.

Good luck - your weight loss sounds great so that must be making you feel better

Well done on the weight loss and the activity.

You need to test as that gives you knowledge and knowledge is power so in a nice way ignore your husband you are the one with diabetes not him.

The Diet Doctor does a two week low carb challenge which is free and is a wonderful introduction into eating low carb as you are told what to eat to keep your carbs below 20 a day. There are some lovely receipes on the programme as well.

Other breakfast options are scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, smoked salmon and cream cheese, if I am in a hurry I often have someting like serano ham and some cheese. Greek yougurt is good (make sure it it is the 10% fat one) and if you are taking milk in coffee and tea try to use the full fat milk as it has the least amount of sugars in it.

Sometimes for breakfast I will just break out the leftovers from the night before:-)

That's breakfast over, my first day proper of LCHF. Also my first day of NO sugar in my first cup of tea of the day, and I survived it! I can drink tea through the rest of the day, but that 1 small spoon of the white devil tasted good! I had a boiled egg with small amount of butter to melt in it. Then a small bowl of Greek yogurt with 6 raspberries.
Is mozzarella cheese ok to eat? I thought I'd make a salad for lunch with it and a small amount of either smoked salmon (thanks Tesco home delivery for not having 100g in stock and delivering 200g at the lower price!) or Serrano ham.
Tea is roast beef at daughter's house, no tatties but plenty of veg!

all sounds good. Yes Mozzerella is fine to eat. It will not be long before tea with sugar in it tastes disgusting. I went from 6 sugars to none in my 20s and after the first cup it was easy. Just stick it out.

Beryl, I can eat small portions of spuds, pasta and rice, I discovered this by testing. But when initially diagnosed, I cut the lot out for a couple months, to get my blood sugars down. I'm officially in the non diabetic range, have been for four years but recently have put on over a stone, let snacking back into my life - and numbers were beginning to rise (within "official" figures, but too high for me!),
Since last week, I'm low carbing again, pasta etc out. Weight is coming down, and energy had risen. Fasting BG this morning was 5.1, so lowering again.

You will find your own pattern, but cutting out those carbs will get your levels down, and you will feel so much better. It's all good!

Hello @berylc you've made a brilliant start! Well done. Yes berries are fine. Bananas are very high in sugar. I'm sure I've read a list showing sugar content of different fruits. I'll try and find it for you. A general rule that some of us use is a food with anything up to 5 g of carbs in 100 grams is fine. Anything over you need to weigh up whether it's worth it. :)

Just arrived at daughter's house to find she's making some kind of Swedish potatoes, they look lovely, but I will pass. Roast venison (thought it was to be beef!) and lots of veg. Will I have to pass on the gravy made with stock, port and butter?
