The puzzle that is Asperger syndrome that I still can't fit together.
I visited the community Diabetes centre, which is on the grounds of,but not part of the hospital,on Thursday for my appointment with the Endocinologist.
We discussed everything that had been going on and he himself suspects I have LADA and not type 2 but will have to wait for the results of the C-pep and GAD Antibody tests to really confirm...That's ONE step forward.

Secondly he has prescribed me an Injectable medication called Byetta which I would need to inject twice a day BUT in his patients he has had good results. He says they will monitor me on it and if it's not enough he will prescrible a little insulin as well in conjunction with it.great....That's another step forward.

The step back is.....Although he has wrote and given me the prescription for Byetta and I have collected it from the Hospital Pharmacy and the pack of pens are now in my fridge.....I CAN'T USE THEM YET!!! :x

The reason being, there is a backlog of patients who are to be started on Byetta and the nurses are working through the backlog as quick as possible,to have the patients in to be trained how to use the Byetta pens and learn the do's and don'ts of the drug and although the Endo hopes it won't be long,he warned me worse case scenario 2 MONTHS!!!!

I have to admit to being a little dissapointed as 2 months feeling like i do now is not something I relish tbh.

On a positive note...The Endo asked me about my diet and i explained how I am on about 70grams of carbs a day with the carbs I am having being low GI to which he replied "Good Lad!" He also told me to carry on testing and gave me a slip to hand to my surgery requesting I get strips on repeat each month and yesterday the surgery phoned to say my script was ready-50 strips per month with the repeat slip for next month attached!! Looks like there are some more forward thinking HCP's out there! 8)

That seems a long wait to be trained, but I don't know anything at all about injecting.

It is good news about the prescription for the strips and your Endocrinologist does sound to be quite enlightened.

You're on the way to taking control of your diabetes

Thanks Didie!!

I sure hope so!! Me and my wife were quite surprised by the '2 month' statement, just hoping it IS a case of 'Worst case scenario' and he's just covering himself so I don't keep phoning the centre up asking for dates!

Great about the strips Paul especial in light of all the posts on here saying they have such a hard time getting hold of them. However 2 months is just not good I hope you get seen to way before that....

Glad that it was a productive appointment, at least you have a doctor who is prepared to investigate
Lets hope you're right about the worst case scenario.
Meanwhile there is a thread about Byetta, it's so long though I think that it would take you the next 2 months to read it

Thanks everyone who replied!! It is positive news all in all but as Phoenix says I've got a lot of reading to do on Byetta!!! Will keep some paracetemol handy in case I get a headache!!

Good luck Paul. Looks like you're making progress and that you've found some good people who are trying their best. No doubt it will get sorted for you in the end. Take care.

Thanks Xyzzy!! Onwards and upwards as they say!!

That's the spirit. Well done, although not a person who suffers from depression I do know someone who does. To see you looking forward in a positive way is wonderful. I am sure it won't be long and you will be all sorted out, and you can put this tough time in a box and lock it away.

Keep up the good work Paul, you really are doing so well.

Thankyou defren!! Means a lot to me,you and everyone elses support during this challenging phase of my life.

Pleased to hear your appointment went well Paul  and congratulations on the test strips

It certainly has been very challenging, but things are now on the way up. It's great you got strips, again well done. Support is the what this forum is about, and seeing you blossom as you have the last few days or so, shows it works. Keep on keeping on, you'll get there.

Paul

I wrote a post but I must have lost it so here it goes again!

It is great that you came out of the appointment with alot of positive things. Your doctors seems to be a very reasonable man. i hope that mine will be too when i see him

I am on Byetta. It is not bad injecting yourself. In 2009 when I started it was great! I lost 30lbs - mind you - not just because of the Byetta - without knowing i was following a low carb diet. And my hba1c went to 5.8

Unfortunately bad habits returned and I started eating carbs again so the weight and hba1c went up again.

but you have a great start as in you are low carbing and know alot about it....so i am sure you will keep going.

good luck

Thanks clay!!

The Endo I saw works at Leicester where you are now as well as Kettering so we might have the same guy!!

I hope your next appointment goes really well and you can get back to the hba1c you want as I can see how much good Blood sugars mean to you too!

All the best

Paul

{Update} My C-Pep and GAD results are back, tested positive for Antibodies and C-Pep level low.Now re-classed late onset type 1.Relieved yet upset about diagnosis and not sure how I feel about it yet.
Starting Byetta next friday although my consultant feels I will need insulin therapy but we've agreed to try the Byetta for 1 month and review on 22nd may at clinic to see IF it has made a difference or not-otherwise Insulin therapy from then on! I'm not afraid of injecting BUT I am afraid of Hypo's and losing my driving Licence!

At least you have an answer Paul, and can now move on to improved health!

I know I should feel happy and I know things should get better from now on but I kind of feel a bit shocked by it all like I'm a newly diagnosed diabetic all over again.

That's brilliant news Paul.

There is no reason that you shouldn't be able to manage your hypos, your DIabetes will be so much easier to manage now that you're going to get some proper meds.

Thanks Stephen!

I'm still trying to take it all in at the moment but at least I know I'm not going crazy anymore-the If's and But's were driving me mad recently not knowing what or who I was anymore.still,I know there's a wealth of good information about type 1, injecting,Hypo's etc on this forum so I'm going to put my reading glasses on and research all I can.
