Am i right to test 2 hours hours after eating a meal and if the reading is 3mol over your pre meal reading to Have a correction dose ,Or just see how it goes for a few days and adjust ratios ?

Erm no. I wouldn't do that. My nurse said to not test 2 hours after meals unless you're checking a spike.

Normal quick acting insulin stays active for 4-5 hours. If you start doing corrections 2 hours after eating you're in real danger of stacking.

I check before meals and if I'm a touch high I then correct. If it happens consistently I then review my ratios

Ideally, 2 hrs after meal, you should be back near pre-meal levels. However, in reality, this doesn't always happen. As Hale quite rightly advised, I wouldn't do any correction doses as there is still insulin working in your system. What you can do however, is note the meal, carb content and units of insulin taken. Keep this data an look for trends. It may be a one-off reading or it may be that your insulin/carb ration may need adjusting. Also, certain foods will give different readings regardless of carb content depending on the GI value of the food. Simple carbs break down much easier in the body than complex carbs so your BG levels will rise sharply, quickly. Lower GI foods will give a lower reading but will last longer.
I know it sounds complicated but bottom line is keep records and don't stack insulin. Good luck

Thanks for the advice, not sure wen to inject I worry about also injecting after carbs like pasta .i tested my daughters blood before eating they were 6 and wen I checked after eating to give her insulin it was 19 ! I'm not sure how injecting after things like pizza and pasta helps I'd like to understand the reasons I do things not just do them.are they such things as bad carbs that I should avoid ?

Why do you inject after? I always inject before, often up to 15 minutes before. Unless there is a lot if fat in the meal and then I do during.

Pasta especially I would get the injection in before I sit down.

I don't inject it's my 9 year old who had diabetes ,i inject her after with pasta and pizza as the diabetic nurse told us to ,that's why I wanted to understand the reasoning behind it as I just can't get my head round it .

Better to inject prior to eating things like pasta. They are high in GI so the insulin needs a head start to prevent a spike. As Hale says, 10-15mins prior to eating.

Hmmm well I have some theories, but I could be way off!

Pizza has cheese on it so its high in fat. So I would inject during. But even brown pasta is still relatively high GI. But if she has say macaroni cheese, she could hypo earlier on because of the fat content of the milk and cheese lowering the total GI of the meal, so inject afterwards once it's started to digest. But if it was Bolognaise, or something along those lines I inject 15 minutes before, usually at the same time I set the pasta to boil!

Other theory - my cousin is also T1. As a child she always injected after she ate because my aunt couldn't be sure how much she would eat. Maybe this is why the nurse suggested it?

You could try splitting..... Not sure a 9 year old would agree to 2 injections though! 1/2 before and 1/2 after would eliminate a spike and hopefully avoid any hypo, depending on the meal.

I hope that makes sense! I've only been diagnosed for 5 months so I'm still learning too!

Thank you so much yes that all helps a lot ,is there any books anyone can recommend for learning about the GI ?of foods and how they effect diabetes x

I like pizza but pizza doesn't like me so I tend not to eat the stuff unless I have no option but to.

Have you tried making your own pizza base and using an alternative topping to cheese like beef mince with tomatoe?

Regarding the GI of food, Noblehead has posted links for this .

I use a book called think like a pancreas - it is great for everything diabetes related. Explains how to relate GI to your insulin dose, exercise, insulin corrections etc
